In the <strong>early federal election,<\/strong> the <strong>Liberal Party<\/strong> of Prime Minister <strong>Mark Carney<\/strong> won, against the predictions of a few months ago. It was mostly\u00a0the outbursts of the US president &#8212; who for months has been\u00a0fantasizing about <strong>annexing the northern neighbor as the 51st state of the Union &#8212;<\/strong> that weighed on the Canadian vote, effectively turning it into a <strong>test of national unity<\/strong> in the face of Washington&#8217;s about-face.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">The polls closed at 10 p.m. local time last night (April 28), but counting is\u00a0ongoing. The <a href=\"https:\/\/enr.elections.ca\/National.aspx?lang=e\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">preliminary results<\/a>\u00a0<strong>assigned the victory to the center-left liberals<\/strong> of current PM <strong>Mark Carney,<\/strong> with <strong>43.5 percent of the votes<\/strong>, against 41.4 percent for the Conservatives led by <strong>Pierre Poilievre<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Of the <strong>343 members of the House of Commons<\/strong>, the lower branch of the federal legislature, <strong>at least 168 will go to the Liberal Party<\/strong>, while the Conservatives are expected to stop at 144. Since the threshold for a majority in the House is <strong>172 seats<\/strong>, Carney could lead a <strong>minority executive<\/strong> or try to set up a <strong>coalition government<\/strong>. However,\u00a0f<strong>or the Conservative leader, the political closeness to Donald Trump was fatal. <\/strong>Yesterday&#8217;s vote effectively became a <strong>question of unity, national security<\/strong>, and a <strong>referendum on the White House occupant.<\/strong><br \/>\nTrump, who <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/en\/2025\/01\/08\/trumps-threats-over-greenland-canada-and-panama\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">for months<\/a>\u00a0has been insisting on Canada&#8217;s potential <strong>entry into the United States as the 51st member of the Union,<\/strong>\u00a0hit Ottawa with <strong>heavy trade tariffs<\/strong> and went so far as to carry out, yesterday, a full-blown <strong>election interference<\/strong>, suggesting voters vote for Poilievre. A victory by the latter would bring <strong>economic prosperity and security<\/strong> to the &#8220;Great People of Canada,&#8221; the New York tycoon wrote\u00a0in his Social <em>Truth.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>This interference did not sit well even with Poilievre himself, who had to turn to his (former?) ally and ask him to &#8220;<strong>stay out<\/strong>&#8221; of the democratic processes of a sovereign nation. &#8220;<strong>The only people who will decide Canada&#8217;s future are Canadians at the ballot box<\/strong>,&#8221; the Conservative leader wrote on X, reiterating,\u00a0&#8220;<strong>Canada will always be proud, sovereign, and independent and will NEVER be the 51st state<\/strong>.&#8221; &#8220;Today, Canadians can vote for change so that we can strengthen our country, stand on our own two feet, and <strong>face America from a position of strength<\/strong>,&#8221; he added.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Carney declared\u00a0victory at dawn today, stating\u00a0that Ottawa will &#8220;never&#8221; yield\u00a0to the neo-imperialism that is an all too clear signature\u00a0of\u00a0Trumpism and promising to &#8220;<strong>represent all those who call Canada home<\/strong>.&#8221; &#8220;President <strong>Trump is trying to break us<\/strong> so that America can own us,&#8221; he said.\u00a0 &#8220;T<strong>hat will never, ever happen,&#8221; <\/strong>he promised<strong>.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">It is a <strong>historic watershed in Canadian politics<\/strong>. It\u00a0has traditionally considered\u00a0the United\u00a0States a solid ally (both countries are part of the G7 and NATO along with European partners). &#8220;<strong>We are over the shock of the American betrayal<\/strong>, but we should never forget the lessons,&#8221; Carney noted. &#8220;<strong>We have to look out for ourselves.<\/strong> And above all, we have to take care of each other.&#8221; The prime minister pledged <strong>to reduce the national economy&#8217;s dependence on Washington<\/strong> while deepening ties with more &#8220;reliable&#8221; allies. The Conservative leader is even in danger of not returning to Parliament, having fallen behind in the single-member challenge in his Ontario constituency. &#8220;<strong>We will always put Canada first<\/strong> as we face tariffs and other <strong>irresponsible threats from President Trump<\/strong>,&#8221; he said, distancing himself from the <i>tycoon<\/i>&#8216;s indefensible positions. He promised to <strong>work with Carney for the\u00a0 country&#8217;s good<\/strong> while noting that the premier will\u00a0lead a &#8220;razor-thin minority government.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">The other side of the Atlantic welcomed the Liberals&#8217; victory.
