Brussels – Oops! He did it again<\/i>. Donald Trump<\/strong> has dropped yet another explosive announcement, claiming he wants to introduce 50 per cent tariffs<\/strong>\u00a0on goods entering the United\u00a0States from the Twenty-Seven. The EU Commission<\/strong>, which is responsible for trade matters, refused to comment<\/strong> immediately on the US President’s move, waiting for direct talks<\/strong> with representatives from Washington.<\/p>\n

The erratic White House tenant took the whole world by surprise early this afternoon (23 May) by posting on his personal social network, Truth<\/i>, the announcement: “Our discussions with them are going nowhere!<\/strong>\u00a0Therefore, I am recommending a 50 per cent direct tariff on the European Union, starting 1 June 2025<\/strong>.” Indiscriminate, on all products, unless they are “constructed or manufactured in the United States.” This is double<\/b>\u00a0the amount he had set\u2014and then suspended for 90 days\u2014at the beginning of April.<\/p>\n

The move, which fell on Brussels like a bolt from the\u2014partially overcast\u2014blue<\/strong>, risks acting as a catalyst for an escalation <\/i><\/strong>of the trade war<\/strong> that, on both sides of the Atlantic, some are desperately trying to defuse<\/strong> before it is too late. But it is a race against time.<\/p>\n

“The European Union<\/strong>, which was formed for the primary purpose of gaining an advantage over the United States in trade matters, has been very difficult to deal with<\/strong>,” Trump added. According to him, the “powerful trade barriers, VAT taxes, ridiculous corporate sanctions, non-monetary trade barriers, currency manipulations, unfair and unjustified lawsuits against American companies and more”, he denounced, “have led to a trade deficit<\/strong> with the United States of over $250 million<\/strong> per year, a number which is totally unacceptable.<\/strong>”<\/p>\n

At the Berlaymont, everyone remains tight-lipped<\/strong>, probably dismayed at the unpredictability of the tycoon. “A telephone call will take place this afternoon<\/strong>” between Trade Commissioner\u00a0Maro\u0161 \u0160ef\u010dovi\u010d<\/strong> and his US counterpart, Ambassador\u00a0Jamieson Greer<\/strong>, the EU executive’s spokespersons confirmed to journalists.<\/span>\u00a0They point out laconically: “This call was planned already before President Trump’s announcement<\/strong>.” The interview is scheduled for 5.30 p.m., and until then, no “announcements or comments” are to be expected from the College.<\/p>\n

In the meantime, the Old Continent’s stock exchanges<\/strong> collapse. Is the Donald<\/i>‘s flight forward the final tombstone on Brussels’ negotiating strategy<\/strong>?\u00a0For now, the soft line taken by the Commission<\/a> (which has trade competence in the EU) does not seem to have yielded results<\/strong>, while threats from Washington are undermining<\/a> growth in the Eurozone. Nor does the charm offensive<\/em> of Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni<\/strong>, who has long sought to position herself as a bridge-builder to maintain transatlantic unity<\/strong>, seem to have borne fruit.<\/p>\n

Currently, goods imported to the US from the EU are subject to a general 10 per cent tax<\/strong> (25 per cent for steel, aluminium and car parts), pending the ‘reciprocal duties<\/strong>‘ at 25 per cent threatened by Trump last month<\/a>, which were mothballed<\/strong> until mid-July.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"

The US President is not letting up, in fact he is doubling down on the 25 per cent tariffs suspended until July. In less than ten days, twelve-star goods will face a tariff of half their nominal value.
