Eurostat&#8217;s preliminary data is good news for the 20 EU member states with the single currency, as it appears to confirm the ECB&#8217;s own estimates for a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/en\/2024\/03\/20\/lagarde-2-per-cent-inflation-by-mid-2025-earlier-than-expected\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">return to preferred levels by mid-year<\/a>, despite international and trade turbulence.<\/p>\n<div class=\"flourish-embed flourish-chart\" data-src=\"visualisation\/22423559\"><script src=\"https:\/\/public.flourish.studio\/resources\/embed.js\"><\/script><noscript><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/public.flourish.studio\/visualisation\/22423559\/thumbnail\" width=\"100%\" alt=\"chart visualization\" \/><\/noscript><\/div>\n<p><span class=\"HwtZe\" lang=\"en\"><span class=\"jCAhz ChMk0b\"><span class=\"ryNqvb\"><strong>The slowdown was driven by energy<\/strong> (-0.7 percent in March, down from 0.2 percent in February) <strong>and services<\/strong> (3.4 percent, down from 3.7 percent in the previous month). In\u00a0contrast, the non-energy industrial goods component was stable (0.6 percent, unchanged). Bucking the trend was food, alcohol, and tobacco, which increased (2.9 percent, up from 2.7 percent in February).<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"HwtZe\" lang=\"en\"><span class=\"jCAhz ChMk0b\"><span class=\"ryNqvb\">\u00a0Between February and March, inflation decreased in Germany and Spain, remained unchanged in France, and increased in Italy. However,\u00a0despite the different dynamics, except for France, the values of the biggest economies show a cost-of-living rate in line with the ECB&#8217;s benchmark targets.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ecb.europa.eu\/ecb\/decisions\/govc\/html\/index.en.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Governing Council<\/a>\u00a0of the European Central Bank will meet <strong>to decide on<\/strong>\u00a0<strong>monetary policy on April 17<\/strong>, in time for the final\u00a0data that the European Statistical Office will provide on April 16. There seems to be an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/en\/2025\/03\/06\/ecb-cuts-rates-by-0-25-pct-pts-but-warns-of-tariff-risks-to-inflation-and-growth\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"_blank noopener\">intention to pause in the\u00a0cutting of interest rates due to rising downside\u00a0risks to the economy and inflation.<\/a> Meanwhile, inflation is falling, and this is certainly welcomed data.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Preliminary data released by Eurostat shows a drop, bringing it closer to the ECB&#8217;s target rate.
