The EU executive proposes accelerating the creation of a<strong>&nbsp;special <em>nature credits scheme<\/em><\/strong> aimed at promoting virtuous entrepreneurial actions in terms of environmental conservation and restoration. The proposal follows&nbsp;the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/en\/2025\/06\/23\/chaos-over-withdrawal-of-eu-law-against-greenwashing-last-trialogue-skips-anger-of-socialists-and-liberals\/\">withdrawal<strong> <\/strong><\/a><strong>of the <a href=\"https:\/\/environment.ec.europa.eu\/topics\/circular-economy\/green-claims_en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">proposed<\/a>&nbsp;Green Claims<strong><strong>&nbsp;Act<\/strong>, which aims to combat greenwashing by companies, and after <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/en\/2025\/07\/02\/the-numbers-are-there-the-parliament-will-vote-no-confidence-in-von-der-leyen-on-10-july\/\">the scheduling of the motion of censure against the Commission and its president<\/a>, Ursula von der Leyen.&nbsp;<\/strong><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The timing is anything but casual. Von der Leyen is facing a no-confidence vote amid accusations of a lack of transparency in the conclusion of anti-COVID vaccine contracts with&nbsp;pharmaceutical company Pfizer on the one hand, and the discontent of Socialists, Liberals, and Greens over the backtracking on corporate sustainability arrangements on the other hand. Today (7 July), the plenary will debate&nbsp;the censure motion against&nbsp;the von der Leyen Commission, with the president now able to stand firm with this announcement aimed at mending rifts and discontent with S&amp;D, Re, and Greens.<strong><strong>&nbsp;<\/strong><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Admittedly<strong><strong>, <strong>while the corporate environmental declaration&nbsp;regulation that was rolled back was mandatory, the new <em>nature credits<\/em> scheme is a voluntary tool.<\/strong><\/strong><\/strong> However,&nbsp;the measure is a cleverly crafted compromise that saves face and oneself,&nbsp;preserving the European legislature&#8217;s integrity.<\/p>\n<h4 id='nature-credits-what-they-are-and-how-they-work'  id=\"boomdevs_1\"><strong><strong>Nature credits, what they are and how they work<\/strong><\/strong><\/h4>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0px\"><strong><strong><br \/>\n<\/strong><\/strong>Halfway between sustainability labels (eco-labels) and emission certificates, special nature credits are designed to recognize specific actions undertaken by individuals, such as farmers, that protect, preserve, and restore nature, soil, and ecosystems as sustainable. Through sustainability certification by a special independent authority, private and public investors can decide to participate in these actions by paying to expand their green-economy portfolios. By doing so, the promoters of green initiatives receive funds to use in the real economy.<strong><strong><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_431765\" style=\"width: 1134px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/roswall-250707.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-431765\" src=\"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/roswall-250707.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"1134\" height=\"637\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/roswall-250707.png 1134w, https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/roswall-250707-300x169.png 300w, https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/roswall-250707-1024x575.png 1024w, https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/roswall-250707-768x431.png 768w, https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/roswall-250707-750x421.png 750w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1134px) 100vw, 1134px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-431765\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><span style=\"font-weight: normal\">Environment Commissioner, Jessika Roswall<\/span> [<span style=\"font-weight: normal\">Brussels, 7 July,&nbsp;2025]<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span class=\"HwtZe\" lang=\"en\"><span class=\"jCAhz ChMk0b\"><span class=\"ryNqvb\"><span style=\"font-weight: normal\">By being certified, nature credits&nbsp;establish financial incentives to invest in nature-friendly actions and provide a standardized format for such investments.<\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: normal\"> <\/span><span class=\"jCAhz ChMk0b\"><span class=\"ryNqvb\"><span style=\"font-weight: normal\">For companies, nature credits can help make their production processes more environmentally friendly, enhance their creditworthiness, and facilitate access to finance.<\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: normal\"> Furthermore, <\/span><span class=\"jCAhz ChMk0b\"><span class=\"ryNqvb\"><span style=\"font-weight: normal\">they can help reduce risks in their supply chains, reduce insurance premiums, and meet corporate biodiversity goals.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span>&nbsp;<\/strong><\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0px\">&#8220;This is not about turning nature into a commodity, but about recognizing and rewarding actions that restore and sustain nature,&#8221; said Environment Commissioner<strong><strong> <strong>Jessika Roswall,<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/strong><\/strong>convinced of the need for&nbsp;the action launched<strong><strong>. &#8220;<strong>75 percent of our services depend on the environment,<\/strong>&#8221; <\/strong><\/strong>and this is also why &#8220;investing in nature becomes not the exception, but the norm.&#8221; On this path, she adds<strong><strong>, &#8220;It is key to avoid greenwashing,&#8221;&nbsp;<\/strong><\/strong>the practice of superficial&nbsp;sustainability. And so, what the Commission backtracked on returns to the spotlight.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0px\"><strong><strong><span class=\"HwtZe\" lang=\"en\"><span class=\"jCAhz ChMk0b\"><span class=\"ryNqvb\"><span class=\"ryNqvb\"><span style=\"font-weight: normal\">&#8220;We need to invest more in nature restoration&#8221;, and from this point of view, &#8220;nature credits have the potential to attract essential private investment,&#8221; the Environment Commissioner continues.
