According to the results of a recent study, nearly four out of ten young Europeans do not consider the EU&#8217;s functioning to be democratic enough. At the same time, the percentage of those who would like to see more integration between Member States is slightly higher.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">The&nbsp;<span style=\"margin: 0px;padding: 0px\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.tui-stiftung.de\/unsere-projekte\/junges-europa-die-jugendstudie-der-tui-stiftung\/jugendstudie-2025\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">&nbsp;ninth edition&nbsp;<\/a>of the&nbsp;<strong>annual Y<\/strong><em><strong>oung Europe&nbsp;<\/strong><\/em><strong>study<\/strong>, conducted by the&nbsp;<strong>Tui Foundation<\/strong>, presents a nuanced picture of the opinions of&nbsp;<strong>16\u201326-year-old Europeans<\/strong><\/span>, the youngest segment of the electorate who, in several cases, voted for the first time in the last European elections in June 2024.&nbsp;<span style=\"text-align: inherit\">The sample of respondents counts 6,703 people in&nbsp;<\/span><strong style=\"text-align: inherit\">France<\/strong><span style=\"text-align: inherit\">,&nbsp;<\/span><strong style=\"text-align: inherit\">Germany<\/strong><span style=\"text-align: inherit\">,&nbsp;<\/span><strong style=\"text-align: inherit\">Greece<\/strong><span style=\"text-align: inherit\">,&nbsp;<\/span><strong style=\"text-align: inherit\">Italy<\/strong><span style=\"text-align: inherit\">,&nbsp;<\/span><strong style=\"text-align: inherit\">Poland<\/strong><span style=\"text-align: inherit\">,&nbsp;<\/span><strong style=\"text-align: inherit\">the United Kingdom<\/strong><span style=\"text-align: inherit\">,<\/span><span style=\"text-align: inherit\">&nbsp;and&nbsp;<\/span><strong style=\"text-align: inherit\">Spain<\/strong><span style=\"text-align: inherit\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">The absolute majority of the young people surveyed (57 per cent) <strong>prefer democracy<\/strong> to any other form of government. Still, more than a fifth of them (21 per cent) claim to be <strong>favourable to an authoritarian regime under certain circumstances<\/strong>, albeit unspecified. A figure that, for <strong>Italy<\/strong>, even rises to <strong>24 per cent<\/strong>. For 48 per cent of Europeans, the national <strong>democratic system<\/strong> is &#8216;in danger&#8217;, while for only 6 per cent, their country&#8217;s democracy is functioning well and does not need improvement.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_60416\" style=\"width: 1024px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/elezioni_amministrative.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-60416 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/elezioni_amministrative-1024x737.jpg\" alt=\"elezioni\" width=\"1024\" height=\"737\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/elezioni_amministrative-1024x737.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/elezioni_amministrative-300x216.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/elezioni_amministrative-208x150.jpg 208w, https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/elezioni_amministrative-435x313.jpg 435w, https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/elezioni_amministrative-280x201.jpg 280w, https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/elezioni_amministrative-560x403.jpg 560w, https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/elezioni_amministrative-624x449.jpg 624w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-60416\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Archive photo<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p class=\"p1\">Regarding the EU, 51 per cent consider it to be &#8220;<strong>a good idea, but implemented very inadequately<\/strong>&#8220;, while 39 per cent believe that <strong>it does not work in a particularly democratic way<\/strong>. Speaking of European democracy, only 15&nbsp;<span style=\"margin: 0px;padding: 0px\">per cent of the sample considers themselves&nbsp;<strong>represented by the Strasbourg Chamber<\/strong>&nbsp;(a six percentage point drop<\/span>&nbsp;compared to 2019, when the previous European elections were held).<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">For 53 per cent of the respondents, the <strong>Union focuses on futile<\/strong> or otherwise non-essential issues. The priorities on which Brussels&#8217; action should focus, according to the sample surveyed (which, however, does not consider the decisive role of individual governments in shaping European policies), are the <strong>cost of living<\/strong> (36 per cent), <strong>defence against external threats<\/strong> (25 per cent), <strong>climate action<\/strong> and building <strong>better economic conditions<\/strong> (both 23 per cent). For Italians, the most pressing&nbsp;issues are <strong>economic and financial policies<\/strong> (32 per cent), <strong>climate and environmental protection<\/strong> (29 per cent), <strong>migration<\/strong> and <strong>foreign and defence policy<\/strong> (both 27 per cent).<\/p>\n<p>Support for <strong>tighter immigration controls<\/strong> is rising sharply. Whereas the share of &#8216;hawks&#8217; among young Europeans stood at 26 per cent in 2021, it has now risen to <strong>38 per cent<\/strong>. In contrast, support for strong <strong>climate action<\/strong>, even at the expense of <strong>economic growth<\/strong>, has fallen sharply: <strong>32 per cent<\/strong> of respondents now believe this, whereas four years ago 44 per cent did.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0px\">&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Moreover, only 42 per cent of young Europeans consider the EU to be a <strong>global geopolitical power<\/strong>, while 83 per cent see the <strong>United States<\/strong>, 75 per cent <strong>China,<\/strong> and 57 per cent <strong>Russia<\/strong> as the leading players. In Italy, this figure rises to 53 per cent of the total, the highest value recorded by the survey, alongside Germany.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Finally, the <strong>polarisation of European societies<\/strong>, a phenomenon along strict gender lines, is also on the rise. At an aggregate level, 19 per cent of respondents declare themselves right-wing (+5 points compared to 2021), 33 per cent centre (-3 points), and 32 per cent left-wing (+2). In Italy, this is 18 per cent for the right (+2 points over 2021), 29 per cent for the centre (-1), and 34 per cent for the left (+9 points).<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">The <strong>young women who&nbsp;<\/strong><span style=\"margin: 0px;padding: 0px\"><strong>identify as progressive<\/strong>&nbsp;are growing in France, Germany, and Italy, while the&nbsp;<strong>young men who consider themselves conservative<\/strong>&nbsp;are increasing<\/span>&nbsp;in Greece and Poland. In the Belpaese, there has been an increase from 29 to 42 per cent in four years among <strong>female left-wingers<\/strong>, while the <strong>increase in conservatism among men<\/strong> over the same period has stopped at +7 points, from 19 to 26 per cent.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The latest survey by the Tui Foundation paints a chiaroscuro picture of the views on democracy among the youngest segment of the electorate in several countries of the Old Continent.
