Or at least that is the message delivered by <strong>Emmanuel Macron<\/strong>, <strong>Friedrich Merz<\/strong>, and <strong>Donald Tusk<\/strong> to&nbsp;<span style=\"margin: 0px;padding: 0px\"><strong>Maia Sandu<\/strong>, the President of the Republic<\/span>. The visit, on the occasion of&nbsp;<span style=\"margin: 0px;padding: 0px\">Chisinau&#8217;s 34th anniversary of independence, comes a month before&nbsp;<strong>legislative elections that are expected to be highly tense<\/strong>&nbsp;due to fears of<\/span> interference from the Kremlin.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>French President <strong>Emmanuel Macron<\/strong> offered Paris&#8217;s &#8220;determined support&#8221; to Moldova on its path to EU membership, warning about Russian &#8220;lies&#8221; during a visit to the capital&nbsp;<span style=\"margin: 0px;padding: 0px\">alongside German Chancellor&nbsp;<strong>Friedrich Merz<\/strong>&nbsp;and Polish Prime Minister&nbsp;<strong><strong>Donald Tusk<\/strong><\/strong><\/span>. The political symbolism evokes the past while also resonating with the present and the immediate future of the small yet strategically important Balkan country. On <strong>27 August 1991<\/strong>, Chisinau declared its <strong>independence from the Soviet Union<\/strong>, three days after Kyiv.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0px\">In&nbsp;the present context, today&#8217;s visit should be read in the regional context of <strong>increasing geopolitical volatility<\/strong>, exacerbated by Russia&#8217;s aggression against Ukraine. In a month&#8217;s time, on 28 September, voters will be called to the polls to <strong>renew Moldova&#8217;s single-chamber parliament<\/strong>, in a crucial vote that will also mark the country&#8217;s <strong>geopolitical trajectory<\/strong> for the coming years. The fear, in Chisinau as in Brussels, is that the Kremlin will unleash <strong>another campaign of electoral interference<\/strong>.\n<\/p>\n<p>This already happened last November, when Sandu&nbsp;<span style=\"margin: 0px;padding: 0px\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/en\/2024\/11\/04\/pro-european-maia-sandu-won-the-presidential-election-in-moldova-in-the-second-round\/\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>&nbsp;won a second term&nbsp;<\/strong><\/a>by a handful of votes, and the pro-Russian ultra-nationalist&nbsp;<strong>C\u0103lin<\/strong>&nbsp;<strong>Georgescu<\/strong>&nbsp;won the<a href=\"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/en\/2024\/11\/25\/romania-presidential-election-pro-russian-georgescu-surprisingly-ahead-for-runoff\/\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>&nbsp;first round of the Romanian presidential elections&nbsp;<\/strong><\/a><\/span>by surprise, plunging Bucharest into a <b>deep political and institutional crisis<\/b>. As of today, pre-election polls give her centre-right <strong>Party of Action and Solidarity (PAS)<\/strong>&nbsp;a lead with around <strong>39 per cent of the vote<\/strong>, while the pro-Russian <strong>Socialist Party (PSRM)<\/strong> is around 15 per cent. In the 2021 elections, PAS had obtained <strong>just under 53 per cent<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Moreover, Moscow can resort to various weapons in its extensive <strong>hybrid warfare arsenal<\/strong>: not only disinformation and<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/en\/2024\/10\/09\/european-parliament-points-finger-at-putin-stop-interference-in-moldova\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">electoral interference<\/a>, but also the <strong>instrumentalisation of energy flows<\/strong>, for instance. A technique already tried and tested precisely in the Moldovan separatist region of&nbsp;<strong>Transnistria<\/strong>,&nbsp;<span style=\"margin: 0px;padding: 0px\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/en\/2025\/02\/04\/energy-crisis-in-moldova-and-transnistria-eu-unveils-250-million-package-to-counter-russia\/\" target=\"_blank\">&nbsp;which was left without electricity&nbsp;<\/a><\/span>last winter,&nbsp;<span style=\"margin: 0px;padding: 0px\">to&nbsp;<strong>put<\/strong><\/span><strong>&nbsp;pressure on Chisinau<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Finally, the European leaders&#8217; trip to Chisinau was also aimed at reaffirming the Twenty-Seven&#8217;s commitment to welcoming the Balkan nation into the twelve-star club in the near future, perhaps within a few years. &#8220;The <strong>EU door is open for Moldova<\/strong>,&#8221; Merz said, adding that Berlin would &#8220;do everything possible to <strong>open the first chapter of negotiations in the autumn<\/strong>.&#8221;\n<\/p>\n<div class=\"flourish-embed flourish-map\"><\/div>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0px\"><span style=\"text-align: inherit\">The country has&nbsp;<\/span><strong style=\"text-align: inherit\">been an official candidate since June 2022<\/strong><span style=\"text-align: inherit\">, but accession negotiations<\/span><span style=\"margin: 0px;padding: 0px\"><span>&nbsp;<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/en\/2024\/06\/25\/ukraine-moldova-eu-negotiations\/\" target=\"_blank\">started two years later<\/a><\/span><span style=\"text-align: inherit\">, running in parallel with those of Ukraine.<\/span>&nbsp;Despite the progress made by the Balkan state,<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/en\/2025\/06\/04\/moldova-membership-is-getting-closer-but-russia-remains-an-existential-threat\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">recognised on several occasions<\/a> by EU leaders, none of the 35 negotiating chapters to bring Moldovan laws into line with the <em>acquis communautaire<\/em> is currently open.&nbsp;<span style=\"margin: 0px;padding: 0px\">In recent weeks, there has even been speculation about an&nbsp;<strong>uncoupling of Moldova&#8217;s and Ukraine&#8217;s<\/strong>&nbsp;applications for membership, given that&nbsp;<strong>Viktor Orb\u00e1n&#8217;s<\/strong>&nbsp;Hungary continues to stand in the way of the latter.<\/span>&nbsp;In the corridors of Brussels, the&nbsp;<strong>opening of the first cluster for Chisinau<\/strong> shortly is taken into consideration, before the elections, to allow Sandu\u2014who has made EU membership, considered &#8220;irreversible&#8221;, a central pillar of his political platform\u2014to <strong>take the lead&nbsp;in the polls<\/strong>.&nbsp;<span style=\"margin: 0px;padding: 0px\">However, this could be a politically risky&nbsp;<strong>move<\/strong>, potentially souring relations with Kyiv at a time when&nbsp;<strong>international diplomacy appears to be groping in the dark,<\/strong>&nbsp;with no end to the war with Russia&nbsp;<\/span>in sight.
