The decision of&nbsp;the Elys\u00e9e, while&nbsp;anticipated, still sent shockwaves across the political world, especially the West. France will thus become the <strong>first G7 country<\/strong>&nbsp;to recognise Palestinian statehood, opening a&nbsp;<strong>significant diplomatic rift with the United States<\/strong>, which, following Israel, immediately condemned the move.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">French President <strong>Emmanuel Macron<\/strong>&nbsp;shared&nbsp;yesterday evening (July 24) with a post on X&nbsp;the announcement that shook global diplomacy, especially among Paris&#8217; closest allies: &#8220;Faithful to its historic commitment to a just and lasting peace in the Middle East, <strong>I have decided that France will recognise the State of Palestine<\/strong>,&#8221; he wrote, specifying that the formal announcement will take place at the next <strong>plenary session of the United Nations General Assembly<\/strong>, scheduled for September.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0px\">\n&#8220;The urgency today is for <strong>the war in Gaza<\/strong> to end and for the <strong>civilian population to receive relief<\/strong>,&#8221; the post continues, calling for &#8220;an immediate <strong>ceasefire<\/strong>, the <strong>release of all hostages<\/strong>, and <strong>massive humanitarian aid<\/strong>&#8221; to the inhabitants of the Palestinian enclave. According to the Tel Aviv strongman, the move by Paris &#8220;<strong>rewards terrorism.<\/strong>&#8221; At the same time, &#8220;a Palestinian statehood under these conditions would be a<strong>&nbsp;launch pad to annihilate Israel<\/strong>, not to live in peace alongside it.&#8221; An interesting <strong>reversal of perspectives and responsibilities<\/strong>, given the current situation&nbsp;on the ground.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">The <strong>United States<\/strong>, Israel&#8217;s staunch&nbsp;ally, is also furious. It&nbsp;<strong>firmly<\/strong> rejects the Elys\u00e9e Palace&#8217;s unilateral move, described by Secretary of State <strong>Marco Rubio<\/strong> as a &#8220;reckless&#8221; decision that &#8220;<strong>sets back peace<\/strong>&#8221; and even represents &#8220;a <strong>slap in the face to the victims of October 7.<\/strong>&#8220;<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">For that matter, Washington did not sign the <strong>international appeal to the government in Tel Aviv<\/strong> to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/en\/2025\/07\/21\/immediate-ceasefire-in-gaza-25-countries-including-italy-against-israel\/\">stop the massacre<\/a>&nbsp;in Gaza and allow <strong>unconditional access to&nbsp;humanitarian aid<\/strong>. Among the signatory countries, <strong>now numbering 28<\/strong>, is <strong>Italy<\/strong> (Rome only began to raise its voice with the Jewish state after the <strong>bombing of a Catholic church in the Strip<\/strong>). At the same time, the other notable absentee, far from surprising, is <strong>Germany<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Berlin&#8217;s Federal Chancellor, <strong>Friedrich Merz<\/strong>, will speak to Macron and British Prime Minister <strong>Keir Starmer<\/strong> in the coming hours for an &#8220;emergency call&#8221; to <strong>coordinate a shared&nbsp;position<\/strong> of the three-nation group (known as the E3) on both the <strong>Palestinian issue<\/strong> and another important dossier: <strong>talks with Tehran on Iran&#8217;s nuclear program<\/strong>, which <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/en\/2025\/07\/21\/iranian-nuclear-programme-tehran-announces-fresh-new-istanbul-talks-with-the-europeans\/\">will resume today<\/a> in Istanbul.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">The Labour prime minister &#8211; who last night declared in a joint statement with Macron and Merz that &#8220;<strong>statehood is the&nbsp;inalienable right of the Palestinian people&#8221;<\/strong> &#8211; is facing <strong>increasing pressure from his own party<\/strong> to follow in the French president&#8217;s footsteps. For some time, his government had been <strong>signaling openness towards the Palestinian cause<\/strong> (albeit with all the necessary diplomatic caution). For months, he has been hinting at&nbsp;the possibility of <strong>formally legitimizing the State of Palestine<\/strong>, joining several European countries that already recognize it.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">France <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/en\/2025\/05\/26\/spain-calls-for-sanctions-on-israel-over-gaza-this-unjust-and-inhuman-war-must-stop\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">was supposed to be<\/a>&nbsp;the co-host, together with <strong>Saudi Arabia,<\/strong>&nbsp;of&nbsp;an international <strong>conference<\/strong> at the UN headquarters&nbsp;in mid-June to <strong>revive the so-called &#8220;two-state solution&#8221;<\/strong> to the Israeli-Palestinian issue. The event<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/en\/2025\/06\/16\/israels-war-against-iran-overshadows-gaza-catastrophe\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">was later canceled<\/a> due to the <strong>12-day war. However, a<\/strong>&nbsp;<strong>meeting at the ministerial level<\/strong>&nbsp;is scheduled to take place on July 28 and 29, which explains the timing of Macron&#8217;s announcement.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Today, <strong>147 UN member states recognize Palestine<\/strong>, out of a total of 193 countries. Among them are 1<strong>1 EU member states <\/strong>(Bulgaria, the Czech Republic, Cyprus, Hungary, Ireland, Poland, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, and Sweden), but <strong>none of the G7 nations.<\/strong> A future Palestinian state should&nbsp;theoretically be established on the <strong>territories of Gaza and the West Bank<\/strong> (including <strong>East Jerusalem<\/strong>), all <strong>illegally occupied by Israel<\/strong> since the 1967 Six-Day War.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">The vice-president of the <strong>Palestinian National Authority (PNA)<\/strong>, <strong>Hussein al-Sheikh<\/strong>, welcomed Macron&#8217;s opening, which he hopes will pave the way for the &#8220;<strong>creation of our independent state<\/strong>.&#8221; The head of the PNA, <strong>Mahmoud Abbas<\/strong>, pledged to <strong>organize new legislative and presidential elections<\/strong> in 2026 and, if a Palestinian state ever comes into being, to <strong>demilitarize the Hamas militias<\/strong>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The French president revives the diplomatic initiative long pursued by Paris, sparking outrage from Tel Aviv and Washington.
