Premier <strong>Gintautas Paluckas<\/strong> has stepped down from the <strong>leadership of the executive<\/strong> and the <strong>Social Democratic Party<\/strong>. The loan was granted by&nbsp;the <strong>national development bank <\/strong>when<strong>&nbsp;<\/strong>Paluckas was already head of government. Lithuanian authorities are also investigating <strong>other suspicious financial activities<\/strong> linked to him.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0px\"><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0px\">In addition, a journalistic investigation revealed a ten-year delay in the payment of a <strong>hefty&nbsp;EUR 16,500 fine<\/strong> for abuse of power, imposed on him in 2012 when he was&nbsp;working as an official at the capital&#8217;s city hall for having&nbsp;<strong>irregularly hired a pest control company<\/strong>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0px\"><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0px\"><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0px\">&#8220;<span dir=\"auto\"><strong>I will wait for the conclusions of the investigations<\/strong> which, I have no doubt, will separate facts from insinuations,&#8221; Paluckas said. Only yesterday, he had announced his intention to <strong>submit his cabinet to a confidence vote in the<\/strong>&nbsp;<strong><em>Seimas<\/em><\/strong>, the single-chamber parliament in Vilnius, as suggested by the head of state.<\/span>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0px\"><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0px\"><span dir=\"auto\">In the past few hours, <strong>Saulius Skvernelis<\/strong>, leader of the <strong>Democratic Union for Lithuania (DSVL)<\/strong> &#8211; the LSPD&#8217;s ally together with the <strong>Alba del Nemunas<\/strong> <strong>(PPNA)<\/strong> &#8211; as well as president of the House,&nbsp;threatened to <strong>withdraw his party from the coalition<\/strong> if Paluckas did not step aside. At the time, the party&#8217;s leader was MP <strong>Vilija&nbsp;<span class=\"mw-page-title-main\">Blinkevi\u010di\u016bt\u0117<\/span><\/strong><span class=\"mw-page-title-main\">, who then passed the baton to Paluckas two months ago.&nbsp;He will now pass the baton to Paluckas&#8217;s former number two and the mayor of the Jonava district, <strong>Mindaugas Sinkevi\u010dius.&nbsp;<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0px\"><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0px\"><span class=\"mw-page-title-main\">Even if the number of social-democratic leaders at the European Council does not change (President Naus\u0117da is representing Vilnius), the exit of the Lithuanian Prime Minister is yet another significant&nbsp;blow for the <strong>Party of European Socialism (PES)<\/strong>, in free fall throughout the Union (as made clear by the results of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/en\/2024\/06\/10\/eu-voters-push-populars-and-pro-european-majority-von-der-leyen-toward-a-second-term\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">latest European elections<\/a>) and also put to the test in one of the few countries where it had managed to hold on in recent years, with the Spanish government of <strong>Pedro S\u00e1nchez<\/strong> hit by a series of scandals.<\/span><\/p><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The leader of the LSDP democrats, who has led the government since December, stepped down because of a scandal involving his financial activities, which authorities are investigating.
