There are the usual distinctions, of course: mostly geography and political affiliation influence\u00a0the responses, with an interesting optical effect that returns the image of a <strong>horseshoe<\/strong>, where the extremes of far-right and far-left are closer to each other\u00a0than they are to the center.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">More than two out of three Europeans agree with <strong>tariff\u00a0countermeasures<\/strong> from Brussels in response to Washington&#8217;s tariffs, which should take effect\u00a0next week. However, opinions on potentially\u00a0<strong>sending troops to Ukraine<\/strong>\u00a0are less clear-cut, as are those on the <strong>balance between the Green Deal and economic growth<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h3 id='european-rearmament-and-the-war-in-ukraine'  id=\"boomdevs_1\" class=\"p1\">European rearmament and the war in Ukraine<\/h3>\n<p class=\"p1\">According to the latest poll by the <a href=\"https:\/\/pollingeurope.eu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong><i>Polling Europe<\/i><\/strong><\/a> Institute, which collected responses from more than 5 thousand citizens in the 27 member states\u00a0during March, nearly three out of four Europeans say they\u00a0<strong>would support an increase in national military spending<\/strong> should\u00a0<strong>Uncle Sam stop guaranteeing continental security<\/strong>. They approve, in effect, the spirit of <strong>Ursula von der Leyen&#8217;s<\/strong>\u00a0<strong>ReArm Europe <i>plan<\/i><\/strong>\u00a0that loosens the reins for governments to incur\u00a0unlimited autonomous debt.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Thirty-nine percent say the chancelleries should increase their defense budgets &#8220;sharply,&#8221; while 34 percent would prefer a &#8220;<strong>slight&#8221; increase,<\/strong> for a total of 73 percent. The difference from March last year, when <strong>Joe Biden<\/strong> was still in the White House, is marginal (72 percent twelve months ago). For all other areas, the percentages in favor are <strong>above average<\/strong>: 79 percent in Germany and Northern Europe, 76 percent in France, Spain, and Central and Eastern Europe.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">In terms of political groups, the most staunch proponents of continental rearmament are undoubtedly the voters of the <strong>Renew Liberals<\/strong> (87 percent) and the <strong>Populars<\/strong> (86 percent), followed by the <strong>Socialists<\/strong> (77 percent) and <strong>Conservatives<\/strong> (75 percent). In contrast, the most skeptical are those identifying themselves with the <strong>Left<\/strong> and the <strong>ESN<\/strong> Sovereignists: 42 and 32 percent\u00a0believe that the 27 member states should not increase\u00a0defense spending.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">The picture becomes more uncertain\u00a0regarding the potential <strong>sending of European troops to Ukraine<\/strong> as a monitoring force for a possible ceasefire (i.e., as <strong><i>peacekeepers<\/i><\/strong>, although it should be noted that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/en\/2025\/03\/27\/ukraine-macron-announces-european-reassurance-force\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">this is not what\u00a0the so-called &#8220;willing ones&#8221; led by <strong>Emmanuel Macron<\/strong> and <strong>Keir Starmer<\/strong> are talking about<\/a> ). At the political level, leading the <strong>&#8220;interventionist&#8221;\u00a0<\/strong>front are still the Liberals (56 percent) followed by Christian Democrats and Social Democrats (both at 55 percent), while the &#8220;P<strong>acifists<\/strong>&#8221; are again in the extreme areas of the Sovereignist ultra-right and the radical left (59 and 44 percent opposed, respectively), followed by the nationalists of the Patriots (42 percent).<\/p>\n<h3 id='tariffs-and-counter-tariffs'  id=\"boomdevs_2\" class=\"p1\">Tariffs and counter-tariffs<\/h3>\n<p class=\"p1\">Even on economic issues, Europeans have divided opinions. After the (widely announced) shock of <strong>tariffs that the Donald Trump<\/strong>\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/en\/2025\/04\/03\/von-der-leyen-reacts-to-trumps-global-tariffs-dire-consequences-but-we-are-ready-to-respond\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">administration imposed<\/a>, more than two-thirds of those surveyed by <i>Polling Europe<\/i> (67 percent) agree with the\u00a0<strong>adoption of countermeasures by Brussels<\/strong>, even at the cost of higher prices for affected consumer goods. The least enthusiastic about the idea of trade escalation with Washington are the <strong>sympathizers of the various right<\/strong> in the European Parliament: 34 percent of those who vote for parties affiliated with the ESN, 26 percent of conservative voters, and 20 percent of those from the Patriots group.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Still, regarding EU-US economic relations, 68 percent of respondents believe that the 27 member states\u00a0should <strong>invest more in &#8220;technology&#8221; to break free from dependence<\/strong> on the US\u00a0ally (primarily Spanish and French, at 75 and 74 percent). In comparison, only 12 percent (including 17 percent of Germans) say we can continue to <strong>rely on overseas technologies.<\/strong><\/p>\n<h3 id='environmental-policies'  id=\"boomdevs_3\">Environmental Policies<\/h3>\n<p class=\"p1\">Finally, the most controversial issue seems to be the <strong>Green Deal<\/strong> and the effect of environmental regulations on the <strong>health of European industry<\/strong>. Instead, those who would like more stringent regulations are mainly <strong>Italians and Spaniards<\/strong> (36 and 34 percent). At the political level, this response is popular among sympathizers of the <strong>Greens<\/strong> (53 percent) and the <strong>Left<\/strong> (47 percent).<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">One-fifth of respondents\u00a0say that the <strong>balance achieved<\/strong> by the twelve-star legislation is <strong>satisfactory<\/strong>.\u00a0 Among them, the highest percentages are in <strong>Spain and Germany<\/strong> (22 and 21 percent), as well as among those who vote <strong>Renew, the EPP, and S&amp;D<\/strong> (28, 26, and 25 percent, respectively), which makes sense given that these very political forces have drafted most European legislation.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>According to a recent survey, EU citizens are broadly aligned with Brussels&#8217; decisions on military spending and response to Trump&#8217;s protectionism.
