While waiting for the joint document to be translated into a legal text, there are those who see the glass half full and those who point the finger at the shortcomings of the solution negotiated in <strong>months of intense talks&nbsp;<\/strong>on both sides of the Atlantic.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Comments have not been long in coming on the <strong>US-EU joint statement<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/en\/2025\/08\/21\/eu-and-us-issue-joint-declaration-on-tariffs-paving-the-way-for-the-new-regime\/\">published today<\/a>, almost a month after the agreement in principle reached in Scotland between <strong>Donald Trump<\/strong> and <strong>Ursula von der Leyen<\/strong>. The 19-point text &#8220;ensures the <strong>best possible conditions for EU companies and consumers<\/strong>,&#8221; assures the EU chief executive, who has to draw&nbsp;water to his own mill and <strong>sell a highly asymmetrical deal as a great success<\/strong>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>A success, he argues, that makes the twelve-star club &#8220;the only partner (in Washington, <em>ed<\/em>) in the world with an all-encompassing <strong>tariff ceiling<\/strong>.&#8221; Brussels, he says, even obtained the &#8220;exclusive guarantee of a limit on <span class=\"searchKey\">tariffs<\/span> for the pharmaceutical and semiconductor sectors,&#8221; a 15 per cent cap &#8220;for the vast majority of products, including cars and medicines&#8221; as well as &#8220;<span class=\"searchKey\">zero-for-zero&#8217; tariffs<\/span>&nbsp;on products such as aircraft, cork, and generic drugs&#8221;, and finally a &#8220;<strong>joint commitment to further reduce <span class=\"searchKey\">tariffs<span style=\"font-weight: normal\">.&#8221;<\/span><\/span><\/strong> All while safeguarding &#8220;the <strong>competitive position of exporters<\/strong>&#8221; and protecting &#8220;millions of jobs.&#8221;\n<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-o-mail-quote-node=\"1\" data-o-mail-quote=\"1\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">Today\u2019s EU-US Joint Statement secures the best possible terms for EU companies and consumers:<\/p>\n<p>\u27a1\ufe0f the EU is the only partner worldwide with an all-inclusive tariff ceiling<br \/>\n\u27a1\ufe0f exclusive guarantee on tariff limit for pharmaceutical and semiconductors sectors<br \/>\n\u27a1\ufe0f all-inclusive 15%\u2026<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; Ursula von der Leyen (@vonderleyen)<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/vonderleyen\/status\/1958519131952787456?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">August 21, 2025<\/a>&nbsp;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0px\">\n<p>The President of the European Council <strong>Ant\u00f3nio Costa<\/strong> echoed her, albeit in less triumphalist tones: according to the former Portuguese Prime Minister, the agreement, finally put down on paper, &#8220;<strong>guarantees predictability and stability<\/strong> for transatlantic economic ties and European businesses,&#8221; but the fact remains that the Union &#8220;must continue to <strong>deepen and expand its global trade partnerships<\/strong>.&#8221;&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0px\">It falls to <strong>Maro\u0161 \u0160ef\u010dovi\u010d<\/strong>, Trade Commissioner, the unpleasant&nbsp;task of presenting the concrete results of months of negotiations at a press conference and defending what the <strong>Berlaymont portrays as a victory<\/strong>. &#8220;For us, particularly important sectors are wine, spirits, and beer,&#8221; he admitted in front of reporters. Unfortunately, &#8220;we did not manage&#8221; to include them &#8220;among those in the <strong>level of the most favoured nation<\/strong>,<strong>&nbsp;<\/strong>but the doors are not closed,&#8221; he explains, &#8220;because both sides agreed to <strong>evaluate other sectors in the future<\/strong>.&#8221;&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0px\">Kick the can down the road, then, and in the meantime, put on a brave face and make the best of a bad situation. It could have been worse.
