The <strong>migration policies of the British executive<\/strong> led by Labour&#8217;s <strong>Keir Starmer<\/strong>, which include a <strong>tightening of entry into the UK<\/strong>, have come under the magnifying glass of numerous <strong>non-governmental organisations and law firms<\/strong>. According to them, the <strong>management of refugees<\/strong> and the practice of <strong>deporting them to Bulgaria<\/strong> could contravene the <strong>prohibition of torture and inhuman and degrading treatment<\/strong> enshrined in international conventions.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">According to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/publications\/returns-from-the-uk-and-illegal-working-activity-since-july-2024\/returns-from-the-uk-from-5-july-2024-to-22-march-2025\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">official statistics<\/a> provided by the London government, from July 2024 (when the <strong>Labour Party<\/strong> returned to power and <strong>Sir Keir Starmer<\/strong> took office in Downing Street) to March 2025,\u00a0<strong>more than 24 thousand individuals have been expelled from the UK<\/strong>, including voluntary and forced repatriations. Of these, <strong>nearly seven\u00a0thousand involved asylum seekers<\/strong>, a trend up 23 per cent from the previous 12 months. But even those who are interned in one of the overcrowded and unsanitary <strong>housing centres<\/strong> suffer &#8220;<strong>extreme hardship<\/strong>,&#8221; including inadequate food, poor sanitation, and limited access to health care.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">NNK has collected several testimonies of &#8220;<strong>physical and psychological abuse<\/strong>,&#8221; &#8220;<strong>deliberate disinformation<\/strong>&#8221; about the rights refugees should enjoy, and &#8220;<strong>threats of physical violence<\/strong>,&#8221; documenting a series of <strong>mistreatment<\/strong> that, he argues, &#8220;<strong>could amount to torture<\/strong>&#8221; under international standards and specifically the <strong>European Convention on Human Rights<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Article 3 of the ECHR <strong>explicitly prohibits torture and inhuman or degrading treatment<\/strong>, a prohibition that is allegedly systematically violated by Bulgaria (which is also legally bound by it as an EU member). Lawyers and NGOs accuse the authorities in Sofia of <strong>deliberately ignoring emergency calls<\/strong> and actively <strong>hindering efforts to provide relief<\/strong> to the youngsters.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">So, several British law firms are helping migrants and asylum seekers <strong>challenge in the courts deportation orders<\/strong> issued by government agencies, to nail Her Majesty&#8217;s Executive to its international obligations.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Officially, Downing Street considers\u00a0<strong>Bulgaria a safe country for repatriation<\/strong>, but recent surveys paint a decidedly different picture.
