The times call to rethink everything that has been. Once again, the European Commission is burying the project at the heart of the Union. The Commissioner for Defense, the Lithuanian <strong>Andrius Kubilius<\/strong>, reiterates this once more: &#8220;<strong>So we need to\u00a0put aside our peacetime glasses<\/strong>,&#8221; he tells\u00a0the audience at the<a href=\"https:\/\/ebsummits.eu\/our-summits\/european-defence-security\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> European Security and Defense Summit<\/a>. &#8220;<strong>We must be ready for defense, in all the different domains<\/strong>: in industrial capacity, in\u00a0readiness of public finances to pay for what is needed, and there should\u00a0be no obstacles for cooperation between the EU and NATO,&#8221; he offers as a recipe.<\/p>\n<p>There is the intention to work with companies, to which Kubilius assures that for the von der Leyen team, the imperative is &#8220;European spending&#8221; to invest more and more in &#8220;joint procurement.&#8221; The key to Europe&#8217;s immediate future, Kubilius insists, is all in the industrial capacity: &#8220;If we want Peace in Europe (Pax Europaea), we need to be ready to be independent,&#8221;\u00a0which\u00a0applies especially to the production side. &#8220;Pax Europaea (Peace in Europe) is our strategic responsibility. <strong>Pax Europaea is impossible without our independent defense readiness<\/strong>,&#8221; he says.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-embedded-content\" data-secret=\"6kFPWT6ueP\"><p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/2025\/05\/27\/consiglio-ue-fondo-safe-difesa-parlamento\/\">Difesa, via libera definitivo al fondo Safe. Even if peace is\u00a0concluded in Ukraine, Putin will continue to mobilize Russia&#8217;s war economy.\u00a0This time &#8211; against the EU.&#8221;\u00a0Moreover, &#8220;t<strong>he forthcoming American withdrawal from Europe is a new reality. <\/strong>This does not mean American withdrawal from NATO. Our readiness for defense is not sufficient<strong>.&#8221;<\/strong>\u00a0According to Kubilius, &#8220;This perfect storm does not mean we cannot make bold\u00a0decisions.&#8221;\u00a0The first is a paradigm shift involving an\u00a0EU geared for war.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0px;\">\n<h4 id='the-industrial-strategy-drones-space-and-military-mobility'  id=\"boomdevs_2\">The industrial strategy: drones, space, and military mobility<\/h4>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0px;\">The European strategy already exists. In\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/en\/2025\/03\/14\/white-paper-on-defense-joint-eu-procurement-and-industrial-integration-with-ukraine\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the White Paper<\/a>,\u00a0the European Commission charts the course. However,\u00a0Kubilius urges industry to be ready, as he reminds business representatives in the sector that everything passes through the EU executive&#8217;s agenda: conventional weapons and then drones: &#8220;<strong>Today 80% of targets in Ukraine are destroyed by drones. Every two\u00a0months, there is a need for radical innovation of the drones in operation<\/strong>.&#8221; Hence, the consideration: &#8220;What kind of war do we need to be ready to fight? Our actions in implementing the White Paper very much depend on an answer to this question.&#8221; In saying this, Kubilius implies that all the\u00a0new attention is focused\u00a0on\u00a0this factor, and it is no coincidence that\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/en\/2024\/03\/19\/defense-leaders-in-brussels-seek-eib-reform-for-more-funding\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the European Investment Bank has been called upon to support dual-use civil-military technology,<\/a> of which drones are an expression.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-embedded-content\" data-secret=\"9e3paxoS1V\"><p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/2024\/01\/23\/copernicus-per-difesa-ue-industria\/\">Copernicus per la difesa, UE e industria europea avviano il ragionamento<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><iframe class=\"wp-embedded-content\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts\" security=\"restricted\" style=\"position: absolute; visibility: hidden;\" title=\"&#8220;Copernicus per la difesa, UE e industria europea avviano il ragionamento&#8221; &#8212; Eunews\" src=\"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/2024\/01\/23\/copernicus-per-difesa-ue-industria\/embed\/#?secret=jvcdEMPAy7#?secret=9e3paxoS1V\" data-secret=\"9e3paxoS1V\" width=\"500\" height=\"282\" frameborder=\"0\" marginwidth=\"0\" marginheight=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0px;\">Then, there is also the issue of Space. &#8220;Today, defense readiness is impossible without space readiness,&#8221; Kubilius continues. &#8220;We must develop an industrial production capacity, including missiles and satellites.&#8221; In this regard,\u00a0&#8220;we are working with the European Space Agency (ESA) on a new defense satellite navigation system. It is needed for intelligence data.&#8221;\u00a0However, in this respect,\u00a0 &#8216;we must strengthen\u00a0our tracking capabilities.&#8221; We cannot turn away: &#8220;Space is a new frontier. Materially and politically, we need to be in Space.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0px;\">Finally, &#8220;<span lang=\"en-EN\">we must invest in military mobility,&#8221; the Defense Commissioner emphasizes: &#8220;We can&#8217;t move tanks or artillery to defend the border if the bridges or roads are too weak to carry them, or tunnels too small.&#8221; For this, and all that is at stake, Kubilius turns\u00a0to businesses, those that are involved and those that are not yet but potentially so:\u00a0&#8220;<\/span><strong>So, those companies, which still are not engaged in defense and space business, should think about that.&#8221;<\/strong> It is a clear invitation to change the economy: the Europe of peace is being converted into the Europe of war.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Defense Commissioner at the European Defense Summit sounds the alarm: &#8220;We are facing a perfect storm.
