For the first time since the end of <strong>Israel&#8217;s&nbsp;blitz war<\/strong><\/font> <font class=\"text-o-color-5\"><strong>against Iran<\/strong> (with the decisive support of the United States), the Islamic Republic&#8217;s leadership announced<strong>&nbsp;a fresh round of talks with its European counterparts<\/strong> next Friday to <strong>discuss its nuclear programme<\/strong>. But only a couple of days later, <\/font><a href=\"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/en\/2025\/06\/23\/eu-tries-to-keep-the-dialogue-with-iran-open-after-the-us-strike-but-theres-very-little-room-to-maneuver\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the US led<\/a> <font class=\"text-o-color-5\">a <strong>massive bombing operation on Iranian atomic sites<\/strong>, upending negotiations.<\/font><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><font class=\"text-o-color-5\">The US, which&nbsp;<span style=\"margin: 0px;padding: 0px\">had participated in the historic agreement under&nbsp;<strong>Barack Obama<\/strong>&#8216;s second term, withdrew during&nbsp;<strong>Donald Trump<\/strong>&#8216;s first term in office in 2018,&nbsp;<strong>reintroducing some of the sanctions that had been&nbsp;<\/strong><\/span><strong>suspended<\/strong> as a result of the deal. The EU, as well as the entire Western camp,<\/font> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/en\/2025\/07\/15\/human-rights-the-eu-sanctions-iran-for-transnational-repression-of-dissidents\/\">continues to reiterate&nbsp;the&nbsp;stance<\/a> <font class=\"text-o-color-5\">that <strong>Iran must not possess atomic weapons<\/strong>.<\/font><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><font class=\"text-o-color-5\">Now, the Istanbul talks&nbsp;<span style=\"margin: 0px;padding: 0px\">appear to open up a fresh, if&nbsp;<strong>tentative glimmer of hope for the resumption of a stalled diplomatic initiative<\/strong>. For&nbsp;the time being,<\/span>&nbsp;however, no one seems to expect any decisive breakthroughs. The meeting is expected to serve as a means for Tehran to <strong>avert<\/strong><span style=\"margin: 0px;padding: 0px\"><strong>&nbsp;the activation of the snapback mechanism<\/strong>, through which the E3&nbsp;have threatened to&nbsp;<strong>revive the pre-2015 sanctions<\/strong>&nbsp;against the Islamic Republic if&nbsp;<strong>substantial progress<\/strong>&nbsp;in negotiations is<\/span>&nbsp;not made by the end of August.<\/font><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><font class=\"text-o-color-5\">In the meantime, <strong>delegations from Beijing and Moscow<\/strong>, the ayatollahs&#8217; closest allies, will arrive in the Iranian capital tomorrow. &#8220;We are <strong>coordinating constantly with these countries<\/strong> on how to prevent the snapback or how to mitigate its consequences,&#8221; Baghaei said.<\/font><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-o-mail-quote-node=\"1\" data-o-mail-quote=\"1\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">In a letter addressed to UNSG <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/antonioguterres?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">@Antonioguterres<\/a>, the President of the Security Council, EU High Rep Kaja and members of the UN Security Council, I have outlined why the E3 lacks any legal, political, and moral standing to invoke the mechanisms of the JCPOA and UN Resolution 2231\u2026<\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Seyed Abbas Araghchi (@araghchi) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/araghchi\/status\/1946986913933771013?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">July 20, 2025<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p class=\"p1\"><font class=\"text-o-color-5\">In a letter to the UN Secretary General, <strong>Ant\u00f3nio Guterres<\/strong>, Araghchi stated that the E3 countries &#8220;have <strong>no legal, political, or moral legitimacy<\/strong> to invoke&#8221; new restrictive measures because, he explained, they&nbsp;have &#8220;<strong>reneged on their commitments<\/strong>&#8221; under the JCPOA, while also providing &#8220;<strong>political and material support to the recent<\/strong><\/font> <font class=\"text-o-color-5\"><strong>unprovoked and illegal military aggression<\/strong> of the Israeli regime and the United States.&#8221;<\/font><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><font class=\"text-o-color-5\">In recent weeks, the Iranian foreign minister has nevertheless said he is open&nbsp;to <strong>start new talks with the US<\/strong>, provided that Tehran is given <strong>&#8220;guarantees&#8221; that a new war<\/strong> will not erupt&nbsp;once negotiations are resumed.&nbsp;<span style=\"margin: 0px;padding: 0px\">However, he also stressed that,&nbsp;<strong>for now, there are no plans<\/strong>&nbsp;<strong>for diplomatic contacts&nbsp;<\/strong>between the respective parties<\/span>.
