After the political agreement\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/en\/2025\/06\/27\/orban-pulls-out-the-eu-renews-17-sanctions-packages-against-russia-for-another-six-months\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">reached by the leaders of the 27 member states<\/a> at last week&#8217;s summit (26 June) and the <strong>approval by\u00a0ambassadors at the Coreper<\/strong> on Friday,\u00a0the formal green light was given this morning by the F<strong>oreign Affairs Council t<\/strong>hrough a written procedure.<strong> No one got in the way<\/strong>, not even Hungary and Slovakia.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Therefore, the <strong>Union renewed for another six months the 17 sectoral sanctions packages and sanctions against specific individuals and entities imposed<\/strong>\u00a0against Moscow since February 2022, when the <strong>large-scale invasion of Ukraine<\/strong> began. The deadline would have been\u00a031 July. The measures will now have to be renewed by the member states <strong>by 31 January 2026<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0px;\">https:\/\/x.com\/eucouncilpress\/status\/1939628779481247897?s=46&#038;t=QZY55j52U6Rc4FhCSpGhIw<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">With today&#8217;s renewal, the approximately EUR 210 billion in Russian Central Bank assets frozen by Euroclear in institutions under EU jurisdiction are also <strong>still<\/strong> frozen, pending the question of what to do with them (there are still many doubts as to the legality &#8211; and political expediency &#8211; of the direct confiscation of the assets, as well as that of the extra-profits they generate).<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">In the meantime, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/en\/2025\/06\/10\/eu-18th-sanctions-package-against-russia-energy-exports-and-banking-targeted\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Brussels is working on<\/a>\u00a0the <strong>18th package,<\/strong> which is intended to hit the Kremlin&#8217;s <strong>shadow fleet<\/strong> and the Federation&#8217;s <strong>energy exports<\/strong> even harder and has been in development for weeks. According to EU sources, the Commission will formally put it on the table of the member states only after a bilateral meeting between <strong>Ursula von der Leyen<\/strong> and Slovak Prime Minister <strong>Robert Fico<\/strong> (concerned about<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/en\/2025\/06\/26\/eu-27-minus-one-renews-support-for-ukraine-keeps-slovakia-in-line-on-sanctions\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Russian gas supplies to Bratislava<\/a>), expected in the coming days.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">However, the fate of the measure that the EU executive wanted to place at the center of the new round of restrictive measures &#8212;\u00a0\u00a0<strong>lowering of the <i>price cap<\/i> on Russian crude &#8212;<\/strong> \u00a0is much more uncertain as\u00a0it\u00a0is a <strong>decision taken within the G7<\/strong>, and would therefore require approval from the other group partners to make it a reality.
