Brussels – Health and healthcare, the trade war of tariffs is also hitting medical devices, and the EU, EU\u00a0Trade Commissioner Maros Sefcovic <\/strong>admits, is trying to run for cover by studying replacements for ‘made in the USA’ devices: “The Commission is currently conducting an analysis which will also address the availability of alternatives for the medical devices<\/strong> concerned from domestic capacity and from trade partners such as Switzerland or the United Kingdom<\/strong>,” he said in response to a parliamentary question on the subject<\/a>.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

It is EPP MEP Laurent Castillo who is concerned about the fallout on those in need of medical care that may result from transatlantic tensions. While\u00a0it is true that Donald Trump’s administration has imposed tariffs on specific sectors such as\u00a0steel and aluminium or cars<\/a>, there are also “universal”\u00a0tariffs on any European product sold in the United States. Sefcovic points out that, inevitably, this choice leads the EU executive to\u00a0be unable to rule anything out, not even counter-tariffs on essential items for\u00a0hospitals and treatment centers. “A public consultation was launched on the EU response to the US universal tariffs,” recalls the trade director of the von der Leyen team. “This includes certain medical devices because the US universal tariffs also apply to EU exports of medical devices to the US.”<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n
