The mathematical confirmation came in the last few hours, during the <strong>consultations with political parties<\/strong> initiated by the transalpine premier to test the ground in view of the <strong>confidence vote<\/strong> he himself&nbsp;called for next week in an attempt to push through his <strong>controversial 2026 budget plan<\/strong>. Not only<strong> will the opposition parties<\/strong> refuse to support him, but also parts of his <strong>government coalition<\/strong>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The last hopes of French Prime Minister <strong>Fran\u00e7ois Bayrou<\/strong> to stay&nbsp;at the head of the government were dashed this afternoon (2 September). When, a few days ago, <strong>he <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/en\/2025\/08\/26\/french-pm-bayrou-calls-risky-confidence-vote-on-budget\/\">announced<\/a>&nbsp;he wanted to submit to a vote of confidence<\/strong> on 8 September, he was probably convinced he&nbsp;could pull a rabbit out of his hat and withstand <strong>the attacks from opposition parties.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;But the&nbsp;Palais Matignon occupant did not even have to reach the end of the <strong>round of consultations<\/strong> with the parliamentary forces (which will last until Thursday) to realise that his <strong>premier ministre experience will end there<\/strong>, not even nine months after <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/en\/2024\/12\/13\/macron-appoints-francois-bayrou-to-form-new-government\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">receiving the mandate<\/a>&nbsp;from President <strong>Emmanuel Macron<\/strong>. The prime minister pointed the finger at the <strong>national pension system<\/strong>, a 400 billion a year black hole on which he was <strong>unable to find common ground with the opposition<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0px\">The opposition parties &#8211; from the extreme right of the <em>Rassemblement National <\/em>(RN) to the radical left of <em>La France Insoumise<\/em> (LFI) via the <em>Parti Socialiste<\/em> (PS) &#8211; have announced that they&nbsp;<strong>will not support him <\/strong>next Monday. The mathematical certainty emerged after<strong> the National Rally (RN)<\/strong>, the largest parliamentary group with 123 of the 577 seats, rebuffed <strong>the head of government<\/strong>. Several left-wing parties did not even participate in the consultations.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0px\">After an hour of talks with Bayrou, the leader of the <em>Rassemblement<\/em> group in the House<strong>, <strong>Marine Le Pen<\/strong>, <\/strong>called for an<strong>&nbsp;&#8220;extremely rapid <strong>disbandment&#8221;<\/strong> of the Parliament<\/strong>. The leader of <em>Mouvement D\u00e9mocrate<\/em> (MoDem) will lack the support of some neo-Gaullist <em>R\u00e9publicains<\/em> (LR). There will be defections even in the <strong>Presidential platform <em>Renaissance<\/em><\/strong> &#8211; the electoral alliance that includes <em>La R\u00e9publique en Marche<\/em> (LREM), <em>Horizons,<\/em> and MoDem &#8211; as well as among the <strong>independents<\/strong> of the <em>Libert\u00e9s, Ind\u00e9pendants Outre-Mer et Territoires<\/em> (LIOT) group, which supports&nbsp;the minority executive.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0px\">There seems to be no peace for France, once&nbsp;renowned&nbsp;for its <strong>political-institutional stability<\/strong> (enshrined in the 1958 Constitution that gave birth to the <em>Cinqui\u00e8me R\u00e9publique<\/em>), but today shaken&nbsp;by the <strong>most profound crisis in decades<\/strong>. Since losing last year&#8217;s European elections and calling early elections, the occupant of the Elys\u00e9e Palace&nbsp;has seen <strong>three premiers burn out in one year<\/strong>. At the same time, his personal approval ratings have plummeted.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0px\">This time, Bayrou will not succeed in repeating<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/en\/2025\/01\/16\/french-pm-bayrou-survives-no-confidence-vote\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">January&#8217;s outcome<\/a>, when&nbsp;he <strong>survived a censure motion<\/strong> thanks to the votes of the ultra-right and socialists. Once the government falls, Macron will have three options. <strong>Appoint yet another prime minister<\/strong>, who is unlikely to receive the confidence of the hemicycle. Dissolve parliament, and <strong>call the French to the polls<\/strong>, risking finding an even more fragmented <em>Assembl\u00e9e<\/em> on his hands. Or <strong>resign<\/strong>.
