The deal\u00a0allows the US military to operate from these sites, store military equipment, conduct maintenance, exercises, and station personnel. The US forces will also have <strong>autonomous legal jurisdiction<\/strong> over their own military, relieving them from compliance with Danish law in the first degree.<\/p>\n<p>The agreement, signed in December 2023 under <strong>Joe Biden<\/strong>&#8216;s administration but finalized after <strong>Donald Trump<\/strong> returned to the White House, has drawn criticism from a section of the public and some political forces, particularly for\u00a0<strong>fears<\/strong>\u00a0of losing sovereignty and potential conflict with Danish constitutional principles. Among the <strong>votes against<\/strong> were those of the Red-Green Alliance (Enhedslisten), the environmentalists of Alternativet, and the independent MEP <strong>Theresa Scavenius<\/strong>, who <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aa.com.tr\/en\/americas\/denmark-approves-us-military-base-agreement-amid-tensions-over-greenland\/3594320\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">spoke<\/a>\u00a0of a &#8220;lack of public oversight&#8221; and an overly opaque decision-making process. Justice Minister <strong>Peter Hummelgaard<\/strong> stated that Danish control &#8220;remains firm&#8221; even in areas affected by the arrangement. Prime Minister <strong>Mette Frederiksen<\/strong> defended the choice as necessary in the current context: &#8220;<strong>The problem is not an excessive American presence in Europe<\/strong>, but the risk of the United States disengaging or stopping donations to Ukraine.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0px;\">The agreement&#8217;s ratification comes at a <strong>sensitive moment<\/strong> in bilateral relations between Copenhagen and Washington. President Trump&#8217;s recent statements about <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/en\/2025\/01\/08\/trumps-threats-over-greenland-canada-and-panama\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">his wish<\/a>\u00a0to &#8220;get&#8221; <strong>Greenland<\/strong>\u00a0&#8220;one way or the other&#8221; have rekindled tensions that have never subsided. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/world\/greenland-spying-us-intelligence-809c4ef2\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">According to<\/a> the Wall Street Journal,\u00a0US <strong>intelligence<\/strong> has reportedly been instructed to monitor Greenland&#8217;s independence movements and gauge local sentiment on resource extraction, generating a harsh diplomatic response from Frederiksen: &#8220;<strong>You don&#8217;t spy on an ally<\/strong>,&#8221; he declared.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0px;\">Further complicating the picture are the statements of US Vice-President <strong>JD Vance<\/strong>, who, during a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/en\/2025\/03\/26\/greenland-vance-to-visit-the-us-base-frederiksen-unacceptable-pressure\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">visit<\/a>\u00a0to the US space base in Pituffik on March 26, called on Greenland to &#8220;cut ties with Denmark&#8221;\u00a0to align with Washington.\u00a0This scenario makes it even more strategic for the Danish government to <strong>keep the channel open with the United States.<\/strong> Despite the concerns expressed by various political and academic voices, Copenhagen thus sees the\u00a0agreement as a means to manage an increasingly complex relationship with NATO&#8217;s main military ally in a more stable manner.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Despite growing tensions over Greenland and sovereignty, the Danish Parliament approved the understanding with Washington by a large majority.
