According to&nbsp;<span style=\"margin: 0px;padding: 0px\"><span style=\"margin: 0px;padding: 0px\"><a href=\"https:\/\/ec.europa.eu\/eurostat\/web\/products-eurostat-news\/w\/ddn-20250923-1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Eurostat&nbsp;<\/a>data, young Europeans leave the parental<\/span>&nbsp;nest only after turning&nbsp;<strong>26 years old<\/strong><\/span>. In the Union, however, it is not the same for everyone.&nbsp;<span style=\"margin: 0px;padding: 0px\">In the south of the continent, people&nbsp;<span style=\"margin: 0px;padding: 0px\">typically say goodbye to their parents later, around&nbsp;<strong>30 years of age,<\/strong>&nbsp;while in Scandinavia, one is considered &#8220;old&#8221; to be with them by<\/span>&nbsp;22.<\/span>&nbsp;And <strong>economic reasons weigh heavily<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"my-2 [&amp;+p]:mt-4 [&amp;_strong:has(+br)]:inline-block [&amp;_strong:has(+br)]:pb-2 animate-in fade-in-25 duration-700\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/Mappa.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"img-fluid\" data-file-name=\"image.png\" src=\"\/web\/image\/114-935adc06\/image.png?access_token=fd95f4cd-bb1d-40b2-aa99-92132a8638d0\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0px\">In the two largest countries of the Union, Germany and France,&nbsp;young people leave home at the age of 23. Quite different figures for the third most populous country, Italy, which ranks almost last in this category. <strong>Italians leave the family home at 30.1 years<\/strong>. Similar fate for Portugal (28.9), Spain (30), Greece (30.7) and Slovakia (30.9). However, Croatians are the most mama&#8217;s boys, with an average age of 31.3 years.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p class=\"my-2 [&amp;+p]:mt-4 [&amp;_strong:has(+br)]:inline-block [&amp;_strong:has(+br)]:pb-2 animate-in fade-in-25 duration-700\">The choice is certainly not only up to the will of&nbsp;<span style=\"margin: 0px;padding: 0px\">young people: there are<strong>&nbsp;economic and social<\/strong>&nbsp;factors&nbsp;<\/span>that slow down the path to independence.<\/p>\n<p class=\"my-2 [&amp;+p]:mt-4 [&amp;_strong:has(+br)]:inline-block [&amp;_strong:has(+br)]:pb-2 animate-in fade-in-25 duration-700\"><span style=\"text-align: inherit\">Running away from their families as soon as possible is ranked first by Finnish youngsters, at&nbsp;<\/span><strong style=\"text-align: inherit\">21.4 years,<\/strong><span style=\"text-align: inherit\">&nbsp;followed by similar averages in all Scandinavian countries, including Denmark.<\/span>&nbsp;There are many reasons for this, one of the main ones being&nbsp;<strong>to attend&nbsp;university.<\/strong> The high wealth of the inhabitants (the highest GDP per capita in the EU) and the free universities make a dormitory or rented house affordable for almost all families.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-o-mail-quote-node=\"1\" data-o-mail-quote=\"1\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">Cost of public college tuition:<br \/>\nSweden: $0<br \/>\nNorway: $0<br \/>\nFinland: $0<br \/>\nDenmark: $0<br \/>\nUnited States: $9,596<\/p>\n<p>When Republicans say it&#8217;s OK to give billions in tax breaks to the top 1%, don&#8217;t tell me we can&#8217;t afford to make public college available for free. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/7wEh2MPSG6\">pic.twitter.com\/7wEh2MPSG6<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&#8211; Sen. Bernie Sanders (@SenSanders)&nbsp;<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/SenSanders\/status\/1958586828032024623?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">August 21, 2025<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p class=\"my-2 [&amp;+p]:mt-4 [&amp;_strong:has(+br)]:inline-block [&amp;_strong:has(+br)]:pb-2 animate-in fade-in-25 duration-700\">Italians and Spaniards would probably like to do the same, but conditions are different for them.&nbsp;<span style=\"margin: 0px;padding: 0px\">Italy has&nbsp;<strong>a youth unemployment rate<\/strong>&nbsp;of around&nbsp;<strong>19 per cent<\/strong>, while Spain fares even worse at&nbsp;<strong>23.5 per cent<\/strong>.<\/span>&nbsp;Both are higher than the Union average at <strong>14.4 per cent<\/strong>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p class=\"my-2 [&amp;+p]:mt-4 [&amp;_strong:has(+br)]:inline-block [&amp;_strong:has(+br)]:pb-2 animate-in fade-in-25 duration-700\">In a situation of job uncertainty, it remains challenging to afford housing away from one&#8217;s loved ones, especially when considering the cost of university or the case of <strong>temporary contracts.<\/strong> In Italy, about 30 per cent of employees in the 15-34 bracket have a temporary contract. A figure that pins that segment of the population at home, unable to obtain a mortgage.<\/p>\n<p class=\"my-2 [&amp;+p]:mt-4 [&amp;_strong:has(+br)]:inline-block [&amp;_strong:has(+br)]:pb-2 animate-in fade-in-25 duration-700\">The last problem is the cost of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/en\/2025\/09\/09\/tinagli-eu-working-on-housing-crisis-but-salvini-doesnt-want-to-meet-us\/\">rent<\/a>. This cost item has a significant impact on young people&#8217;s wallets.&nbsp;<span style=\"text-align: inherit\">According to data from&nbsp;<\/span><em>Idealista<\/em>,&nbsp;<span style=\"text-align: inherit\"><\/span><strong style=\"text-align: inherit\">the cost of rent<\/strong><span style=\"text-align: inherit\">&nbsp;in Italy has risen by 10.6 per cent over the previous year, compared with an&nbsp;<\/span><strong style=\"text-align: inherit\">increase in nominal wages of only 3.5 per cent.<\/strong><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Eurostat data show that Scandinavian countries are the ones where young people leave the earliest.
