However, at the very end of the meeting, while High Representative <strong>Kaja Kallas<\/strong> failed to condemn Washington and Tel Aviv&#8217;s military actions in the Middle East, the <strong>first direct retaliation against the US bases in Qatar and Iraq<\/strong>\u00a0was\u00a0reportedly being launched from Tehran, in what could be the <strong>escalation capable of extending the conflict to the entire region<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Besides the <strong>revision of the EU-Israel association agreement<\/strong>, the main topic of discussion at the <strong>Foreign Affairs Council<\/strong> in Brussels today (23 June) was the <strong>escalation of the Middle East crisis<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/en\/2025\/06\/13\/israel-strikes-iran-they-are-building-the-bomb-brussels-does-not-condemn-israel-urges-de-escalation\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">unleashed by the Jewish state<\/a> with the attack on 13 June. The attacks, claimed by the Islamic Republic as &#8220;a powerful and successful response of the Iranian armed forces to American aggression,&#8221; constitute a further <strong>grave leap forward<\/strong> in the conflict between Tel Aviv and Washington on the one hand and Tehran on the other, which now directly involves US assets in the region and thus has the potential to <strong>start a spiral of uncontrollable violence<\/strong>. President <strong>Donald Trump<\/strong> is currently in the White House\u00a0<em>situation room.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0px;\">\n<p class=\"p1\">Yet Brussels fails to <strong>call either Washington or Tel Aviv to their responsibilities,\u00a0<\/strong>not even to name them. &#8220;The <strong>new war is a dangerous development, and recent military actions heightened tensions<\/strong>,&#8221; <strong>Kaja Kallas<\/strong> remarked at the end of the meeting (which ended before the Iranian attacks against US bases started), noting that &#8220;<strong>military actions are always fraught with risks and uncertainties. What matters now is minimizing the risk of further escalation.<\/strong>&#8220;<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">The head of EU diplomacy was, however, careful not to <strong>condemn those who have been conducting those actions for the past ten days<\/strong>, literally putting the Middle East on fire. Therefore, she assures that <strong>&#8220;we certainly stay in touch&#8221; with the leadership of the Islamic Republic<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">For the time being, the <strong>negotiating efforts of European diplomacy<\/strong> have not yielded any results. On 20 June, France, Germany, the UK, and the EU &#8211; the European members of the <strong><i>Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action<\/i> (JCPOA)<\/strong>, Tehran&#8217;s 2015 nuclear deal, moribund since Trump withdrew the US in 2018 &#8211;<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/en\/2025\/06\/20\/geneva-european-diplomacy-tries-to-save-the-iran-nuclear-deal\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">met in Geneva<\/a>\u00a0with Iran&#8217;s foreign minister, <strong>Abbas Araghchi<\/strong>, to try to <strong>restart dialogue over the ayatollahs&#8217; atomic ambitions<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">However, that <strong>timid diplomatic initiative<\/strong> (the only one ever attempted since the beginning of the war) <strong>was shattered by the\u00a0rain of anti-bunker bombs<\/strong> that the Pentagon dropped on the <strong>Fordo<\/strong>, <strong>Natanz,<\/strong> and <strong>Isfahan<\/strong> facilities in the following hours. At the end of their talks, the Kremlin&#8217;s occupant reaffirmed Russia&#8217;s <strong>support for its Middle Eastern ally<\/strong>, noting that the US&#8217;s &#8220;<strong>absolutely unprovoked aggression<\/strong>&#8221; against Iran &#8220;<strong>has no basis or justification<\/strong>&#8221; and lamenting the lack of warning from the US administration.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Earlier, NATO chief <strong>Mark Rutte <\/strong>gave a diametrally opposed view. On the eve of the <strong>critical summit in The Hague<\/strong>, where the Alliance members gave<a href=\"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/en\/2025\/06\/05\/nato-towards-consensus-on-new-military-expenditure-target-of-5-per-cent-of-gdp\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u00a0the green light<\/a> to the <strong>increase in military spending to 5 percent of GDP<\/strong> (with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/en\/2025\/06\/23\/nato-agrees-to-raise-military-spending-to-5-percent-of-gdp-by-2035-spain-secures-waiver\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the only exception, perhaps,<\/a>\u00a0Spain&#8217;s <strong>Pedro S\u00e1nchez<\/strong>), the former Dutch prime minister said he <strong>did not believe that &#8220;what the United States has done goes against international law.&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">German Chancellor <strong>Friedrich Merz <\/strong>shared this stance: &#8220;T<strong>here is no reason to criticize what America did over the weekend.<\/strong>&#8221;\u00a0&#8220;Of course, <strong>it is not without risk<\/strong>&#8221; in terms of potential consequences, he conceded, &#8220;but <strong>leaving things as they were was not an option.<\/strong>&#8221; Words that sound sadly prophetic.
