{"id":426984,"date":"2025-05-16T16:13:00","date_gmt":"2025-05-16T14:13:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/2025\/05\/16\/elezioni-presidenziali-polonia-tusk-ue\/"},"modified":"2025-05-16T17:51:55","modified_gmt":"2025-05-16T15:51:55","slug":"polands-presidential-election-a-crucial-test-for-tusks-pro-european-government","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/en\/2025\/05\/16\/polands-presidential-election-a-crucial-test-for-tusks-pro-european-government\/","title":{"rendered":"Poland&#8217;s presidential election a crucial test for Tusk&#8217;s pro-European government"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"text-align: inherit;\">Brussels &#8211; A year and a half after Donald Tusk<\/span><a style=\"text-align: inherit;\" href=\"http:\/\/A%20year%20and%20a%20half%20after%20Donald%20Tusk%20returned%20to%20lead%20the%20government,%20Poland%20will%20go%20to%20the%20polls%20on%20Sunday%2018%20May%20to%20elect%20a%20new%20president%20to%20succeed%20the%20conservative%20Andrzej%20Duda.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u00a0returned\u00a0<\/a><span style=\"text-align: inherit;\">to lead the government,\u00a0<\/span><strong style=\"text-align: inherit;\">Poland will go to the polls on Sunday, 18 May<\/strong><span style=\"text-align: inherit;\">,\u00a0to elect a new president to succeed the conservative Andrzej Duda.<\/span>\u00a0On one side is the capital&#8217;s mayor, <strong>Rafal Trzaskowski<\/strong>, a pro-European supported by the prime minister&#8217;s Civic Coalition; on the other\u00a0is the historian and Trump admirer <strong>Karol Nawrocki<\/strong>, supported by the nationalists of Law and Justice (PiS). The dangerous outsider is <strong>Slawomir Mentzen<\/strong>, a multimillionaire businessman and member of the far-right Confederation party.<\/p>\n<p>With only a few hours to go before election silence begins,\u00a0<strong>the favourite is Trzaskowski<\/strong>\u2014polls put him at 32 per cent, followed by Nawrocki at 23 per cent and Mentzen at 14 per cent. Behind them are ten other minor candidates, including Adrian Zandberg of the left-wing Razem (Together) party, Szymon Holownia of the centre-right Poland 2025 party, and Magdalena Biejat of the New Left (Nowa Lewica), the left wing of Tusk&#8217;s governing coalition. Given by polls between 5 and 8 per cent, their voters could play a decisive role in the event of a runoff between the two top-ranked candidates.<\/p>\n<p>In fact, the second round, possibly\u00a0<strong>scheduled for June 1<\/strong>, appears almost a foregone conclusion. At stake, barring a Mentzen exploit, will be the two parties that have dominated the country&#8217;s political scene for the past two decades\u00a0and who\u00a0<strong>currently hold the posts of head of government and head of state<\/strong>. And it is already a clear indication\u00a0<span style=\"margin: 0px; padding: 0px;\">of<strong>\u00a0what<\/strong><\/span><strong>\u00a0might happen in the likely runoff<\/strong>:\u00a0on one side, the conservative electorate united in support of\u00a0 Nawrocki or\u00a0Mentzen and on the other, the governing coalition candidate trying to gain\u00a0support from\u00a0the right. At the same time, <strong>Trzaskowski risks alienating a part\u00a0of the progressive electorate<\/strong> that was instrumental in Tusk&#8217;s victory only 18 months ago, particularly women and young people.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0px;\">\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0px;\">On the other hand, Nawrocki&#8217;s election campaign focused on the slogan &#8220;Poland first, Poles first.&#8221; Despite his pledge to maintain support for Ukraine against the Russian invasion, the former director of the World War II Museum in Gdansk has lashed out against the benefits granted to refugees and against foreigners and migrants in general: <strong>he wants Warsaw&#8217;s withdrawal from the EU Pact on Migration and Asylum<\/strong> (on closer inspection, Tusk himself recently<a href=\"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/en\/2024\/10\/14\/polish-pm-tusk-wants-to-suspend-right-to-asylum\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> suspended<\/a> the right to asylum because of the &#8220;hybrid threat&#8221; from Belarus), as well as the abolition of the Green Deal. In line with PiS&#8217;s positions, he is strongly critical of granting more rights to the LGBTIQ+ community. Mentzen is similarly against abortion and migrants, but decidedly more Eurosceptic. Also, in Strasbourg, the Council of Europe, in early April, had raised <strong>serious concerns about the integrity and security of the electoral process<\/strong>.
