Brussels -The eyes of the world will again turn to\u00a0Saudi Arabia<\/strong> on Monday (March 24) to scrutinize\u00a0the dual meeting of the US delegation<\/strong> with the negotiating teams from\u00a0Russia and Ukraine<\/strong>. On the agenda are mainly the details of the truce in the skies <\/strong>and the safety of navigation in the Black Sea.<\/strong> At the same time, the issue of the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant<\/strong>, which the White House reportedly has its eye on, seems to have been excluded for now.<\/p>\n

Speaking to reporters alongside Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr St\u00f8re<\/strong> from Oslo, where he was visiting while the leaders of the 27 member states\u00a0renewed from Brussels<\/a> their support for the former Soviet republic, Volodymyr Zelensky<\/strong> confirmed yesterday (March 20) that on Monday,\u00a0a Ukrainian delegation will travel to Riyadh to meet with US negotiators<\/strong>.\u00a0He explained that there would be\u00a0two separate<\/strong> bilateral meetings<\/strong> in the Saudi capital: the US\u00a0team would sit at the table first with Kyiv’s team and then with\u00a0Moscow’s.<\/p>\n

The objective is to agree\u00a0on the technical aspects of the 30-day partial ceasefire<\/strong> approved on paper<\/a> by both countries, which, for the time being, no one is abiding by since reciprocal shelling has not yet stopped<\/strong>. The main issue\u00a0to be solved for the truce to go into effect concerns the type of infrastructure to spare<\/strong> from missiles and drones under the agreement: the Russians would like to narrow it down to only energy infrastructure,<\/strong> while the Ukrainians are pushing to include civilian infrastructure<\/strong> such as ports and rail networks.<\/p>\n

The Russian side also confirmed the upcoming talks. Kremlin spokesman Dmitri Peskov<\/strong> referred to the so-called “Black Sea Initiative<\/strong>,” which Vladimir Putin<\/strong> and Donald Trump<\/strong> discussed in their phone call<\/a>\u00a0on\u00a0Tuesday (March 18). Based on the discussion between the two presidents, a pause in maritime fighting<\/strong> should be a second step after the halt in aerial bombardment and a prelude to a broader ceasefire<\/strong>\u00a0that\u00a0includes land operations<\/strong>, a prerequisite for starting negotiations on a permanent peace.<\/p>\n

Zelensky denied that he had discussed with the White House occupant the possible transfer of ownership of the Zaporizhzhia<\/strong> power plant, Europe’s largest nuclear plant (in 2021, it supplied about a quarter of Ukraine’s entire electricity production) to the US. With the tycoon<\/i>, if anything, he\u00a0talked about managing the facility<\/strong>, which\u00a0Moscow’s troops\u00a0currently control<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The Ukrainian leader also\u00a0said he had not confronted Trump about the future of Crimea<\/strong>, the peninsula formally part of Ukrainian territory that the Federation<\/strong>\u00a0unilaterally annexed in 2014<\/strong>.\u00a0According to many observers, the US president would be inclined to\u00a0propose yielding it to Putin<\/strong> to accelerate negotiations toward ending the conflict.
