{"id":425489,"date":"2025-05-05T10:38:56","date_gmt":"2025-05-05T08:38:56","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/2025\/05\/05\/afd-partito-estremista-germania\/"},"modified":"2025-05-05T12:32:50","modified_gmt":"2025-05-05T10:32:50","slug":"german-intelligence-classifies-afd-as-far-right-group","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/en\/2025\/05\/05\/german-intelligence-classifies-afd-as-far-right-group\/","title":{"rendered":"German intelligence classifies AfD as far-right group"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Brussels &#8211; After a lengthy three-year investigation, the Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution in Germany\u00a0ruled that the nationalist and anti-migrant <strong>Alternative f\u00fcr Deutschland<\/strong> party was &#8220;an extreme rightwing organization&#8221; and &#8220;not compatible with the free democratic order.&#8221; The decision reopened the debate over a possible ban on AfD, which at February&#8217;s federal<a href=\"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/en\/2025\/02\/24\/merzs-cdu-wins-german-elections\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u00a0elections<\/a>\u00a0 was the second most-voted party in the country and is now the main opposition force in the Bundestag.<\/p>\n<p>In an over\u00a01,000-page report, the German intelligence service states that within the party, &#8220;a conception of the people based on ethnicity and descent predominates&#8221; and that AfD &#8220;aims to exclude certain population groups from equal participation in society, subject them to treatment that violates the constitution, and consequently assign them a legally subordinate status.&#8221; The party led by Tino Churupalla and Alice Weidel pursues\u00a0<strong>an &#8220;ethnically based&#8221; policy that &#8220;downgrades entire population groups<\/strong> in Germany and violates human dignity.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>While its leaders denounce a &#8220;severe blow&#8221; to democracy and announce appeals, the US administration goes even further, with the secretary of state, <strong>Marco Rubio<\/strong>, commenting in <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/SecRubio\/status\/1918344238468649055\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">a post<\/a> on X, &#8220;Germany just gave its spy agency new powers to surveil the opposition. That\u2019s <strong>not democracy\u2014it\u2019s tyranny in disguise<\/strong>.&#8221; Berlin&#8217;s Foreign Ministry immediately replied to Washington&#8217;s interference: &#8220;This is democracy. This decision is the result of a thorough &amp; independent investigation to protect our Constitution &amp; the rule of law. It is independent courts that will have the final say. The parliament or the federal government must file a request to the Constitutional Court to abolish a party, which would then have to examine and rule on the case. But politically speaking, banning AfD would mean eliminating a party voted for only three months ago by more than 10 million German citizens.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0px;\">\u00a0The hot potato will pass to <strong>Friedrich Merz<\/strong>, leader of the CDU, who is due\u00a0to take office as chancellor next week and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/en\/2025\/01\/30\/germanys-far-right-cordon-sanitaire-collapses-cdu-and-afd-align-against-migrants\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">recently<\/a> sought AfD&#8217;s\u00a0backing on the immigration dossier by breaking the long-standing cordon sanitaire against the far right. The outgoing chancellor, <strong>Olaf Scholz,\u00a0<\/strong>urged caution: &#8220;We have to evaluate this classification carefully,&#8221; the Social Democratic leader said Friday. According to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bild.de\/politik\/inland\/neuer-insa-sonntagstrend-erster-daempfer-fuer-die-afd-6815054c12ee6b68d1b82f1e\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">a survey<\/a>\u00a0published by the German newspaper Bild, <strong>48 percent of German citizens would favor\u00a0the ban<\/strong>, 37 percent opposed it, and 15 percent had\u00a0no clear opinion.
