The Caucasian country is attempting to <strong>break free from\u00a0the Russian orbit<\/strong> and enter the European one, but there is still a long way to go. And it passes through the <strong>normalization of relations with neighboring Azerbaijan<\/strong> after decades of war, as well as <strong>defense against Russian &#8220;hybrid threats.&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Speaking alongside her Armenian counterpart <strong>Ararat Mirzoyan<\/strong>, the twelve-star diplomatic chief announced yesterday (30 June) that the European Commission had &#8220;adopted its proposal for the <strong>visa liberalization action plan&#8221;<\/strong> with the 27 member states, a symbolic first step in continuing to <strong>shorten the distance between Yerevan and Brussels<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">A step that\u00a0Armenian\u00a0Prime Minister <strong>Nikol Pashinyan strongly advocated for and whose<\/strong> government had<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/en\/2025\/01\/10\/armenian-government-wants-to-join-the-european-union\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">begun moving<\/a>\u00a0in the direction of EU accession\u00a0in January, securing <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/en\/2025\/03\/26\/armenia-parliament-calls-for-start-of-eu-accession-negotiations\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">in March<\/a> the green light from the national parliament. At least two swords of Damocles hang over the country led by Pashinyan &#8212; the <strong>relations with Azerbaijan and Russia<\/strong>. According to Mirzoyan, talks to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/en\/2025\/03\/14\/armenia-and-azerbaijan-agree-on-the-terms-of-a-peace-treaty\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">normalize with Baku<\/a> are proceeding.\u00a0The goal is the <strong>signing of to sign a peace treaty as soon as possible<\/strong>, perhaps ideally by the end of the year.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><strong>Brussels &#8220;supports&#8221; the process<\/strong>, Kallas reiterated, which must be based on &#8220;respect for sovereignty, territorial integrity, and the inviolability of borders.&#8221; It supports this also, or perhaps above all, &#8220;from the point of view of the <strong>Central Asia connectivity projects,&#8221;<\/strong> i.e., those <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/en\/2025\/05\/28\/the-eu-adopts-a-strategy-for-the-black-sea-after-three-years-of-war-in-ukraine\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">recently declared projects<\/a>\u00a0announced by the EU executive with the <strong>Black Sea Strategy<\/strong> that involves, precisely, both Baku and Yerevan.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">The <strong>ties with Moscow<\/strong> could be even more problematic. The Federation is Armenia&#8217;s <strong>historic ally<\/strong> (a former Soviet republic <strong>still dependent on Russia<\/strong> mainly for exports and energy supplies). Since February 2024, the Caucasian country has effectively <strong>frozen<\/strong>\u00a0i<strong>ts participation in the military alliance<\/strong>, announcing its intention <strong>to withdraw from it as soon as possible.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Also for this reason, Kallas urged her counterpart not to let his guard down and <strong>keep an eye on &#8220;hybrid threats&#8221;<\/strong> posed by the overbearing Russian\u00a0neighbor, including the <strong>Kremlin&#8217;s disinformation and\u00a0interference in the entire region, <\/strong>as seen in the electoral and political processes in several countries from <strong>Georgia<\/strong> to <strong>Moldova<\/strong> and <strong>Romania<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Mirzoyan received the message, instructing Moscow to stay out of Armenia&#8217;s domestic affairs. Starting with the arrest of Archbishop <strong>Bagrat Galstanyan<\/strong>, a prominent figure in the Armenian Apostolic Church and <strong>leader of the anti-government opposition<\/strong>, for his alleged involvement in a <strong>coup attempt<\/strong> that Yerevan does not exclude could be supported by the Kremlin itself.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>High Representative Kaja Kallas praised Yerevan&#8217;s progress in moving closer to the European club and its peace efforts with Azerbaijan.
