Brussels – The Trump cyclone<\/strong>\u00a0also seems\u00a0about\u00a0to hit Australia<\/strong>. As just happened in Canada, voters in the Oceanic country may end up being guided, in the secrecy of the ballot box, more by concerns about “threats” from Washington<\/strong> than by domestic issues, to the advantage of the outgoing premier, Labor’s Anthony Albanese<\/strong>, and to the detriment of Liberal leader Peter Dutton<\/strong>, who is paying for political proximity to the New York tycoon<\/em>.<\/p>\n

On Saturday (May 3), Australians will be called upon to renew the three-year term of the bicameral Parliament in Canberra<\/strong>, dissolved last March 28. The electoral system is relatively complex (and voting is compulsory for all citizens over 18), but what appears likely is that from the ballots, the Labor Party<\/strong> of the resigning prime minister Anthony Albanese<\/strong>, who has led the government since 2022, will emerge the winner.<\/a><\/p>\n

In fact, the\u00a0Labor Party took the lead\u00a0<\/strong>in voting intentions\u00a0recently\u00a0<\/strong>after Donald Trump<\/strong> began shaking\u00a0world politics<\/strong>. Until January, when the 47th US president took office, the Coalition<\/strong>, the center-right liberal group\u00a0led by Peter Dutton,<\/strong> was in the lead. <\/strong>However, the mood has changed in Australia since then.<\/p>\n

Liberals, historically closer to the United States than other political forces, have been particularly hurt by\u00a0the imposition of tariffs<\/strong> by the\u00a0White House and by actions\u00a0of\u00a0 Washington’s Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) activities —\u00a0<\/strong>through which Elon Musk<\/strong> has taken a sledgehammer at federal agencies — that Dutton<\/strong> had<\/strong>\u00a0emulated in his shadow cabinet<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Saturday’s vote, which was supposed\u00a0to be a judgment of Albanese’s performance<\/strong> over the past three years (his government has not been particularly popular among voters), has thus turned into a reflection<\/strong> on who will best protect Australia <\/strong>in this phase of global uncertainty. Almost 70 percent of citizens<\/strong> reportedly believe Trump to be “bad”\u00a0<\/strong>for the Oceanic country. Canberra is primarily dependent on Washington in the economic<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0security<\/strong> spheres.<\/p>\n

In Australia’s complicated system, many polls devote a specific survey to determine which party would win if the contest were held in a two-way tie.\u00a0In this case, the difference\u00a0between Albanese’s Labor and Dutton’s Coalition <\/strong>varies between 3 and 6 percentage points, averaging\u00a052 percent<\/strong> for the former and 48 percent<\/strong> for the latter.<\/p>\n

The dynamic closely resembles what just took place in Canada, where the outgoing center-left premier, Mark Carney<\/strong>, managed to turn around a difficult situation for his party and remain in power<\/a> for another term, all thanks to what analysts have dubbed the “Trump effect<\/strong>” (felt even more so in Ottawa because of the tycoon<\/em>‘s ranting about annexing the Arctic neighbor<\/strong>).<\/p>\n

In the House of Representatives<\/strong>, the lower branch of the Australian Parliament will have a ceiling of 150 MPs starting next term, and the majority threshold will be 76 seats.<\/strong> Should Labor fail to obtain an absolute majority, it will have to form a minority executive<\/strong> or, more likely, ally with smaller parties or independent MPs and form a coalition government.<\/strong><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
