However, looming over <strong>Moscow&#8217;s Red Square<\/strong> is the threat of Ukrainian <strong>drones<\/strong>, potentially endangering the safety of the guests of honor invited by <strong>Vladimir Putin<\/strong> to attend the grand ceremony for the <strong>80th anniversary of the Soviet victory over Nazi Germany<\/strong>. The <strong>high-level politicians<\/strong> are expected to include some Europeans, including an EU member, while\u00a0<strong>a &#8220;counter-celebration&#8221;\u00a0<\/strong>will be held <strong>in Ukraine<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h3 id='all-of-putin-s-men'  id=\"boomdevs_1\" class=\"p1\">All of Putin&#8217;s men<\/h3>\n<p class=\"p1\">The <strong>public of great occasions<\/strong> is expected tomorrow (May 9) in the capital of the Federation. According to an attendance list released by the Kremlin,\u00a0nearly\u00a0<strong>thirty world leaders <\/strong>are expected to join <strong>Tsar <strong>Vladimir Putin <\/strong><\/strong>on\u00a0the grandstand<strong><strong>.<\/strong><\/strong> The most important guest is undoubtedly the Chinese leader <strong>Xi Jinping<\/strong>, who is in Moscow to reaffirm the &#8220;<strong>no-limit<\/strong>\u00a0<strong>friendship<\/strong>&#8221; proclaimed in February 2022, shortly before the large-scale invasion of Ukraine.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Then, there will be representatives of some countries aligned more or less explicitly with Moscow (or at least misaligned from Washington): from the Brazilian president <strong>Luiz In\u00e1cio Lula da Silva<\/strong> to his Venezuelan counterpart <strong>Nicol\u00e1s Maduro<\/strong>, passing, of course, through Putin&#8217;s other firm\u00a0ally, Minsk strongman <strong>Alexandr Lukashenko<\/strong>. A grand display\u00a0that, on the one hand, celebrates the <strong>historic victory of the USSR<\/strong> in the so-called &#8220;<strong>Great Patriotic War<\/strong>&#8221; (as the Second World War is referred to in\u00a0Russia) and, on the other, serves as a <strong>show<\/strong>\u00a0<strong>of strength<\/strong>\u00a0aimed at confronting<strong>\u00a0Kyiv and its Western allies<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h3 id='from-europe-with-fury'  id=\"boomdevs_2\" class=\"p1\">From Europe with fury?<\/h3>\n<p class=\"p1\">However,\u00a0the <strong>European guests <\/strong>are\u00a0causing the most considerable stir. The only leader of the 27 member states\u00a0in Red Square will be Slovakian Prime Minister <strong>Robert Fico<\/strong>, one of the Kremlin&#8217;s <strong>Trojan horses in the EU<\/strong> (the other is his Hungarian ally,\u00a0<strong>Viktor Orb\u00e1n<\/strong>). The participation of Bratislava&#8217;s premier has caused a <strong>rift\u00a0with Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania.<\/strong> In the past few hours, the three Baltic states have <strong>interdicted his airspace<\/strong> to prevent him from reaching Moscow, citing national security &#8220;concerns&#8221; as the official reason.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">The other heavyweight from the Old Continent\u00a0is Serbian President <strong>Aleksandar Vu\u010di\u0107<\/strong>, who is also very close to Russia. The latter announced plans to <strong>extend their trip to Kyiv<\/strong> once the Red Square celebrations are over. According to media reports, Cypriot independent <strong>Fidias Panayiotou<\/strong> could also travel to the Federation capital.<\/p>\n<h3 id='the-eu-stands-by-ukraine'  id=\"boomdevs_3\" class=\"p1\">The EU stands by Ukraine<\/h3>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0px;\">\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0px;\">On the other side of the fence, Ukraine rejected April&#8217;s\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/en\/2025\/04\/28\/putin-proposed-a-temporary-ceasefire-in-ukraine\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">proposal from the Russian president<\/a>\u00a0for a <strong>72-hour truce<\/strong> to\u00a0protect the Moscow parade. <strong>Volodymyr Zelensky<\/strong> stated that he cannot guarantee the security of the celebrations in Red Square, and the two belligerents <strong>have exchanged drone and missile attacks<\/strong> in recent days.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">A <strong>group of EU foreign ministers<\/strong> will arrive in Lviv tomorrow directly from Warsaw (where an informal Council was held yesterday and today) to attend the <strong>&#8220;counter-celebration&#8221; organized by Kyiv<\/strong>. Kallas, who is expected to lead the ministerial delegation, recently confirmed that <strong>two-thirds of the 2 million artillery shells<\/strong> that Brussels wants to supply to Kyiv (i.e., what remains of the High Representative&#8217;s ambitious <strong>40 billion plan<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/en\/2025\/03\/20\/member-states-bring-kallas-back-to-earth-ukraine-plan-slashed-from-40-billion-to-5-billion\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">that chancelleries rejected<\/a>) are ready.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Instead, foreign ministers should announce the imminent creation by the <strong>Council of Europe<\/strong> of the <strong>special tribunal<\/strong> for violations committed by the invading army: <strong>war crimes, crimes against humanity, and genocide<\/strong>, plus possibly the establishment of a new legal category (&#8220;<strong>crimes of aggression<\/strong>,&#8221; such as the unilateral annexation of territories of a sovereign state), to fill gaps in the mandate of the <strong>International Criminal Court<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0px;\">For the past three years, Kyiv has changed the date to commemorate <strong>World War II&#8217;s end.<\/strong> Traditionally, it was celebrated on May 9, the date on which the war officially ended in 1945, according to the <strong>Moscow Time Zone<\/strong> (the unconditional surrender of the German armies took effect at 11:01 p.m. on May 8 in East-Central Europe, which in the Soviet capital, however, was 00:01 a.m. the next day), while since 2022, it has <strong>brought forward the ceremonies to the previous day, <\/strong>to align with its European partners. On May 8, 80 years ago, the <strong>Third Reich stipulated capitulation in Berlin,<\/strong> as demanded by the USSR, which did not recognize the legal value of a similar document signed between Nazi commanders and the Allies in Reims the day before.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-o-mail-quote-node=\"1\" data-o-mail-quote=\"1\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">Eighty years ago, enemies laid down their arms.<\/p>\n<p>Since then, we, Europeans, have built something extraordinary: a Union of peace, democracy, and solidarity.
