Metsola meets Zelensky in Kyiv"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Brussels &#8211; Shaken for the umpteenth time by <strong>Donald Trump<\/strong>, the EU is promising a new <strong>tightening<\/strong> <strong>on energy imports from Russia<\/strong> and trying to coordinate with its transatlantic ally to <strong>increase pressure on the Kremlin<\/strong> even further. At least in words, Washington and Brussels seem to have found <strong>some unity of purpose<\/strong> on the very sensitive dossier of the <strong>war in Ukraine<\/strong>. But from words it will be necessary to move on to deeds.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>According to <strong>Ursula von der Leyen<\/strong>, she and the tycoon reportedly had a &#8220;good call&#8221; last night (16 September), centred on &#8220;<strong>stepping up our joint efforts<\/strong> to increase economic pressure on Russia&#8221; through a new round of restrictive measures. The Commission &#8220;will soon present its <strong>19th sanctions package<\/strong>,&#8221; the EU executive chief assured, &#8220;targeting <strong>crypto<\/strong>, <strong>banks<\/strong>, and <strong>energy<\/strong>.&#8221;<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-o-mail-quote-node=\"1\" data-o-mail-quote=\"1\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">I had a good call with <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/POTUS?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">@POTUS<\/a> on strengthening our joint efforts to increase economic pressure on Russia through additional measures.<\/p>\n<p>The Commission will soon present its 19th package of sanctions, targeting crypto, banks, and energy.<\/p>\n<p>Russia\u2019s war economy, sustained by revenues\u2026<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; Ursula von der Leyen (@vonderleyen) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/vonderleyen\/status\/1968037310160629769?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">September 16, 2025<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0px\">\n<p>In particular, in the crosshairs of von der Leyen and Trump seem to have ended up the <strong>exports of gas and oil from the Federation<\/strong>, one of the main revenues with which <strong>Vladimir Putin<\/strong> finances his war. To this end, says the Berlaymont number one, &#8220;the Commission will propose to <strong>accelerate the phasing out of fossil fuel imports<\/strong>&#8221; from Moscow.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0px\">For the time being, more details are not available, but the meshes to be tightened are those of the regulation by which <strong>Brussels has set the end of 2027<\/strong> as the deadline for the <strong>complete<\/strong>&nbsp;<strong>phase-out <strong>of Russian energy products<\/strong>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/en\/2025\/06\/17\/eu-will-ban-all-gas-and-oil-import-contracts-from-russia-by-the-end-of-2027\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">adopted last June<\/a><\/strong>.&nbsp;After all, it was Trump who suggested yesterday that &#8220;<strong>Europe will have to stop buying oil from Russia<\/strong>.&#8221;&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0px\">The White House tenant also reprimanded his Ukrainian counterpart, <strong>Volodymyr Zelensky<\/strong>, again, claiming that he &#8220;<strong>will have to make a deal<\/strong>&#8221; with Putin if he wants to end the conflict. The two are expected to <strong>meet in person<\/strong> in the coming days, on the sidelines of the <strong>United Nations General Assembly<\/strong> underway in New York.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0px\">Be that as it may, the infamous&nbsp;<strong>19th package of EU sanctions<\/strong>\u2014which <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/en\/2025\/07\/18\/slovakia-backs-down-eu-adopts-18th-sanctions-package-against-russia\/\"><b>has been in the works since<\/b><\/a> the 18th was adopted last July\u2014trumpeted by von der Leyen herself a few days ago <strong><\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/en\/2025\/09\/10\/my-pitch-is-a-pitch-of-unity-in-her-state-of-the-union-address-von-der-leyen-once-again-asks-the-house-for-its-confidence\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">during her speech<\/a><strong><\/strong> about the state of the Union, <strong>has not yet materialised<\/strong>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0px\">At the Berlaymont, they are playing down the issue (no date was ever set for its presentation, so <strong>there is no delay<\/strong>, they argue), but the representatives of the Twenty-Seven should have discussed the proposal already today. The trip, on the occasion of 1300 days since the start of the full-scale Russian invasion, also served to mark the opening of a <strong>European Parliament delegation<\/strong> in the Ukrainian capital, housed in the<br \/>\n<strong><\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/en\/2025\/08\/28\/a-russian-attack-hit-the-eu-delegation-in-kyiv\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"_blank\">same building<strong>&nbsp;<\/strong>hosting <\/a>the EU delegation, which was damaged by a Russian bombing less than a month ago.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0px\">Addressing the deputies of the <strong>Verkhovna Rada<\/strong>, the single-chamber legislature in Kyiv, the Strasbourg Chamber&#8217;s number one stressed the need to <strong>continue to support resistance<\/strong> against aggression and the importance of arriving at a &#8220;<strong>just and lasting peace<\/strong>&#8221; (including the work of the <strong>coalition of the willing<\/strong> on<br \/>\n<strong><\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/en\/2025\/09\/04\/ukraine-security-guarantees-from-26-countries-yet-all-eyes-are-on-trump\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">security guarantees<\/a><strong><\/strong>), as well as the need to raise the pressure on Moscow.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0px\">The <strong>accession to the EU<\/strong> &#8220;is in itself a guarantee of security,&#8221; Metsola notes. The two member states, Trojan horses of the Tsar among the Twenty-Seven, are systematically blocking not only the start of negotiations to bring Kyiv into the twelve-star club but also the imposition of <strong><\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/en\/2025\/07\/16\/ukraine-slovakia-continues-to-block-sanctions-against-russia\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">sanctions against Russia<\/a><strong><\/strong> and the disbursement of<br \/>\n<strong><\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/en\/2025\/08\/29\/defence-ukraine-remains-priority-for-eu-but-hungary-blocks-aid\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">aid to Ukraine<\/a><strong><\/strong>. Budapest and Bratislava say they fear for their own <strong><\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/en\/2025\/08\/20\/the-clash-between-hungary-and-ukraine-over-russian-oil-continues\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">energy security<\/a><strong><\/strong>, as both are still dependent on Russian hydrocarbons.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0px\">But the reality is different. Slovak citizens are well aware of this, with tens of thousands taking to the streets in recent hours to protest against&nbsp;the <strong>marked shift of the government towards the Kremlin<\/strong>.&nbsp;This slide is evidenced, among other things, by an <b>increasingly suffocating crackdown on fundamental rights and freedoms<\/b> in the Central European country, which <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/en\/2025\/09\/16\/the-european-socialists-put-slovak-prime-minister-robert-ficos-party-at-the-door\/\"><b>finally cost<\/b><\/a> the authoritarian nationalist-populist prime minister his <b>permanent expulsion from the European Socialists<\/b>.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Trump and von der Leyen agree on a joint effort to hit Moscow&#8217;s energy exports.
