The choice, <a href=\"https:\/\/ec.europa.eu\/commission\/presscorner\/detail\/en\/mex_25_1213\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">announced<\/a> yesterday (May 14), represents a renewed EU commitment to supporting a lasting peace process on the island within the framework of the United Nations. Hahn will report directly to Commission President <strong>Ursula von der Leyen<\/strong> and will work closely with the Personal Envoy of the <strong>UN Secretary-General<\/strong> for Cyprus, Mar\u00eda \u00c1ngela Holgu\u00edn Cu\u00e9llar.<\/p>\n<p>Cyprus has been divided into a Turkish Cypriot north and a Greek Cypriot south since 1974 when Turkish forces invaded the island in response to a Greek-backed coup. <strong>Ankara does not recognize the Republic of Cyprus<\/strong>, an EU member country that is instead recognized internationally as the sole sovereign authority over the entire island. The Turkish Cypriot north is recognized only by Turkey. Cypriot President <strong>Nikos Christodoulides<\/strong>, in a post on X, <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/christodulides\/status\/1922614346661728669?s=46\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">welcomed<\/a> Hahn&#8217;s appointment, pointing out that it represents &#8220;tangible proof that <strong>the EU stands<\/strong> firmly and resolutely <strong>with Cyprus<\/strong> and its people.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The mandate\u00a0of the Special Envoy, which will have an initial term of one year, will be to facilitate dialogue between the parties involved, promote mutual confidence-building measures, and create the conditions for the resumption of the long-stalled inter-EU<strong> negotiations<\/strong>. Johannes Hahn brings with him a long institutional experience: he served as a European Commissioner <strong>for three consecutive terms<\/strong>, dealing with Regional Policy, Enlargement, and, most recently, Budget and Administration. In addition to his Commission posts, Hahn shares political orientation with von der Leyen:\u00a0they are both <strong>European People&#8217;s Party<\/strong> members.
