{"id":426734,"date":"2025-05-14T15:48:58","date_gmt":"2025-05-14T13:48:58","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/2025\/05\/14\/frontiere-ue-calo-frontex-regno-sbarchi\/"},"modified":"2025-05-14T16:37:38","modified_gmt":"2025-05-14T14:37:38","slug":"eu-borders-27-per-cent-fewer-irregular-crossings-between-january-and-april","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/en\/2025\/05\/14\/eu-borders-27-per-cent-fewer-irregular-crossings-between-january-and-april\/","title":{"rendered":"EU borders, 27 per cent fewer irregular crossings between January and April"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Brussels <em>&#8211;<\/em> According to preliminary <a href=\"https:\/\/www.frontex.europa.eu\/media-centre\/news\/news-release\/eu-external-borders-irregular-crossings-down-a-quarter-in-first-4-months-of-2025-q0AUPi\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">data<\/a> published today (May 13) by <strong>Frontex<\/strong>, the European Border and Coast Guard Agency, some <strong>47,000 irregular crossings<\/strong> were recorded at the EU&#8217;s external borders in the first four months of 2025. The figure marks a <strong>27 per cent drop<\/strong> compared to 2024, a trend experienced on all major migration routes to the EU. The <strong>Balkan route<\/strong>, in particular, recorded the most significant drop in arrivals in January\u2013April.<\/p>\n<p>The <strong>Central Mediterranean<\/strong>, the one involving arrivals in Italy and still the number one route to\u00a0Europe for the influx of irregular migrants, recorded <strong>15.718 <\/strong>crossings (one-third of the total in the EU), marking a slight decrease of about 3 per cent, compared to the same period last year. More favourable weather conditions, however, favoured increased landings between March and April 2025.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"margin: 0px; padding: 0px;\">The\u00a0<strong>Eastern Mediterranean<\/strong>, the second largest route by volume, continues to experience a decrease, with about 12,228 detections, representing a\u00a0<strong>30 per cent drop\u00a0<\/strong>compared to the previous year.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-align: inherit;\">The<\/span><strong style=\"text-align: inherit;\">\u00a0Western Balkans<\/strong><span style=\"text-align: inherit;\">\u00a0route, which had been the most active in 2022 and 2023, in turn saw a sharp decrease:<\/span><strong style=\"text-align: inherit;\">\u00a03.093 crossings<\/strong><span style=\"text-align: inherit;\">\u00a0detected between January and April, a\u00a0<\/span><strong style=\"text-align: inherit;\">58 per cent<\/strong><span style=\"text-align: inherit;\">\u00a0drop year-on-year.<\/span>\u00a0In <strong>West Africa<\/strong>, detections were <b>10,424<\/b>, 34 per cent less than in 2024. Still, the route remains among the most frequently used, mainly by Malian, Senegalese, and Guinean nationals.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_426726\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\" style=\"width: 695px;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/image001.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-426726\" src=\"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/image001-300x211.png\" width=\"695\" height=\"489\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/image001-300x211.png 300w, https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/image001-1024x722.png 1024w, https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/image001-768x541.png 768w, https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/image001-750x528.png 750w, https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/image001-1140x803.png 1140w, https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/image001.png 1378w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 695px) 100vw, 695px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-426726\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Source: Frontex<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>More restrained are the numbers on the other routes: in the <strong>Western Mediterranean<\/strong> detections decreased by 10 per cent (3.547 crossings) while on the route through the <strong>Eastern Border<\/strong> of the EU, a decline of 31 per cent is observed (with about 1,800 crossings), in line with the gradual decline that occurred in 2024. T<span style=\"text-align: inherit;\">he number of\u00a0<\/span><strong style=\"text-align: inherit;\">deaths at sea<\/strong><span style=\"text-align: inherit;\">\u00a0across the Mediterranean is also declining. As\u00a0<\/span><a style=\"text-align: inherit;\" href=\"https:\/\/missingmigrants.iom.int\/region\/mediterranean?region_incident=All&amp;route=All&amp;month=All&amp;incident_date%5Bmin%5D=2025-01-01&amp;incident_date%5Bmax%5D=2025-03-31\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">reported by<\/a><span style=\"text-align: inherit;\">\u00a0the World Organisation for Migration, there were\u00a0<\/span><strong style=\"text-align: inherit;\">555<\/strong><span style=\"text-align: inherit;\">\u00a0between January and April, well below the 2,300 during the same period in 2024.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>With regard to nationalities, the most frequent countries of origin in the surveys conducted during this period were <strong>Bangladesh<\/strong>, <strong>Afghanistan<\/strong><b> <\/b>and <strong>Mali<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>A sharply contrasting figure concerns the irregular crossings of the <strong>English\u00a0Channel to the UK<\/strong>: while landings were down until March (11.200, 4 per cent less than in 2024), nearly 7,000 irregular migrants reached British shores in April, bringing the number of landings to about 18,120 (a <strong>5 per cent<\/strong> increase over the first four months of 2024).<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>According to Frontex, there are fewer and fewer arrivals in Europe, especially via the Balkan route.
