Preliminary data released by\u00a0<strong>Frontex<\/strong>, the European Border and Coast Guard Agency,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.frontex.europa.eu\/media-centre\/news\/news-release\/eu-external-borders-irregular-crossings-fall-by-a-third-in-q1-2025-k2RWuR\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">show<\/a>\u00a0that\u00a0arrivals in the <strong>first quarter of 2025<\/strong> fell by 31 percent (<strong>33 thousand)<\/strong>, with the Western Balkan route experiencing the most significant decline (minus 64 percent).<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">In March alone, the number of arrivals\u00a0from the <strong>Central Mediterranean<\/strong> (about 8500) decreased by three-quarters compared to the previous year. On the <strong>Channel\u200b <\/strong>route, the number of migrants attempting to reach the UK decreased by 4 percent from last year, with slightly more than 11200\u00a0detections. According to Frontex, the main <strong>nationalities<\/strong> of irregular migrants this year have been Afghans, Malians, and Bengalis.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">&#8220;For border protection to work, we need to\u00a0<strong>strengthen our cooperation with third countries<\/strong>. Preventing dangerous travel means saving lives. That is precisely the goal of our agreements with third countries. And they are having an effect,&#8221; European Commissioner for Internal\u00a0Affairs <strong>Magnus Brunner<\/strong>\u00a0said on\u00a0X. There are, in fact, still many who lose their lives trying to reach the EU.\u00a0As the World Organization for Migration reports, <strong>385<\/strong> migrants <strong>died<\/strong> in the Mediterranean between January and March 2025.
