The <strong>Party of European Socialism (PSE)<\/strong>, which brings together the progressive and social-democratic forces of the Old Continent (including the Italian PD and PSI), will have to formalise the decision at the upcoming <strong>Congress in Amsterdam<\/strong> scheduled for 16-18 October.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The <strong>political decision is irreversible<\/strong> and has been maturing for quite some time now, thanks to Prime Minister <strong>Robert Fico<\/strong>&#8216;s constant blows to the foundations of <strong>liberal democracy<\/strong>. The national-populist leader, re-elected for a fourth term as head of the executive in 2023, is <strong>ruling in an increasingly authoritarian manner<\/strong>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/en\/2024\/09\/06\/after-hungary-and-bulgaria-anti-lgbtq-law-proposed-in-slovakia\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">compression of civil rights<\/a> and freedoms of expression, assembly, and peaceful protest\u2014which<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/en\/2024\/07\/24\/rule-of-law-eu-italy-slovakia-hungary\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">have resulted<\/a>&nbsp;in a gradual <strong>erosion of the rule of law<\/strong> in the central European country\u2014has been compounded in recent months by a political crisis that, on some occasions,&nbsp; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/en\/2025\/01\/28\/slovakia-pm-fico-wavers-as-political-crisis-deepens\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">seemed to be <\/a>about&nbsp;to <strong>paralyse Slovak democracy<\/strong>, with popular demonstrations heavily attended and the opposition on the warpath.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_350660\" style=\"width: 1024px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/000_34NG6RZ-scaled.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-350660 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/000_34NG6RZ-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"proteste Slovacchia\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/000_34NG6RZ-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/000_34NG6RZ-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/000_34NG6RZ-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/000_34NG6RZ-1536x1024.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/000_34NG6RZ-2048x1365.jpg 2048w, https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/000_34NG6RZ-750x500.jpg 750w, https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/000_34NG6RZ-1140x760.jpg 1140w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-350660\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Anti-government protests in Slovakia in April 2025 (photo: Tomas Benedikovic\/AFP)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0px\">\n<p>But what has increasingly embarrassed the socialist leadership has been Fico&#8217;s rash moves on foreign policy.&nbsp;On the one hand, there is the very close personal connection with <strong>Vladimir Putin<\/strong>: the strongman from Bratislava has already met the tsar three times in the past year, for example, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/en\/2024\/12\/23\/slovak-premier-fico-at-putins-court\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">before last Christmas<\/a> and at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/en\/2025\/05\/08\/all-of-putins-men-whos-attending-moscows-may-9-parade\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">ceremonies on Red Square<\/a> for the 80th anniversary of the victory over Nazi Germany.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0px\">Among other things, this proximity has had a direct bearing on relations with Ukraine. Fico&#8217;s Slovakia, like the Hungary of his fellow <strong>Viktor Orb\u00e1n<\/strong>, regularly puts itself<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/en\/2025\/07\/18\/slovakia-backs-down-eu-adopts-18th-sanctions-package-against-russia\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">sideways<\/a> whenever the Twenty-Seven have to impose <strong>new sanctions against the Kremlin<\/strong> (or renew existing ones), but also when it comes to supporting the <strong>Kyiv<\/strong> resistance.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0px\">Officially, the reasons have to do with Bratislava&#8217;s and Budapest&#8217;s <strong>dependence on Russian fossil fuels<\/strong>, especially oil and gas: the two governments claim that Ukraine&#8217;s actions <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/en\/2025\/08\/20\/the-clash-between-hungary-and-ukraine-over-russian-oil-continues\/\">jeopardise<\/a> their&nbsp;<strong>energy security<\/strong>. This is despite Brussels <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/en\/2025\/06\/17\/eu-will-ban-all-gas-and-oil-import-contracts-from-russia-by-the-end-of-2027\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">having long since asked<\/a> chancelleries to proceed swiftly to meet the ambitious goal of a&nbsp;<strong>complete phase-out from Moscow&#8217;s energy by 2027<\/strong>.\n<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-o-mail-quote-node=\"1\" data-o-mail-quote=\"1\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">I HAVE A SERIOUS MESSAGE FOR THE UKRAINIAN PRESIDENT<\/p>\n<p>Greetings from China, where evening has already fallen. In early September, the Slovak premier was in Beijing, the only EU member in the tribune of honour that celebrated the <strong>anniversary of the&nbsp;1945 victory<\/strong> in Tiananmen Square. There, as well as with the host, the prime minister also <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/en\/2025\/09\/02\/the-willing-meet-in-paris-to-define-security-guarantees-for-ukraine\/\">met again with Putin<\/a>, collecting his compliments for Bratislava&#8217;s &#8220;<strong>independent foreign policy<\/strong>.&#8221;&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0px\">Together with the other Slovak social democratic party <strong>HLAS-SD<\/strong>, SMER had already been <strong>suspended from the ESSP in October 2023<\/strong> as a result of the formation&nbsp;of the coalition government<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0px\">currently in power in Bratislava, which includes the ultra-nationalist <strong>right-wing SNS<\/strong>. Since then, MEPs from these parties no longer sit in the ranks of the Socialists in the EU Parliament (S&amp;D) but in the <strong>group of non-attached members&nbsp;<\/strong>(Ni).
