Brussels – According to data\u00a0published today<\/a> (March 20) by Eurostat, asylum claims in the EU\u00a0decreased<\/strong> <\/strong>in the past year. The EU statistical agency said that in 2024,\u00a0912 thousand third country<\/strong>\u00a0citizens applied\u00a0<\/strong>for international protection in a\u00a0member state for the first time, down\u00a013 percent from<\/strong>\u00a0the previous year, the first year-to-year drop since 2019.<\/p>\n

In terms of nationality<\/strong>,\u00a0Syrians<\/strong> ranked first (148,000 applications, 16 percent of the total), followed by\u00a0Venezuelans<\/strong>\u00a0(72,800 applications, or 8 percent) and\u00a0Afghans<\/strong>, which ranked third for the first time in six years (72,200 or 7.8 percent).<\/p>\n

The countries that received the most applications<\/strong> were Germany<\/strong> (229,700 ), Spain<\/strong> (164,000), Italy<\/strong> and France<\/strong> (151,100 and 130.900),\u00a0together accounting for about\u00a082 percent of all asylum applications<\/strong> filed, with specific peculiarities: Italy<\/strong> received most applications from Peruvians\u00a0<\/strong>(58 percent). In comparison,\u00a0France saw a sharp increase in applications for protection from Ukrainians<\/strong> (+90 percent). Germany alone received 25 percent of total applications for protection, while Italy received 17 percent<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Taking into account the aggregate population of the 27 member states, on average, two\u00a0applications for international protection were made for every 1,000 EU citizens<\/strong> in the year under review. Of course, this figure varies significantly from one member state to another: the highest ratio<\/strong> of asylum seekers to population was in Cyprus\u00a0<\/strong>(7.2 applications per 1,000 inhabitants), Greece<\/strong> (6.6 applications), and Ireland <\/b>and Spain<\/strong> (both with 3.4 applications). In Italy,<\/strong> this figure stands at 0.2 applications per thousand inhabitants<\/strong>, not precisely the numbers showing an “ethnic replacement.”<\/p>\n

Unaccompanied minors totaled\u00a036,300,<\/strong> of whom 13,300 applied in Germany<\/strong> (37 percent of the total number of unaccompanied minors), 4,300 in The Netherlands<\/strong> (12 percent), and 4,000 in Greece (12 percent). Of these, 11,600 were from Syria<\/strong> (32 percent), 5,700 from Afghanistan<\/strong> (16 percent), and 2,400 from Somalia<\/strong> (7 percent).<\/b><\/p>\n

The issue of migration was the central theme of the coordination meeting<\/strong> held this morning before the European Council<\/a><\/strong> and chaired by Italian prime minister Giorgia Meloni<\/strong>, Dutch prime minister Dick Schoof, and Danish prime minister Mette Frederiksen. In addition to European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, heads of state or government from Austria, Belgium, Cyprus, Denmark, Finland, Greece, Hungary, Latvia, Malta, the Netherlands, Poland, the Czech Republic, and Sweden attended the meeting.<\/p>\n

The EU leader outlined the crackdown on repatriations\u00a0presented<\/a> to the heads of state and government\u00a0on March 11.
