It was a busy day at the Bundestag for <strong>Friedrich Merz<\/strong>, the leader of Germany&#8217;s conservatives, who came close to seeing his lifelong dream of <strong>becoming federal chancellor<\/strong> fade away. After setting an all-time (negative) record by missing the election on the first ballot, <strong>the leader of the CDU won\u00a0the vote in the second round<\/strong>, for which an absolute majority of the members of the House was still needed.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Now it is official: the tenth Bundeskanzler since the postwar period will be <strong>Friedrich Merz<\/strong>. The 69-year-old leader of the CDU was elected today (May 6) by the Berlin parliament on the <strong>second ballot with 325 votes in favour<\/strong>, 289 against, one abstention and three void ballots (to which 12 absentee ballots were added). An outcome that was thought to be a foregone conclusion, based on last February&#8217;s<a href=\"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/en\/2025\/02\/24\/merzs-cdu-wins-german-elections\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> election results<\/a>, but which until early afternoon <strong>seemed dangerously precarious<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<div class=\"flourish-embed flourish-parliament\" data-src=\"visualisation\/23031338\"><script src=\"https:\/\/public.flourish.studio\/resources\/embed.js\"><\/script><noscript><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/public.flourish.studio\/visualisation\/23031338\/thumbnail\" width=\"100%\" alt=\"parliament visualization\" \/><\/noscript><\/div>\n<p class=\"p1\">In the morning, assembly members <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/en\/2025\/05\/06\/chaos-in-germany-as-merz-fails-to-be-elected-chancellor-in-first-vote\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">had dealt a very serious blow<\/a> (unprecedented in the history of the Bundesrepublik) to the Christian Democratic leader&#8217;s political credibility, <strong>granting him only 310 &#8220;yes&#8221; votes on the first ballot<\/strong>. That is six fewer than those needed in the 21st legislature, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/en\/2025\/03\/25\/new-bundestag-officially-takes-office-in-berlin-with-ultra-right-and-left-likely-to-block-reforms\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">inaugurated in late March<\/a>, where the <strong>absolute majority is set at 316 seats<\/strong> out of 630.\u00a0<span style=\"text-align: inherit;\">But, above all, 18 fewer than those of the same majority that Merz is preparing to lead: a &#8220;<\/span><strong style=\"text-align: inherit;\">big coalition<\/strong><span style=\"text-align: inherit;\">&#8221; between the Union<\/span><em style=\"text-align: inherit;\">\u00a0<\/em><span style=\"text-align: inherit;\">(the CDU plus Markus S\u00f6der&#8217;s Bavarian CSU) and the Social Democrats of the SPD, which\u00a0<\/span><strong style=\"text-align: inherit;\">in the House holds 328 seats<\/strong><span style=\"text-align: inherit;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span style=\"text-align: inherit;\">This morning&#8217;s vote was followed by\u00a0<\/span><strong style=\"text-align: inherit;\">general shock<\/strong><span style=\"text-align: inherit;\">, especially among the benches of the future government partners, where, in all likelihood, there were <strong>rogue voters<\/strong><\/span><span style=\"margin: 0px; padding: 0px;\"><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/span><span style=\"text-align: inherit;\">during the secret ballot.<\/span>\u00a0But the hemicycle rearranged a second vote within a few hours, with the <strong>consensus of all parliamentary groups<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">After the parliamentary investiture, Merz will go\u00a0<strong>back and forth between the Bundestag<i> <\/i>and the presidential palace<\/strong>: after being formally appointed to head the executive branch by the head of state, <strong>Frank-Walter Steinmeier<\/strong>, he will have to take <strong>an oath on the Constitution<\/strong> in the Parliament, then return to the president to appoint the <strong>entire cabinet<\/strong> and then back to the hemicycle to swear in the entire government team. Not even twenty-four hours ago, <strong>Merz promised &#8220;a strong&#8221; and &#8220;reliable&#8221; government<\/strong> to lead Germany &#8220;in times of profound change.&#8221; To be sure, this morning&#8217;s misstep is not a good viaticum for conservatives and socialists, who face a series of momentous challenges to <strong>get the Old Continent&#8217;s leading economy<\/strong> back on track and reclaim Berlin&#8217;s traditional <strong>leadership role in the EU<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-o-mail-quote-node=\"1\" data-o-mail-quote=\"1\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"de\">Warm congratulations, dear Friedrich Merz <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Bundeskanzler?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">@Federal Chancellor<\/a>, on your appointment as Federal Chancellor of Germany.
