Always with the same message: &#8220;<strong>Germany is back<\/strong>&#8221; and is preparing to take back the leading role it has traditionally occupied in the EU. Especially with regard to <strong>defence<\/strong>, <strong>competitiveness<\/strong>, and <strong>management of migration flows<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-align: inherit;\">To be sure,<\/span><strong style=\"text-align: inherit;\"> Friedrich Merz<\/strong><span style=\"text-align: inherit;\">\u00a0has not had a very boring few days<\/span>.\u00a0<span style=\"margin: 0px; padding: 0px;\">In the aftermath of his election as federal chancellor\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/en\/2025\/05\/06\/merz-secures-chancellor-position-in-bundestags-second-ballot\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">in a high-tension vote at the Bundestag<\/a>, the CDU leader\u00a0<strong>immediately travelled to Paris and Warsaw<\/strong>\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/en\/2025\/05\/07\/merz-and-macron-strengthen-franco-german-axis-starting-with-defence\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">to meet<\/a>\u00a0French President\u00a0<strong>Emmanuel Macron<\/strong>\u00a0and Polish Prime Minister\u00a0<strong>Donald Tusk<\/strong>.<\/span>\u00a0Today (May 9), <strong>Merz is meeting with the EU top leaders in Brussels<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h3 id='european-defence-and-ukraine'  id=\"boomdevs_1\">European Defence and Ukraine<\/h3>\n<p class=\"p1\">He began in the morning at the Europa Palace, where he had a brief exchange with the president of the European Council, <strong>Ant\u00f3nio Costa<\/strong>. The latter assured that he found &#8220;<strong>full alignment<\/strong>&#8221; between the priorities of the new government in Berlin and those of the Union on <strong>competitiveness, security, and migration<\/strong>, hoping that the Christian Democratic leader would &#8220;continue to <strong>keep Germany at the centre of European decision-making<\/strong>.&#8221;<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-o-mail-quote-node=\"1\" data-o-mail-quote=\"1\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">It was a pleasure to receive you on Europe Day, dear <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/bundeskanzler?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">@bundeskanzler<\/a> Friedrich Merz!<\/p>\n<p>We are fully aligned on our common priorities: building up our competitiveness and reindustrialising our economies, strengthening our defence capabilities, reinforcing our strategic autonomy,\u2026 <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/mlfBXdhiL5\">pic.twitter.com\/mlfBXdhiL5<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&#8211; Ant\u00f3nio Costa (@eucopresident)<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/eucopresident\/status\/1920761411556290611?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">May 9, 2025<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span style=\"text-align: inherit;\">The new Bundeskanzler reiterated that one of the priorities of the CDU-SPD executive is to join forces with EU partners to &#8220;<\/span><strong style=\"text-align: inherit;\">build a European defence industry<\/strong><span style=\"text-align: inherit;\">.&#8221;<\/span>\u00a0<span style=\"text-align: inherit;\">After all, European security, Merz repeated, is inextricably linked with the\u00a0<\/span><strong style=\"text-align: inherit;\">defence of Ukraine. Therefor. Therefore,<\/strong><span style=\"text-align: inherit;\">\u00a0<\/span><strong style=\"text-align: inherit;\">Berlin will continue\u00a0<\/strong><span style=\"margin: 0px; padding: 0px;\"><strong>supporting Kyiv<\/strong><\/span><span style=\"text-align: inherit;\">\u00a0on the ground and at the negotiating tables.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">In his telephone conversation last night with <strong>Donald Trump<\/strong>, the German leader &#8220;<strong>supported the U.S. proposal for a 30-day ceasefire<\/strong>&#8221; without conditions. However, he also noted that &#8220;pressure must be <strong>increased on Moscow<\/strong>&#8221; to accept a prolonged and total ceasefire, including through <strong>coordinated sanctions with Washington<\/strong>, if necessary.<\/p>\n<h3 id='tariffs-and-competitiveness'  id=\"boomdevs_2\">Tariffs and Competitiveness<\/h3>\n<p class=\"p1\">The other hot-button issue dealing with the United States is <strong>tariffs<\/strong>. Merz emphasised that <strong>EU trade is a common policy<\/strong> and that the White House cannot think of replicating bilateral agreements with member countries as it did with the UK.\u00a0<span style=\"margin: 0px; padding: 0px;\">The chancellor argues that Trump <strong>&#8220;understood this<\/strong>, &#8220;<\/span>\u00a0adding that he received an invitation from the tycoon. And he notes that &#8220;we also need to talk about <strong>mutual recognition of technological standards<\/strong>,&#8221; calling for further coordination between the chancelleries of the Twenty-Seven and with the Commission.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Having greeted Costa, Merz walked across the street to the Berlaymont, where he met with his party colleague <strong>Ursula von der Leyen<\/strong> (both come from the ranks of the CDU). The head of the 12-star executive said he agreed with the chancellor on the &#8220;need for a mindset of urgency&#8221; regarding at least four priorities related to the <strong>competitiveness dossier<\/strong>. To do that, &#8220;we need to <strong>reduce regulations<\/strong>&#8221; stifling\u00a0businesses, and so <strong>welcome any Omnibus packages<\/strong> that Brussels will want to propose.<\/p>\n<h3 id='migration-and-asylum'  id=\"boomdevs_3\">Migration and Asylum<\/h3>\n<p class=\"p1\">Another central issue is that of <strong>immigration<\/strong>. Berlin has in recent hours reintroduced <strong>border controls to &#8220;deal with illegal immigration,&#8221;<\/strong> explained the Bundeskanzler, assuring, however, that these <strong>measures are &#8220;fair, legal, and in line with European law&#8221;<\/strong> and stating that it has notified its neighbours.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">&#8220;The <strong>Dublin Regulation<\/strong> states that asylum should be sought in the country of first arrival, but Germany has no external borders.&#8221; Therefore,\u00a0<strong>it is not possible for so many requests to be made in the Bundesrepublik<\/strong>, he argued. However, <strong>we need to speed up the\u00a0<\/strong><span style=\"margin: 0px; padding: 0px;\"><strong>implementation\u00a0<\/strong>of the<strong>\u00a0Pact<\/strong><\/span><strong>\u00a0on Migration and Asylum<\/strong>, which &#8220;requires investment and a lot of work.&#8221; Once implemented, the new rules will &#8220;strengthen common external borders, provide a unified approach to entry conditions, and clarify solidarity mechanisms,&#8221; she certifies.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">In this regard, the\u00a0<span style=\"margin: 0px; padding: 0px;\">chairwoman<a href=\"https:\/\/ec.europa.eu\/commission\/presscorner\/detail\/en\/ip_25_1176\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u00a0also<\/a><\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/ec.europa.eu\/commission\/presscorner\/detail\/en\/ip_25_1176\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u00a0announced<\/a> that <strong>an additional \u20ac3 billion<\/strong> will be made available to Member States to transpose the provisions of the legislative package into their legal systems and <strong>implement them fully as soon as possible<\/strong>. On the other hand, the Commission chairwoman remarked that <strong>Member States must do more to increase returns<\/strong>, starting with partnerships with third countries.<\/p>\n<h3 id='the-symbolism-of-may-9'  id=\"boomdevs_4\">The symbolism of May 9<\/h3>\n<p class=\"p1\">Merz&#8217;s visit to Brussels did not take place\u00a0on just any day. Merz returns to the EU institutions today as head of government, but he had already served as an MEP between 1989 and 1994, when he &#8220;saw firsthand the development of <strong>legislation to create the European single market<\/strong>.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">&#8220;I am very happy to be able to visit the EU institutions on my third day in office,&#8221; he concluded, stressing that it is a &#8220;<strong>return home<\/strong>,&#8221;\u00a0and promising that <strong>Berlin will return to play an &#8220;active role&#8221;\u00a0<\/strong>in the Union, &#8220;in the interest of Europe, but also the interest of Germany.&#8221; To conclude his Brussels day, the Bundeskanzler then met with the President of the European Parliament, <strong>Roberta Metsola<\/strong>.
