In his first face-to-face meeting with the US president, the German chancellor was <strong>deferential and accommodating so as not to irritate his counterpart<\/strong>, avoiding discussing in front of the cameras the most contentious issues in relations between Berlin and Washington. From the meeting, however, he brought home no particular concessions.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">The procession of world leaders to the court of <strong>Donald Trump<\/strong> continues. Yesterday (June 5) was the turn of the German Chancellor, who presented the <i>tycoon<\/i> with a special gift: a copy of his grandfather&#8217;s <strong>birth certificate<\/strong> framed in gold. <strong>Friedrich Trump<\/strong> was born in 1869 in Kallstadt, a village in what is now the <i>L\u00e4nd<\/i> of the Palatinate, which at the time was part of Bavaria, and later emigrated to the United States.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">The <i>Bundeskanzler<\/i> showed that he had studied his interlocutor well. With <strong>Operation <i>Overlord<\/i><\/strong>, on June 6, 1944, the Allies arrived on the Atlantic coast of France, then under Nazi occupation, while other Western armies were moving up\u00a0from Sicily and the Soviets were marching from the east on Berlin.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">&#8220;<strong>This was not a pleasant day for you<\/strong>,&#8221; Trump retorted, alluding to the fact that <i>D-Day<\/i> marked the beginning of the end for <strong>Adolf Hitler<\/strong>. &#8220;In the long term, Mr President, this was the <strong>liberation of my country from the Nazi dictatorship<\/strong>,&#8221; Merz replied, adding that &#8220;we know what we owe you.&#8221; The chancellor then took the opportunity to draw a parallel between the invasion of Europe by the Third Reich<i> <\/i>and that of Ukraine by <strong>Vladimir Putin<\/strong> Russia. The United States, he noted, is &#8220;again in a very strong <strong>position to do something to end this war<\/strong>.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">&#8220;<strong>We are trying to put more pressure on Russia;<\/strong> we should talk about it,&#8221; Merz remarked. However, during the war in Ukraine, he failed to secure any concessions for the White House occupants. On the contrary, and much to the detriment of his own promises to quickly end the conflict, Trump suggested that it might be appropriate to let\u00a0<strong>Moscow and Kyiv &#8220;continue to fight for a while<\/strong>,&#8221; likening the two belligerents to <strong>little quarrelsome children who are hard to separate<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0px;\">However, the US administration <strong>will not impose new sanctions on the Kremlin<\/strong>, at least for now. On the first point, Merz secured\u00a0from Trump the <strong>commitment not to withdraw any of the 40,000 US military personnel stationed in Germany<\/strong>. The fear of disengagement of Uncle Sam from the Old Continent is real among the European chancelleries, which are preparing to give the green light to Washington&#8217;s request to <strong>significantly increase defense spending under NATO<\/strong>,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/en\/2025\/06\/05\/nato-towards-consensus-on-new-military-expenditure-target-of-5-per-cent-of-gdp\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> raising the bar<\/a> from 2 to 5 percent of GDP.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">As for tariffs, the US president is confident that &#8220;a <strong>good trade agreement&#8221;<\/strong> with Brussels is within reach. Currently, Washington has imposed <strong>tariffs of 10 percent on all European imports<\/strong>,\u00a025 percent on cars (a <strong>catastrophe for the German economy for which the<\/strong>\u00a0automotive sector is a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/en\/2025\/06\/03\/germanys-automotive-industry-crisis-deepens-uncertainty-over-us-duties-weighs-heavily\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">fundamental pillar<\/a>), and 50 percent<br \/>\non steel and aluminium.\u00a0A few days ago, Trump made yet <a href=\"http:\/\/Giorni%20fa,%20Trump%20ha%20compiuto%20l%E2%80%99ennesima%20giravolta%20sospendendo%20fino%20al%209%20luglio%20l%E2%80%99attivazione%20di%20un%E2%80%99ulteriore%20dazio%20del%2050%20per%20cento%20sugli%20import%20a%20dodici%20stelle.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">another U-turn<\/a> by suspending until July 9 the activation of an <strong>additional 50 percent tariff<\/strong>\u00a0on EU imports.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Finally, <strong>Merz avoided specific\u00a0topics<\/strong>, such as the heavy meddling by prominent members of the Trump administration in German domestic politics &#8211; with Vice-President <strong>JD Vance<\/strong> and the tycoon&#8217;s now former strongman, <strong>Elon <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/en\/2025\/01\/10\/musk-insists-only-the-afd-can-save-germany-livestream-on-x-with-weidel-watched-by-just-200000-viewers\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Musk<\/a><\/strong>, who openly supported the ultra-right of <strong><em>Alternative f\u00fcr Deutschland<\/em> (AfD)<\/strong> &#8211; or Berlin and Washington&#8217;s relations with the Israeli PM, <strong>Benjamin Netanyahu<\/strong>, but also the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/en\/2025\/02\/07\/tariffs-climate-international-law-trump-shapes-the-european-parliaments-agenda\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">White House&#8217;s troubled relationship with the International Criminal Court<\/a>.
