Despite ongoing talks with the United States, there is little willingness by\u00a0the Russian side to reach a real truce any time soon, nor to respect the (partial)( one agreed on with Donald Trump last night &#8212; as can be seen\u00a0by the attacks\u00a0Moscow swiftly ordered on the former Soviet republic, as well as the conditions put forward by the occupant of the Kremlin to accept a halt\u00a0to the fighting, unacceptable for\u00a0Kyiv.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Following a script\u00a0that has become familiar to the world, <strong>Vladimir Putin <\/strong>again kicks the ball into the stands\u00a0without admitting it publicly. He had done so before meeting with the White House envoy for the Middle East, <strong>Steve Witkoff<\/strong> (who, despite his title, is also leading the negotiations on the war in Ukraine),\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/en\/2025\/03\/13\/putin-stalls-on-ceasefire-in-ukraine\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">stalling<\/a>\u00a0by placing <strong>a series of onerous conditions<\/strong> on the form a ceasefire should take to be acceptable to Moscow.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">He did it again last night when <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/en\/2025\/03\/18\/ukraine-trump-and-putin-agree-to-a-partial-30-day-ceasefire\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">he spoke on the phone<\/a>\u00a0with <strong>Donald Trump<\/strong> for the second time in two months. Officially, as stated in the <a href=\"http:\/\/kremlin.ru\/events\/president\/news\/76477\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Kremlin<\/a> statement after the talks, the Russian leader reportedly agreed with his US counterpart to\u00a0<strong>a 30-day truce in bombings against energy and civilian infrastructure<\/strong> between the two belligerent countries.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_420624\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\" style=\"width: 1024px;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/000_36ZD7YR-scaled.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-420624 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/000_36ZD7YR-1024x680.jpg\" alt=\"Donald Trump\" width=\"1024\" height=\"680\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/000_36ZD7YR-1024x680.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/000_36ZD7YR-300x199.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/000_36ZD7YR-768x510.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/000_36ZD7YR-1536x1019.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/000_36ZD7YR-2048x1359.jpg 2048w, https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/000_36ZD7YR-750x498.jpg 750w, https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/000_36ZD7YR-1140x756.jpg 1140w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-420624\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">US president Donald Trump (photo: Jim Watson\/Afp)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p class=\"p1\">Putin says he is ready to &#8220;work with his American partners on <strong>a thorough examination of possible solutions<\/strong>, which should be comprehensive, sustainable, and long-term.&#8221; And, of course, taking into account the &#8220;unconditional need to <strong>eliminate the root causes of the crisis<\/strong> and Russia&#8217;s <strong>legitimate security interests<\/strong>.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">However, the Russian note mentions, among other things, a condition deemed &#8220;fundamental&#8221; by the Federation &#8220;to prevent the escalation of the conflict and work toward its resolution&#8221; diplomatically: &#8220;The <strong>complete cessation of foreign military assistance<\/strong> and the <strong>provision of intelligence information<\/strong>&#8221; to Kyiv:\u00a0a\u00a0point\u00a0that, <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/live\/donald-trump-news-updates-3-18-2025#00000195-aba7-dd96-a797-bfb7d4810000\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">according to statements made by<\/a>\u00a0Trump was\u00a0not addressed during the call.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">More importantly, this is an unacceptable <strong>condition for both Ukraine and its European allies<\/strong>, who just these days <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/en\/2025\/03\/17\/kallas-40-billion-plan-for-ukraine-does-not-convince-italy\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">renewed<\/a> (at least some) a commitment to support the former Soviet republic with <strong>new shipments of funds, weapons,\u00a0and ammunition<\/strong>.
