Starting with deepening collaboration on crucial issues such as the use of <strong>critical raw materials<\/strong>, <strong>migration<\/strong>, and <strong>investment<\/strong>, but also countering <strong>disinformation from the Kremlin<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span style=\"text-align: inherit\">&#8220;<\/span><strong style=\"text-align: inherit\">Africa and Europe are each other&#8217;s sister continents<\/strong><span style=\"text-align: inherit\">&#8220;: with these words,&nbsp;<\/span><strong style=\"text-align: inherit\">Kaja Kallas<\/strong><span style=\"text-align: inherit\">&nbsp;opened the proceedings of the&nbsp;<\/span><strong style=\"text-align: inherit\">third EU-AU Foreign Ministerial<\/strong><span style=\"text-align: inherit\">&nbsp;held today (21 May) in Brussels in preparation for the&nbsp;<\/span><strong style=\"text-align: inherit\">next high-level summit<\/strong><span style=\"text-align: inherit\">, the seventh, scheduled for this year.<\/span>&nbsp;The year 2025 also marks the <strong>25th anniversary<\/strong> of the dialogue format between the two continental organisations, inaugurated in Cairo in 2000.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">For the twelve-star diplomacy chief, there are &#8220;<strong>shared interests but also shared challenges<\/strong>&#8221; for the countries on both sides of the Mediterranean on a number of crucial issues. &#8220;The challenges are immense, but so are <strong>our shared resources<\/strong>,&#8221; she stressed, curiously mentioning only African ones: &#8220;The fastest growing population on the planet, immense <strong>entrepreneurial potential<\/strong>, an <strong>abundance of resources and critical raw materials<\/strong> needed for green and digital transitions.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Co-chairing today&#8217;s meeting was <strong>T\u00e9te Ant\u00f3nio<\/strong>, the Angolan foreign minister heading the AU Executive Council. On this specific issue, he was keen to point out that &#8220;<strong>projects for the processing of raw materials must take place on the ground in Africa&#8221;<\/strong> and not elsewhere to avoid &#8220;<strong>exporting the added value<\/strong>, i.e. work, welfare, development, and knowledge.&#8221; In other words, not to repeat the <strong>predatory dynamics of extractive colonialism<\/strong> that European states have practised for centuries on the continent.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-o-mail-quote-node=\"1\" data-o-mail-quote=\"1\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">Africa and Europe are partners of choice.<br \/>\nWe are working together for peace, security, and sustainable growth.<\/p>\n<p>Today, we are gathering with foreign ministers and members of the African Union \u2014 strengthening our partnership and marking 25 years since the first EU-Africa Summit. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/E4IiFarFmK\">pic.twitter.com\/E4IiFarFmK<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&#8211; Kaja Kallas (@kajakallas) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/kajakallas\/status\/1925124650876473646?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">May 21, 2025<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p class=\"p1\">&#8220;Since the last EU-AU summit, i.e. the sixth (dating back to mid-February 2022), &#8220;<strong>the world has changed dramatically<\/strong>,&#8221; Kallas noted. &#8220;War has returned to Europe, instability is growing in parts of Africa and the Middle East, we are witnessing an increase in disinformation and foreign interference in our internal affairs, unprecedented instability in world markets and threats to multilateralism and the rules-based international order.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Ant\u00f3nio called for &#8220;innovative <strong>solutions&#8221;<\/strong> to jointly respond to epochal challenges that &#8220;do not stop at geographical borders&#8221;\u2014in the minister&#8217;s list, climate change, economic transformation, health, peace and security, and migration\u2014and offer &#8220;<strong>tangible benefits for our peoples on both continents<\/strong>.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">The key priorities of EU-AU relations include <strong>investment and trade<\/strong> between the two single markets, the exploitation of <strong>critical raw materials<\/strong>, cooperation on <strong>security<\/strong>, the development of <strong>artificial intelligence<\/strong> and robust <strong>digital infrastructure<\/strong>, the <strong>blue economy<\/strong>, <strong>mobility<\/strong> (including the key chapter of <strong>management of migration flows<\/strong>), <strong>connectivity<\/strong> and <strong>regional integration<\/strong> as well as the challenges of <strong>global governance<\/strong> (starting with the preservation of multilateralism in an era of military conflicts and trade wars).<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">On the migration dossier, Ant\u00f3nio emphasised that the movement of people &#8220;is not a problem in itself&#8221; and can indeed &#8220;<strong>bring benefits that have a<\/strong> <strong>positive<\/strong> impact&#8221; on host countries, but &#8220;the problem lies in &#8216;how&#8217; this phenomenon develops&#8221;. That is, ways must be found to ensure <strong>safe routes for legal migration<\/strong>, he says, and the economic development of the African continent must be supported.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Kallas also agreed: &#8220;<strong>It is also in our interest that there is&nbsp;prosperity in Africa<\/strong>, that there are jobs in Africa,&#8217; she argued&nbsp;in front of journalists, so that &#8220;<strong>there is no migratory pressure<\/strong>&#8221; on European shores. And she admitted that &#8220;<strong>it is increasingly difficult<\/strong>&#8221; to succeed in &#8220;<strong>combating<\/strong> <strong>disinformation and foreign malign influence<\/strong>&#8220;, despite <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/en\/2025\/03\/19\/the-galaxy-of-foreign-interference-operations-in-brussels-crosshairs\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the efforts so far<\/a>, because &#8220;we live in the information age&#8221; in which &#8220;lies travel fast and expand rapidly.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">The EU and its member states are the <strong>first trading partner<\/strong>, the <strong>first foreign investor<\/strong> (\u20ac309 billion in 2022) and the <strong>main donor of development and humanitarian aid<\/strong>.
