The European Union is betting on the new leadership and, in a sign of good faith, lifted the sanctions imposed in the past and that were in force for all these years. At the last EU Foreign Affairs Council, the foreign ministers of the EU Member States decided to remove 24 entities subject to the freezing of funds and economic resources from the European blacklist. Many of these entities are banks, including the Central Bank of Syria, or companies operating in key sectors for Syria’s economic recovery.

The choice finds its logic in the need to create the conditions to make the country a safe and stable place to return to, and economic revival, in this sense, is a key element in convincing Syrian refugees to return. From the EU, however, there is no blank cheque: the EU Council says it is “ready to introduce new restrictive measures” against those who violate human rights and fuel instability in Syria. Brunner reiterated a concept: “EU support and suspension of sanctions are commensurate with developments in the country.“

Brunner: “Creating the conditions for the safe, voluntary, and dignified return of refugees.” Lifting sanctions on Syria a key element

[25707
27047,25937,26205,31368,25754,29257,29147,31367,27780,29958
post-428357","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-world-politics","tag-eu-en","tag-frontex-en-2","tag-immigration-en-2","tag-magnus-brown-and","tag-migration-en","tag-refugee-en","tag-rimpatri-en","tag-returns","tag-sanctions-en-2","tag-syria-en
["GET
