Ukrainian President <strong>Volodymyr Zelensky<\/strong> has signed decrees that effectively annul previous legal provisions and restore independence to the <strong>National Anti-Corruption Bureau (NABU)<\/strong> and the <strong>Office of the Special Anti-Corruption Prosecutor (SAPO)<\/strong>. There will therefore no longer be control by the <strong>Prosecutor General<\/strong>, appointed directly by the Presidency of the Republic. Zelensky&#8217;s decision comes after <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/en\/2025\/07\/23\/ukraine-internal-crisis-deepens-zelenskyy-signs-controversial-anti-corruption-law-sparking-first-mass-protests-since-the-start-of-the-war\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">street protests<\/a> and <strong>international pressure<\/strong> from Kyiv&#8217;s partners, starting with the European Union.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>They rejoice in the very capital of the European Union. &#8220;The signing of the law restoring the independence of NABU and SAPO is a welcome step,&#8221; said the Presidents of the European Council, Antonio Costa, and the head of the EU Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, in a joint note. &#8220;Ukraine\u2019s rule of law and anti-corruption reforms should continue. They remain essential for Ukraine\u2019s progress on the European path,&#8221; they add, recalling the necessary commitments ahead&nbsp;of EU membership.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>With the case settled, the call is now to continue along the agreed path. &#8220;The European Union will continue to support these reform efforts&#8221; necessary to bring Kyiv closer to the twelve-star club, the EU leaders emphasize.&nbsp;Zelensky certainly did not come off well with his&nbsp;partners, and now he and his country will remain under close scrutiny.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>After street protests and international pressure, the president enacted a new law restoring the rule of law.
