Discontent among the Twenty-Seven"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Brussels &#8211; The <strong>agreement on tariffs between the EU and the United States<\/strong>, concluded on a razor&#8217;s edge before the dreaded <strong>30 per cent tariffs<\/strong> threatened by <strong>Donald Trump <\/strong>came into effect, is &#8220;the best we could get&#8221; and&nbsp;certainly &#8220;much better than a trade war&#8221;. Word of <strong>Maro\u0161 \u0160ef\u010dovi\u010d<\/strong>, the EU&#8217;s Trade Commissioner, who puts on a brave&nbsp;face as he hails the beginning of a <strong>new era in transatlantic relations<\/strong>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;If we had negotiated later, we would have sat at the table from a weaker position.&#8221; This sentence, uttered by <strong>Maro\u0161 \u0160ef\u010dovi\u010d<\/strong>, the EU executive&#8217;s member&nbsp;<span style=\"margin: 0px;padding: 0px\">responsible for trade, sums up the political reading that the Commission wishes to give to the<a href=\"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/en\/2025\/07\/28\/eu-us-reach-tariff-deal-15-rate-and-eu-commitment-to-energy-purchases-from-the-us\/\" target=\"_blank\">&nbsp;historic agreement reached yesterday&nbsp;<\/a><\/span>in Scotland, sealed by a handshake between <strong>Ursula von der Leyen<\/strong> and <strong>Donald Trump<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_433347\" style=\"width: 1024px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/Imagoeconomica_2514725-scaled.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-433347 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/Imagoeconomica_2514725-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"Ursula von der Leyen Donald Trump\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/Imagoeconomica_2514725-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/Imagoeconomica_2514725-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/Imagoeconomica_2514725-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/Imagoeconomica_2514725-1536x1024.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/Imagoeconomica_2514725-2048x1366.jpg 2048w, https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/Imagoeconomica_2514725-750x500.jpg 750w, https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/Imagoeconomica_2514725-1140x760.jpg 1140w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-433347\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and US President Donald Trump (photo: Fred Guerdin via Imagoeconomica)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0px\">\n<p>Speaking to the press this morning (28 July), the&nbsp;<span style=\"margin: 0px;padding: 0px\">long-serving Slovakian commissioner (in various roles, he has been in Brussels continuously since 2009) offered the journalists the Berlaymont spin, which essentially reflects the&nbsp;<strong>reactive<\/strong>&nbsp;<strong>approach<\/strong>&nbsp;followed by Brussels in the<a href=\"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/en\/2025\/07\/23\/tariffs-eu-and-us-close-to-agreement-15-per-cent-reciprocal-tariffs\/\" target=\"_blank\">&nbsp;complex trade negotiations&nbsp;<\/a><\/span>&nbsp;with the White House.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0px\"><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0px\">The tycoon&#8217;s tactic of <strong>constantly upping the ante<\/strong>&nbsp;(it started with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/en\/2025\/07\/23\/tariffs-eu-and-us-close-to-agreement-15-per-cent-reciprocal-tariffs\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">20 per cent<\/a>, then <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/en\/2025\/05\/23\/trumps-new-threat-to-the-eu-50-per-cent-tariffs-from-1-june\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">more than doubled to 50<\/a>, to<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/en\/2025\/07\/14\/prepare-for-war-eu-disappointed-with-30-percent-us-tariffs-seeks-deal-to-retaliate\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">finish with 30<\/a>) eventually paid off: &#8220;With a tariff of at least 30 per cent, our <strong>transatlantic trade would effectively grind to a halt<\/strong>, putting nearly five million jobs at risk&#8221; in the Old Continent, \u0160ef\u010dovi\u010d said.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0px\"><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0px\">Instead, the commissioner says, glossing over the fact that the EU was aiming for a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/en\/2025\/07\/03\/tariffs-sefcovic-in-washington-to-close-deal-eu-aims-at-a-10-per-cent-flat-tariff\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">10 per cent flat rate<\/a>, the agreement reached&nbsp;by the two leaders is&nbsp;<strong>beneficial to both sides<\/strong>, &#8220;brings a <strong>renewed stability<\/strong> and opens the door to a <strong>strategic collaboration<\/strong>&#8221; as a result of &#8220;<strong>months of sincere and unrelenting efforts<\/strong>, unparalleled in intensity and matched only by the unprecedented importance&#8221; of EU-US trade, worth some <strong>$1.700 million&nbsp;a year<\/strong>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0px\"><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0px\">\u0160ef\u010dovi\u010d remarked that we now &#8220;<strong>understand each other and will inform each other much more frequently<\/strong>&#8221; with partners in Washington, emphasising that the understanding reached in Turnberry &#8220;should generate <strong>significant and mutual benefits<\/strong>, and I hope it will be a springboard for a <strong>broader trade and investment agreement<\/strong>&#8221; to be negotiated in the near future. For the time being, therefore, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/en\/2025\/07\/23\/eu-prepares-for-final-rush-on-us-tariffs-from-7-august-single-list-of-e93-billion-countermeasures\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">measures agreed upon with the Twenty-Seven<\/a> remain in mothballs.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0px\"><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0px\">But not all member states are in agreement in their praise of von der Leyen&#8217;s work. However, executive sources note that &#8220;<strong>further negotiations<\/strong> are still needed&#8221; to reduce the <strong>50 per cent tariffs still in place on steel and aluminium<\/strong>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0px\"><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0px\">The governments of <strong>Denmark<\/strong>, <strong>Finland<\/strong>, <strong>Ireland<\/strong>, <strong>Romania,<\/strong> and <strong>Sweden<\/strong> also welcomed the deal, expressing relief that they had achieved at least a <strong>certain level of predictability<\/strong> in transatlantic trade relations. From Madrid, Prime Minister <strong>Pedro S\u00e1nchez<\/strong> says he appreciates the Commission president&#8217;s &#8220;constructive attitude,&#8221; yet expresses &#8220;unenthusiasm&#8221;<strong>&nbsp;about the agreement<\/strong> signed between the Scottish hills.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0px\"><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0px\">Other countries, however, are <strong>raining criticism on Brussels for its perceived weakness<\/strong>.&nbsp;From Paris, Prime Minister <strong>Fran\u00e7ois Bayrou<\/strong> speaks of &#8220;a <strong>sad day&#8221;<\/strong> in which &#8220;an <strong>alliance of free peoples<\/strong>, united to affirm their common values and defend their common interests, <strong>resigns itself to submission<\/strong>.&#8221; For his Hungarian counterpart <strong>Viktor Orb\u00e1n<\/strong>, Trump would not have &#8220;reached an agreement&#8217; with von der Leyen but, instead, would have &#8220;<strong>eaten the president of the European Commission over breakfast<\/strong>.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>For the EU Trade Commissioner, the agreement reached yesterday in Scotland is &#8220;the best possible,&#8221; which avoids much worse scenarios.
