The outcome of the call is a verbal agreement on a <strong>30-day suspension of shelling against energy and civilian infrastructure<\/strong> of the belligerent countries, coupled with a commitment to <strong>start negotiations on next steps<\/strong> &#8220;immediately&#8221; and to restore diplomatic and economic relations between Washington and Moscow. However, Kyiv must now also agree on the deal.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">The <strong>hoped-for<\/strong> telephone conversation occurred\u00a0today (March 18) between <strong>Donald Trump<\/strong> and <strong>Vladimir Putin<\/strong> to unblock the delicate game over\u00a0a\u00a0<strong>ceasefire<\/strong>\u00a0<strong>in\u00a0Ukraine\u00a0<\/strong>lasted a couple of hours. According to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/ru.usembassy.gov\/president-donald-j-trumps-call-with-president-vladimir-putin\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">an official statement<\/a> released by the US Embassy in Russia, &#8220;both leaders agreed<strong> this conflict needs to end with a lasting peace<\/strong>&#8221; and\u00a0&#8220;agreed that the movement to peace will begin with an <strong>energy and infrastructure ceasefire<\/strong>, as well as technical negotiations on the implementation of a <strong>maritime ceasefire<\/strong> in the Black Sea, <strong>full ceasefire <\/strong>and permanent peace.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">The Kremlin also announced that a <strong>prisoner exchange between Russia and Ukraine <\/strong>will occur tomorrow, involving 175 detainees from each side. After all,\u00a0 <strong>Steve Witkoff<\/strong> &#8211; on whom the New York-based <i>tycoon<\/i> seems to be banking as a kind of <strong>super-negotiator<\/strong> and who prepared the ground for today&#8217;s call by meeting in person with the Kremlin chief last week &#8211; is officially the White House&#8217;s special envoy for the Middle East.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Trump and Putin also &#8220;stressed the need to <strong>improve bilateral relations between the US and Russia<\/strong>,&#8221; agreeing about the &#8220;huge upside&#8221; this will bring to both countries (including, the statement concluded, &#8220;<strong>enormous economic deals and geopolitical stability\u00a0<\/strong>when peace has been achieved&#8221;\u00a0in the former Soviet republic).<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">However, as\u00a0<strong>Ursula von der Leyen<\/strong>\u00a0noted during <a href=\"https:\/\/audiovisual.ec.europa.eu\/en\/video\/I-269465\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">a visit to Copenhagen<\/a>, the terms the US administration agreed (separately) with the Ukrainian and Russian counterparts do not seem to be\u00a0<strong>the same<\/strong>. The understanding between Trump and Putin is &#8220;<strong>a good start,<\/strong>&#8221; according to the outgoing German chancellor, for whom &#8220;<strong>the next step must be a comprehensive ceasefire<\/strong> <strong>as soon as possible<\/strong>.&#8221; The French president stressed that peace &#8220;cannot be achieved <strong>without Ukraine taking part in negotiations<\/strong>.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Today&#8217;s was the second phone call between the two presidents, following the one on Feb. 12 that took\u00a0diplomacies halfway around the world &#8212; and especially those of Washington&#8217;s Western allies &#8212; by surprise, including Ukraine itself, which had seen itself bypassed by the two superpowers and feared not being included in the negotiating table.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>During a phone call, the two presidents reached an understanding on a watered-down version of the proposal negotiated last week by the US and Ukrainian teams.
