But his offer of dialogue does not seem to convince students and opposition, who want the Belgrade strongman to resign.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>In a rather unexpected move, Serbian President <strong>Aleksandar Vu\u010di\u0107<\/strong> has extended his hand to the protesters who have been filling the squares of the Balkan country for more than nine months to demand an end to the <strong>rampant corruption<\/strong> and a general <strong>change of the political class<\/strong>. Including the head of state: &#8220;<strong>Arrest Vu\u010di\u0107&#8221;<\/strong> is one of the placards one happens to read at protests, which broke out last November following the <strong>collapse of a bus shelter in Novi Sad<\/strong>,<strong>&nbsp;<\/strong>causing 16 people to die.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Thus, in a televised address to the nation today (22 August), the president ventured his proposal, offering to hold &#8220;<strong>discussions and debates on all our televisions<\/strong>, on all our websites, with the <strong>legitimate representatives&#8221; of the protest movement<\/strong>. Vu\u010di\u0107 says he intends to &#8220;<strong>address the different visions<\/strong>&#8221; with the aim of &#8220;<strong>resolving the issue through dialogue and confrontation&#8221;<\/strong> and with the ultimate goal of &#8220;rebuilding the country, to bring it back to the situation it was in nine months ago.&#8221;&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Until now, the authoritarian leader seemed <b>irrevocably committed to repression<\/b>, delegating it to law enforcement agencies <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/en\/2025\/03\/17\/pressure-mounts-on-serbian-regime-and-the-eu-after-largest-demonstration-in-the-countrys-history\/\"><b>authorised to use<\/b><\/a> even illegal devices such as sonic cannons to disperse protesters. This is a <strong>corrupt government that tramples on democracy and human rights<\/strong>,&#8221; the caustic comment of <strong>Savo Manojlovi\u0107<\/strong>, leader of the centrist Kreni-Promeni party.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0px\">Oppositions and students are calling on Vu\u010di\u0107 to prove his good faith by stepping aside and <strong>calling early presidential elections<\/strong> as soon as possible, before 2027, when his second term of office (and also his last, according to the Constitution) expires. The head of state &#8220;<strong>does not have an answer to the popular rebellion<\/strong>,&#8221; reads a note from students at the University of Belgrade, in which they agree to discuss but only &#8220;<strong>during the election campaign<\/strong>.&#8221;&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0px\">So far, the only concrete result to which the <strong>oceanic popular protests<\/strong> have led\u2014probably<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/en\/2025\/01\/31\/serbia-protests-will-mark-the-end-of-the-regime-of-aleksandar-vucic-interview-with-srdan-cvijic\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the largest<\/a> in the history of the Balkan country since the implosion of Yugoslavia\u2014is the resignation of the former prime minister <strong>Milo\u0161 Vu\u010devi\u0107<\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/en\/2025\/01\/28\/student-protests-in-serbia-lead-to-resignation-of-prime-minister-vucevic\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> in late January<\/a>, in an egregiously unsuccessful attempt to appease the protesters.<\/p>\n<p>For years, the strongman from Belgrade has posed a <strong>geopolitical dilemma<\/strong> for the EU. With the other, the Hungarian Prime Minister <strong>Viktor Orb\u00e1n<\/strong>,<span style=\"margin: 0px;padding: 0px\">&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/en\/2025\/07\/21\/orban-and-vucic-want-to-bring-russian-crude-oil-to-serbia-via-hungary\/\" target=\"_blank\">Vu\u010di\u0107 is working&nbsp;<\/a>to&nbsp;<strong>extend the Druzhba<\/strong>&nbsp;oil pipeline and bring the Federation&#8217;s crude oil all the way to Serbia, further exacerbating the<a href=\"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/en\/2025\/08\/20\/the-clash-between-hungary-and-ukraine-over-russian-oil-continues\/\" target=\"_blank\">&nbsp;diplomatic friction&nbsp;<\/a><\/span>between Budapest and Kyiv.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0px\">At the same time, however, Vu\u010di\u0107 is <strong>ambivalent towards Ukraine<\/strong>.\n<\/p>\n<p>In June, he <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/en\/2025\/06\/11\/serbia-pro-russian-president-aleksandar-vucic-in-ukraine-for-the-first-time\/\"><b>made a surprise visit<\/b><\/a> to Odessa, where he attended a meeting convened by <b>Volodymyr Zelensky<\/b> himself, and for some time now, <b>Moscow has been accusing Belgrade<\/b> of betraying the traditional friendship between the two countries <b>by selling arms to Kyiv<\/b>.<\/p>\n<p>The upper echelons in Brussels have always claimed to be <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/en\/2025\/04\/30\/serbia-brussels-to-new-government-our-demands-in-line-with-those-of-the-students\/\"><b>on the side of the students<\/b><\/a>, but during their most recent visits to the Serbian capital, both <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/en\/2025\/05\/22\/eu-silent-on-serbia-after-costa-not-even-kallas-criticises-vucic\/\"><b>Kallas<\/b><\/a> and <b>Ant\u00f3nio Costa<\/b>, President of the European Council, were <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/en\/2025\/05\/13\/costa-meets-vucic-but-without-condemning-belgrades-drift-toward-moscow\/\"><b>rather soft<\/b><\/a> in holding Vu\u010di\u0107 accountable for his actions. By a curious coincidence, the European Commission <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/en\/2025\/06\/04\/eu-launches-13-projects-in-third-countries-to-diversify-imports-of-critical-minerals\/\"><b>has included Serbia<\/b><\/a> among the 11 third countries in which it will finance projects for the <b>supply of critical raw materials<\/b>, essential for maintaining the competitiveness of the Old Continent in the 21st century.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The authoritarian and pro-Russian leader of Belgrade tries to defuse the protest movement by offering to publicly confront his representatives.
