It is a &#8220;<strong>strategic disagreement<\/strong>&#8221; with <strong>Hungary&#8217;s<\/strong>\u00a0<strong>Viktor Orb\u00e1n<\/strong>, EU sources reiterate. The strongman from Budapest has long put his foot down on <strong>opening the negotiating clusters to bring Kyiv into the twelve-star club<\/strong>. That requires unanimity, so the <strong>path to membership is at a standstill.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0px;\">&#8220;<strong>The problem is war<\/strong>,&#8221; reiterated the Hungarian Prime Minister this morning (26 June),<a href=\"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/en\/2025\/06\/25\/eu-leaders-summit-amidst-many-issues-stalemate-over-ukraine-and-divisions-over-israel\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> arriving for the European Council <\/a>in Brussels. &#8220;<strong>If we integrate Ukraine into the EU, we would also integrate the war<\/strong>,&#8221; he reasoned. And if the war ended? Orb\u00e1n doesn&#8217;t even want to think about it: &#8220;<strong>There is no ceasefire<\/strong>,&#8221; he cuts it short, so there is no point in fantasizing about it. And he boasts the result of what he calls a &#8220;<strong>referendum&#8221;\u00a0<\/strong>(actually a questionnaire sent out to citizens, with no legal value) on Kyiv&#8217;s <strong>entry into the European club<\/strong>: of the just over 2 million responses, <strong>95 percent were against<\/strong>, he says.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-o-mail-quote-node=\"1\" data-o-mail-quote=\"1\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">\u274c The Hungarian people have spoken: 95% said NO to dragging Ukraine into the EU! \u274c<\/p>\n<p>They said NO to war, NO to economic ruin, and NO to Brussels\u2019 delusions. As usual, there is support for achieving an unconditional and immediate <strong>truce<\/strong> and a just and lasting <strong>peace<\/strong>, for <strong>continuing to provide\u00a0military aid<\/strong> to Kyiv, and for maintaining\u00a0<strong>pressure on <strong>Vladimir Putin<\/strong>&#8216;s Russia<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Before the discussion, the heads of state and government had an online\u00a0exchange with <strong>Volodymyr Zelensky<\/strong>. The Ukrainian president was supposed to attend the summit in person, but the <strong>heavy Russian bombing forced him to stay at home<\/strong>. The dramatic situation in Kyiv then led to\u00a0a <strong>further change in the\u00a0schedule<\/strong> before the start of the summit, causing the agenda item to shift from the morning to the afternoon.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">The debate between the leaders was rather swift, but the hurdle\u00a0that created some problems around the table was the <strong>sanctions against Moscow<\/strong>.
