However, as the host pointed out, blocking the small nation&#8217;s path to the twelve-star club is mainly an <strong>obstruction from Bulgaria<\/strong>, an issue that also seems to frustrate Costa.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">With a delay of over an\u00a0hour (due to an &#8220;extensive but very constructive&#8221; <strong>bilateral meeting<\/strong>), European Council President <strong>Ant\u00f3nio Costa<\/strong> and Macedonian Prime Minister <strong>Hristijan Mickoski<\/strong> held a brief joint press conference late this morning. The Portuguese socialist congratulated the conservative leader on the &#8220;<strong>excellent work accomplished<\/strong> by North Macedonia and your government on the <strong>reform agenda<\/strong>&#8221; and\u00a0the progress made so far, beginning with alignment with the Union&#8217;s <strong>Common Foreign and Security Policy (CFSP)<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Now, there is a need to &#8220;f<strong>orge\u00a0ahead with reforms<\/strong>&#8221; and take advantage of the opportunity to &#8220;conclude strategic investments,&#8221; Costa added, noting that Skopje and Brussels &#8220;are already getting closer,&#8221; as evidenced by the <strong>partnership on defense and security<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/en\/2024\/11\/20\/eu-signs-security-cooperation-agreements-with-albania-and-macedonia\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">signed in November<\/a>. The accession process &#8220;is a marathon, not a sprint,&#8221; Costa said. However, he continued, his country <strong>deserves to be treated &#8220;with dignity,&#8221;<\/strong>\u00a0both as a candidate and, eventually, as an EU member. &#8220;<strong>We have a problem with Bulgaria, and we want to solve it<\/strong>, but <strong>it&#8217;s a two-lane road<\/strong>,&#8221; he said, arguing that only one side is really working to make progress.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">&#8220;<strong>We have done a lot to join the EU<\/strong>,&#8221; Mickoski reiterated, referring to the various changes made over the years to the country&#8217;s Constitution, flag, and\u00a0name, adding that he is willing &#8220;to sit at the table, <strong>discuss and find a solution<\/strong>.&#8221; However, for now, he says, Sofia does not share a<strong> similar willingness<\/strong>. &#8220;The integration process should be driven by values and not bilateral negotiations,&#8221; he concluded, arguing that he cannot &#8220;amend the Constitution for the umpteenth time knowing that <strong>one member state is questioning our national identity<\/strong>.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><strong>Costa offered his support<\/strong>. &#8220;This process has taken too long; <strong>now is the time for results<\/strong>,&#8221; he agreed, stressing that both Macedonia and Bulgaria must implement the contents of the <strong>agreement reached in July 2022<\/strong>. In the past few days, he made four visits to as many countries in the region: Tuesday to Serbia (where <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/en\/2025\/05\/13\/costa-meets-vucic-but-without-condemning-belgrades-drift-toward-moscow\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">he met<\/a> President <strong>Aleksandar Vu\u010di\u0107<\/strong>, fresh from a trip to <strong>Vladimir Putin<\/strong>&#8216;s court) and <strong>Bosnia-Herzegovina;<\/strong> yesterday he was in\u00a0Montenegro (to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/en\/2025\/05\/14\/costa-in-montenegro-impressive-progress-toward-accession\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">congratulate<\/a> Podgorica&#8217;s &#8220;impressive&#8221; progress toward accession) and\u00a0Pristina, the capital of <strong>Kosovo<\/strong> (which, to date, five out of 27 member states do not recognize yet).<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Costa&#8217;s final destination is <strong>Tirana,<\/strong> where he is heading during these hours. The former Portuguese premier will meet tomorrow (May 16) with leaders of some 40 countries on the Old Continent at the<a href=\"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/en\/2025\/05\/08\/in-tirana-the-sixth-summit-of-the-european-political-community\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> sixth summit <\/a>of the <strong>European Political Community<\/strong> to discuss <strong>security, competitiveness, migration, and democracy<\/strong>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>At the end of his Balkan tour, the president of the European Council visited Skopje to congratulate the prime minister on progress toward accession.
