Brussels – The European University Institute (EUI) today announced the appointment<\/a> of Armando Barucco<\/b> as its new Secretary General. Formerly Italy’s ambassador to Morocco and Mauritania<\/b>, Barucco officially took up the post on 30 June 2025<\/b>. <\/p>\n

As Secretary-General, Ambassador Barucco will work alongside the EUI President, playing a central role in defining institutional policies, strengthening external relations, and coordinating with member states and EU bodies. He will also oversee governance mechanisms, lead outreach activities with public and private stakeholders and contribute to the long-term strategic vision of the Institute, both locally and internationally. <\/p>\n

A career diplomat, Barucco has over 30 years of experience in multilateral affairs, EU diplomacy, and global governance. He served as Ambassador of Italy to Morocco and Mauritania (2021\u20132024)<\/b> and to Sudan (2011\u20132015)<\/b>, and previously held leadership roles at the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, including Director of the Policy Planning Unit (2015\u20132021)<\/b>. He was also Antici Adviser<\/b> of the Permanent Representation of Italy to the EU in Brussels (2007\u20132011) and Consul General in Mumbai, India<\/b> (2002\u20132003). He previously held posts in Malaysia, at the Directorate General for the EU at the Farnesina and at the Permanent Representation of Italy to the Union.<\/p>\n

 Barucco holds a law degree from La Sapienza University of Rome<\/b>, is a graduate of the College of Europe in Bruges<\/b> and is a member of the Weatherhead Center for International Affairs at Harvard University<\/b>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
