Against the most dire\u00a0predictions, the <strong>Trump earthquake<\/strong> did not disrupt the NATO summit in The Hague, which closed without any particular drama with the green light from the 32 member states to <strong>increase defense spending by up to 5% of GDP<\/strong> over the next ten years. In fact, the entire summit was essentially a <strong>red carpet rolled out for\u00a0the <i>tycoon<\/i><\/strong>, treated as a deity on earth.<\/p>\n<h3 id='the-new-spending-targets'  id=\"boomdevs_1\" class=\"p1\">The new spending targets<\/h3>\n<p class=\"p1\">Today (25 June),\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/en\/2025\/06\/24\/natos-summit-in-the-hague-grapples-with-the-trump-earthquake\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the two-day meeting\u00a0in The Hague<\/a>\u00a0ended\u00a0with a <strong>joint declaration<\/strong>\u00a0that enshrines, in black and white, the <strong>historic increase in national military spending<\/strong> to <strong>5 percent of GDP by 2035<\/strong>, as<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/en\/2025\/06\/05\/nato-towards-consensus-on-new-military-expenditure-target-of-5-per-cent-of-gdp\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">widely anticipated<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><strong>Donald Trump<\/strong>, the Alliance&#8217;s majority stakeholder, called it a &#8220;<strong>monumental win&#8221;<\/strong> and took credit for it. A victory &#8220;for the United States because we were carrying an unfair burden, but it is also a <strong>victory for Europe and Western civilization<\/strong>,&#8221; he declared triumphantly at the end of the proceedings.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">The commitment includes, on the one hand, <strong>investments of at least 3.5 percent of GDP in &#8220;basic defense needs&#8221;<\/strong> (including arms, ammunition, salaries, barracks, and military infrastructure) to meet the <strong>new NATO capability goals<\/strong>. A review of the Alliance&#8217;s new spending trajectory is set for 2029.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Thus, the doubts that had<a href=\"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/en\/2025\/06\/24\/natos-summit-in-the-hague-grapples-with-the-trump-earthquake\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> loomed over the heads of the 32 leaders<\/a> until yesterday were dispelled, including the objections <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/en\/2025\/06\/23\/nato-agrees-to-raise-military-spending-to-5-percent-of-gdp-by-2035-spain-secures-waiver\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">recently raised<\/a>\u00a0by Spanish Prime Minister <strong>Pedro S\u00e1nchez<\/strong> regarding the new spending targets, which he deemed &#8220;unreasonable.&#8221; The Socialist leader&#8217;s remarks did not sit well with Trump: <strong>Spain &#8220;is the only NATO country that refuses to pay,&#8221;<\/strong> he blurted out, denouncing <strong>Madrid&#8217;s attitude<\/strong> <strong>as<\/strong> <strong>&#8220;terrible&#8221; <\/strong>and threatening to double the tariffs on the Iberian country in future trade negotiations (which are actually conducted\u00a0by the European Commission on behalf of all Twenty-Seven).<\/p>\n<h3 id='a-promising-debut-for-rutte'  id=\"boomdevs_2\" class=\"p1\">A promising debut for Rutte<\/h3>\n<p class=\"p1\">Secretary General of the North Atlantic Alliance, <strong>Mark Rutte<\/strong>, brings home a personal success of no small measure. And on which the <strong>US president had remained vague<\/strong> even yesterday, provocatively observing that there are &#8220;<strong>numerous definitions<\/strong>&#8221; of that fundamental provision.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">At the end of today&#8217;s session, Trump sounded conciliatory when he said he <strong>wanted to &#8220;help&#8221; European leaders protect their countries<\/strong>. Rutte remarked,\u00a0&#8220;America is committed to NATO but expects allies to do more.&#8221; &#8220;And the <strong>allies of the EU and Canada will do more<\/strong>,&#8221; he promised, reiterating a <i>leitmotif<\/i> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/en\/2025\/06\/23\/nato-agrees-to-raise-military-spending-to-5-percent-of-gdp-by-2035-spain-secures-waiver\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">he has been repeating for some time now.<\/a><\/p>\n<h3 id='the-ukraine-issue'  id=\"boomdevs_3\" class=\"p1\">The Ukraine issue<\/h3>\n<p class=\"p1\">The other topic on The Hague agenda was<strong> support for the aggrieved Ukraine<\/strong>. It is an indigestible topic for Trump, who has <strong>drastically reduced Washington&#8217;s aid to Kyiv <\/strong>and, at the same time, harbors a cordial dislike for <strong>Volodymyr Zelensky<\/strong> and genuine admiration for <strong>Vladimir Putin<\/strong>. Ultimately, the tycoon agreed to <strong>a face-to-face with his Ukrainian counterpart<\/strong>, describing him as &#8220;very kind&#8221; and acknowledging that &#8220;he is fighting a <strong>brave and difficult battle<\/strong>.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">&#8220;He <strong>wants to get to the end&#8221; of the war<\/strong>,&#8221; he acknowledged, adding that he <strong>would hear from the Kremlin occupant<\/strong>\u00a0again to seek a solution. Zelensky,\u00a0who later also met with the leaders of the so-called <strong>E5<\/strong> (France, Italy, Germany, Poland, and the UK), described the bilateral meeting as &#8220;<strong>long and substantial,<\/strong>&#8221; claiming that they &#8220;discussed how to achieve a ceasefire and real peace.&#8221;<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-o-mail-quote-node=\"1\" data-o-mail-quote=\"1\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">I had a meeting with the leaders of the E5 group of countries \u2013 Germany, France, the United Kingdom, Italy, and Poland \u2013 as well as the NATO Secretary General.<\/p>\n<p>Strengthening Ukraine\u2019s air shield is crucial, and today we primarily discussed air defense systems and interceptors\u2026<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/en\/2025\/06\/09\/rutte-calls-for-400-boost-in-natos-anti-aircraft-capabilities\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">which has been repeating itself for a long time<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; Volodymyr Zelenskyy (@ZelenskyyUa) <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/S6wJDx9ThP\">pic.twitter.com\/S6wJDx9ThP<\/a>&lt;\/blockquote<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-o-mail-quote-node=\"1\" data-o-mail-quote=\"1\">\n<p class=\"p1\"><span style=\"font-style: normal;\">However, when it comes to\u00a0the <\/span><strong><span style=\"font-style: normal;\">attitude to hold towards Russia<\/span><\/strong><span style=\"font-style: normal;\"> after almost three and a half years of neo-imperialist warfare, the <\/span><strong><span style=\"font-style: normal;\">distance between the two sides of the Atlantic remains vast<\/span><\/strong><span style=\"font-style: normal;\">. According to Trump, Putin is &#8220;<\/span><strong><span style=\"font-style: normal;\">ill-advised<\/span><\/strong><span style=\"font-style: normal;\">,&#8221; while Rutte confirms that he &#8220;<\/span><strong><span style=\"font-style: normal;\">does not trust&#8221; the Tsar and his &#8220;lies.&#8221;<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-style: normal;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span style=\"font-style: normal;\">Another <\/span><strong><span style=\"font-style: normal;\">cold shower<\/span><\/strong><span style=\"font-style: normal;\"> also on sanctions. The US Secretary of State, <\/span><strong><span style=\"font-style: normal;\">Marco Rubio<\/span><\/strong><span style=\"font-style: normal;\">, reiterated that the <\/span><strong><span style=\"font-style: normal;\">White House does not intend to increase the pressure on Moscow<\/span><\/strong><span style=\"font-style: normal;\">, at least for now. Brussels is working on the <\/span><strong><span style=\"font-style: normal;\">18th package of restrictive measures<\/span><\/strong><span style=\"font-style: normal;\">, even if the mystery of lowering the <\/span><strong><span style=\"font-style: normal;\">price cap on Russian crude<\/span><\/strong><span style=\"font-style: normal;\"> remains as it\u00a0would require the agreement of all G7 partners.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span style=\"font-style: normal;\">In the final communiqu\u00e9 of the summit, however, the Europeans managed to include the reference to the Federation as a &#8220;<\/span><strong><span style=\"font-style: normal;\">long-term threat to Euro-Atlantic security<\/span><\/strong><span style=\"font-style: normal;\">,&#8221; and the head of the Alliance reiterated in front of the microphones that Ukraine&#8217;s <\/span><strong><span style=\"font-style: normal;\">path to NATO membership is &#8220;irreversible<\/span><\/strong><span style=\"font-style: normal;\">.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id='the-crisis-in-the-middle-east'  id=\"boomdevs_4\" class=\"p1\"><span style=\"font-style: normal;\">The crisis in the Middle East<\/span><\/h3>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span style=\"font-style: normal;\">Although not on the agenda of the proceedings, the <\/span><strong><span style=\"font-style: normal;\">Middle East <\/span><\/strong><span style=\"font-style: normal;\">crisis was certainly in the spotlight.\u00a0The <\/span><strong><span style=\"font-style: normal;\">ceasefire <\/span><\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/en\/2025\/06\/24\/trump-announced-israel-iran-ceasefire-appears-to-have-already-been-violated\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong><span style=\"font-style: normal;\">that Trump personally brokered<\/span><\/strong> <\/a><strong><span style=\"font-style: normal;\">between Israel and Iran is holding<\/span><\/strong><span style=\"font-style: normal;\">. He\u00a0announced that he will <\/span><strong><span style=\"font-style: normal;\">meet the leadership of the Islamic Republic<\/span><\/strong><span style=\"font-style: normal;\"> next week to discuss Tehran&#8217;s <\/span><strong><span style=\"font-style: normal;\">nuclear program<\/span><\/strong><span style=\"font-style: normal;\">, even though, he says, that program no longer exists.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span style=\"font-style: normal;\">For their part, NATO leaders have hastened to\u00a0<strong>dutifully\u00a0<\/strong><\/span><strong><span style=\"font-style: normal;\">acknowledge the president&#8217;s role\u00a0<\/span><\/strong><span style=\"font-style: normal;\">in resolving (at least temporarily) the conflict between the two regional powers, which <\/span><strong><span style=\"font-style: normal;\">was in danger of spiraling out of control<\/span><\/strong><span style=\"font-style: normal;\"> and spilling far\u00a0beyond regional borders. The postcard from The Hague shows an\u00a0apparently happy <\/span><strong><span style=\"font-style: normal;\">family<\/span><\/strong><span style=\"font-style: normal;\">. Yet, even the transatlantic one is <\/span><strong><span style=\"font-style: normal;\">unhappy in its own way<\/span><\/strong><span style=\"font-style: normal;\">.
