The <strong>Committee of the Regions (CoR)<\/strong>, meeting in plenary session at the EU Parliament in Brussels, lobbies\u00a0<strong>the European Commission<\/strong> and calls for <strong>more resources for social housing<\/strong>\u00a0to be released immediately, but also, structurally, through the revision of the multi-year EU budget.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">The message addressed today (May 14) to the EU executive by the CoR is clear: there is a need for Brussels to take charge of <strong>guaranteeing &#8220;quality affordable housing&#8221; for citizens<\/strong> by providing local levels of government with the necessary support. It is not enough to redirect <strong>cohesion funds<\/strong> for this purpose, say local governments, but <strong>new and abundant resources<\/strong> are needed to address what is a real social emergency throughout the Twenty-Seven. The priority is <strong>to increase\u00a0the supply of housing<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Chancelleries are encouraged &#8220;to <strong>reallocate unclaimed resources<\/strong> from their respective NRRPs toward financial instruments aimed at the &#8220;<strong>construction of affordable housing units in partnership with local authorities<\/strong>,&#8221; reads the opinion adopted by the CoR. Another goal is\u00a0<span style=\"margin: 0px; padding: 0px;\"><strong>to mobilise private funds<\/strong>\u00a0in cooperation with the\u00a0<strong>European Investment Bank (EIB)<\/strong>\u00a0and similar institutions at the national and regional levels<\/span>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Collboni presented his report to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/en\/2025\/03\/24\/tinagli-sustainable-and-affordable-housing-are-not-contradictory\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">special committee<\/a> of the EU Parliament dedicated precisely to <strong>Housing (HOUS)<\/strong>, chaired by Dem <strong>Irene Tinagli<\/strong>. Sala specified that a request to this effect has already been made to the Commission&#8217;s executive vice president in charge of Cohesion, <strong>Raffaele Fitto<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">The CoR opinion also talks about &#8220;addressing the <strong>existing bottlenecks in EU regulations<\/strong> that fuel <strong>speculation in the housing markets<\/strong>,&#8221; as well as calls for the establishment of a <strong>registry for transparency in the housing sector<\/strong>, and\u00a0regulation of rents at the local level.
