And simultaneously <strong>moving away from Russia<\/strong>. Armenia&#8217;s parliament has passed a bill committing the government to begin <strong>negotiations on EU accession<\/strong> as soon as possible. The next step should now be a popular referendum.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">On the morning of today (March 26), deputies in the former Soviet republic <strong>adopted by a large majority<\/strong>\u201464 votes in favour and seven against on the second reading\u2014a measure calling on the executive branch to <strong>set in motion the long and complex process to become a member state<\/strong> of the 12-star club. The process had been set in motion by a <strong>popular petition<\/strong> that exceeded the legal threshold of 50,000 signatures, leading Prime Minister <strong>Nikol Pashinyan<\/strong> to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/en\/2025\/01\/10\/armenian-government-wants-to-join-the-european-union\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">put the question <\/a>of accession on the table of the chamber\u00a0on 9 January.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span style=\"text-align: inherit; color: var(--body-color); font-family: var(--body-font-family); font-weight: var(--body-font-weight);\">Arguing that this is a will shared by the\u00a0<\/span><strong style=\"text-align: inherit; color: var(--body-color); font-family: var(--body-font-family);\">majority of the population<\/strong><span style=\"text-align: inherit; color: var(--body-color); font-family: var(--body-font-family); font-weight: var(--body-font-weight);\">, the premier has long reiterated the need to\u00a0<\/span><strong style=\"text-align: inherit; color: var(--body-color); font-family: var(--body-font-family);\">bring the Caucasian country into the European orbit<\/strong><span style=\"text-align: inherit; color: var(--body-color); font-family: var(--body-font-family); font-weight: var(--body-font-weight);\">, disengaging it simultaneously from Moscow.<\/span>\u00a0But it will not be easy to sever the umbilical cord that still binds it to the Federation, especially <strong>in economic and energy terms<\/strong>, and the Kremlin has already threatened repercussions if the Yerevan government goes its own way.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_422703\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\" style=\"width: 1024px;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/Imagoeconomica_2378883-scaled.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-422703 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/Imagoeconomica_2378883-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"Ant\u00f3nio Costa Nikol Pashinyan\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/Imagoeconomica_2378883-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/Imagoeconomica_2378883-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/Imagoeconomica_2378883-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/Imagoeconomica_2378883-1536x1024.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/Imagoeconomica_2378883-2048x1365.jpg 2048w, https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/Imagoeconomica_2378883-750x500.jpg 750w, https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/Imagoeconomica_2378883-1140x760.jpg 1140w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-422703\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">European Council President Ant\u00f3nio Costa (left) and Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan (photo: Frederic Sierakowski via Imagoeconomica)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p class=\"p1\">Today&#8217;s adoption by the chamber\u00a0opens the door to the <strong>referendum consultation<\/strong> called for by the signatories of the popular petition\u00a0<span style=\"margin: 0px; padding: 0px;\">to\u00a0<strong>begin negotiations with Brussels formally<\/strong><\/span>.\u00a0<span style=\"margin: 0px; padding: 0px;\">However, EU membership is a <strong>bumpy and uphill<\/strong>\u00a0<strong>path<\/strong>, which can take years and does not\u00a0<\/span>guarantee a positive outcome, as the experiences of <strong>Turkey and Georgia<\/strong>, to name a couple, show.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Two MEPs, Latvian socialist <strong>Nils U\u0161akovs<\/strong> and popular Slovakian <strong>Miriam Lexmann<\/strong>, welcomed the Yerevan parliament&#8217;s vote: &#8220;We take note of this decision and welcome it as another clear expression of Armenia&#8217;s <strong>firm commitment to our shared values<\/strong> and the country&#8217;s democratic path,&#8221; reads a joint statement. Pashinyan has already signalled a willingness to <strong>engage in dialogue with Brussels<\/strong> as soon as possible to put pen to paper on a roadmap leading to accession through concrete measures such as <strong>visa liberalisation<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Mid-month, Armenia <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/en\/2025\/03\/14\/armenia-and-azerbaijan-agree-on-the-terms-of-a-peace-treaty\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">found a provisional\u00a0understanding<\/a> with neighbouring Azerbaijan on entering into a <strong>peace agreement<\/strong> to end decades of contentious relations, mainly due to the <strong>territorial dispute in Nagorno-Karabakh<\/strong>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The small Caucasian country, Moscow&#8217;s traditional ally in the region, is slowly moving closer to Europe under the impetus of Premier Pashinyan.
