Despite clear indications from Brussels, which only&nbsp;<span style=\"margin:0;padding:0;text-align:left\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/en\/2025\/06\/17\/eu-will-ban-all-gas-and-oil-import-contracts-from-russia-by-the-end-of-2027\/\" target=\"_blank\">a month ago<\/a><\/span>&nbsp;put on the table a tight timetable to achieve independence from Russian gas and oil by 2027, Hungary is ready to finance the construction&nbsp;<span style=\"margin: 0px;padding: 0px\">of<strong>&nbsp;a<\/strong><\/span><strong>&nbsp;new pipeline that could supply Serbia with Moscow&#8217;s crude<\/strong>. &#8220;We are proceeding with Serbian and Russian partners,&#8221; Budapest&#8217;s&nbsp;<span class=\"css-1jxf684 r-dnmrzs r-1udh08x r-1udbk01 r-3s2u2q r-bcqeeo r-1ttztb7 r-qvutc0 r-poiln3\"><span class=\"css-1jxf684 r-bcqeeo r-1ttztb7 r-qvutc0 r-poiln3\"><span style=\"margin: 0px;padding: 0px\">Foreign Minister, <strong>P\u00e9ter Szijj\u00e1rt\u00f3<\/strong>, announced today (July&nbsp;21)<\/span>.&nbsp;<\/span><\/span><span style=\"margin: 0px;padding: 0px\">At the other end of the pipeline, Belgrade would&nbsp;<span style=\"margin: 0px;padding: 0px\">further compromise the<a href=\"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/en\/2024\/09\/05\/eu-warns-serbia-aligning-with-russia-contrary-to-stated-goal-of-membership\/\" target=\"_blank\">&nbsp;EU accession process, which is already a decidedly uphill<\/a> task<\/span>.<\/span>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>It will be more than 100 kilometres long and will connect the Druzhba, the so-called &#8216;friendship pipeline&#8217;, to the Serbian city of Novi Sad. It&nbsp;<span style=\"margin: 0px;padding: 0px\">is expected to have a capacity of 4-5 million tonnes per year and<strong>&nbsp;is scheduled to<\/strong><\/span><strong>&nbsp;be in operation by 2027<\/strong>. Just when the other European countries, except for Slovakia, which stands by Hungary in the battle to maintain Russian supplies, are expected to turn off the taps from the Kremlin for good. In June, Russian Deputy Prime Minister Alexander Novak confirmed the Federation&#8217;s readiness to supply oil to a project that &#8220;will help diversify Serbia&#8217;s oil supply routes.&#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aa.com.tr\/en\/europe\/hungary-serbia-announce-new-oil-pipeline-to-bypass-eu-energy-restrictions\/3637378#\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Today<\/a>, Szijjarto <strong>openly attacked the EU<\/strong>, which, with its energy strategy\u2014this is the criticism\u2014&#8221;will force Hungarian families to pay two to four times more.&#8221; Hungary &#8220;will not fall victim to these disastrous decisions,&#8221; promised Orb\u00e1n&#8217;s loyal minister.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_432909\" style=\"width: 1538px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-432909\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"img-fluid\" data-file-name=\"image.png\" src=\"\/web\/image\/89-e1e09359\/image.png?access_token=1e53a91f-7f17-4030-985f-8fce41e23c94\"><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Russian President Vladimir Putin (left) and his Serbian counterpart Aleksandar Vu\u010di\u0107 (photo: Alexander Zemlianichenko\/Afp)<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0px\">From Budapest&#8217;s perspective, besides protecting households from energy price increases caused by EU policies, the infrastructure project is <strong>fundamental to national energy security<\/strong> and regional cooperation with Serbia. Belgrade, in turn, continues to walk a&nbsp;<span style=\"margin: 0px;padding: 0px\">delicate line, with one foot towards Brussels and the other&nbsp;<strong>anchored to deep historical, cultural, economic,<\/strong><\/span><strong>&nbsp;and energy ties with Moscow<\/strong>. The country&#8217;s main oil company, NIS, is controlled by Russia&#8217;s Gazprom and is already the target of sanctions by the United States\u2014so far, always postponed. The authoritarian and hotly contested president, <strong>Aleksandar Vu\u010di\u0107<\/strong>, travelled to Moscow to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/en\/2025\/05\/08\/all-of-putins-men-whos-attending-moscows-may-9-parade\/\">celebrate<\/a> the 80th anniversary of the Soviet victory over Nazi Germany on 9 May.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0px\">EU Commissioner for Enlargement, <strong>Marta Kos<\/strong>, reiterated today, as a guest of a Slovenian television station, that&nbsp;<strong>Belgrade&#8217;s accession to the 27 is becoming &#8220;complicated&#8221;<\/strong>. The European Commission&#8217;s priority is for Serbia to &#8220;remain on the European path&#8221;, but it is also up to Vu\u010di\u0107 and the government led by \u0110uro Macut to &#8220;prove through reforms that they deserve EU membership.&#8221;&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0px\">Not exactly the message sent out by an initiative that not only speaks of energy security, but also carries&nbsp;a strong geopolitical connotation, reinforcing the pro-Russian axis in Europe led&nbsp;by Orb\u00e1n, Putin&#8217;s real Trojan horse within the EU.<\/p><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Hungarian Foreign Minister has announced progress in discussions for the construction of over one hundred kilometres of infrastructure that will connect Novi Sad to the Druzhba friendship pipeline.
