Brussels – The European Commission has appointed Johannes Hahn<\/strong>, a former European Commissioner, as Special Envoy for Cyprus<\/strong>. The choice, announced<\/a> yesterday (May 14), represents a renewed EU commitment to supporting a lasting peace process on the island within the framework of the United Nations. Hahn will report directly to Commission President Ursula von der Leyen<\/strong> and will work closely with the Personal Envoy of the UN Secretary-General<\/strong> for Cyprus, Mar\u00eda \u00c1ngela Holgu\u00edn Cu\u00e9llar.<\/p>\n

Cyprus has been divided into a Turkish Cypriot north and a Greek Cypriot south since 1974 when Turkish forces invaded the island in response to a Greek-backed coup. Ankara does not recognize the Republic of Cyprus<\/strong>, an EU member country that is instead recognized internationally as the sole sovereign authority over the entire island. The Turkish Cypriot north is recognized only by Turkey. Cypriot President Nikos Christodoulides<\/strong>, in a post on X, welcomed<\/a> Hahn’s appointment, pointing out that it represents “tangible proof that the EU stands<\/strong> firmly and resolutely with Cyprus<\/strong> and its people.”<\/p>\n

The mandate\u00a0of the Special Envoy, which will have an initial term of one year, will be to facilitate dialogue between the parties involved, promote mutual confidence-building measures, and create the conditions for the resumption of the long-stalled inter-EU negotiations<\/strong>. Johannes Hahn brings with him a long institutional experience: he served as a European Commissioner for three consecutive terms<\/strong>, dealing with Regional Policy, Enlargement, and, most recently, Budget and Administration. In addition to his Commission posts, Hahn shares political orientation with von der Leyen:\u00a0they are both European People’s Party<\/strong> members. Johannes Hahn was Minister of Science and Research in Austria and a member of the Viennese regional government.<\/p>\n
