Brussels. — “Oops, we were wrong.\u00a0We opened a procedure against the wrong person.” Once again, the Belgian judiciary is leaving some doubts about its efficiency after withdrawing the request for authorization to proceed against Forza Italia MEP Giusi Princi, which was made official yesterday. Perhaps magistrates realized there was a problem with the investigation since Princi, on the day they claimed she had met with Huawei officials in Brussels, was\u00a0actually\u00a0in Reggio Calabria<\/a> (as many local newspapers reported).<\/span><\/p>\n

“I am pleased to learn of\u00a0the notification from the Belgian Public Prosecutor’s Office concerning the withdrawal of the request to waive the parliamentary immunity concerning\u00a0myself l<\/strong>ess than 24 hours after my appeal to the competent authorities,” Princi said in a note today.<\/span><\/p>\n

The MEP explains that “according to today’s letter from the Belgian Public Prosecutor’s Office addressed to the President of the European Parliament, Roberta Metsola, the <\/b>investigating judge has received new elements from the federal police that justify the outright withdrawal of the request mentioned above to lift parliamentary immunity.”<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

Princi says she is “relieved by the request for urgent revocation confirming my total extraneousness to the so-called Huaweigate affair, although I am\u00a0still shaken by having been implicated based on\u00a0objectively non-existent elements”. <\/span><\/p>\n

“In these hours of understandable nervousness and dismay in the face of the original request by the Public Prosecutor’s Office, I would like to thank my party colleagues for their affection and support, with particular reference to Deputy Premier Antonio Tajani,” concluded the Italian MEP.<\/span><\/p>\n
