In a heavily guarded Danish capital&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/en\/2025\/09\/30\/copenhagen-on-high-alert-for-the-double-european-summit-six-countries-send-personnel-and-equipment-to-protect-leaders-from-drones\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">for fear of attacks<\/a>&nbsp;by Russian drones from the sky, the <strong>European Political Community (EPC)<\/strong>, the assembly of leaders from the Old Continent &#8211; excluding Russia and Belarus &#8211; who gather every six months to discuss the most pressing common challenges, met today (October 2) for the seventh time.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>As in the previous session (the last one, held in Tirana <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/en\/2025\/05\/16\/european-leaders-convene-in-tirana-but-think-of-istanbul\/\">in May<\/a>),&nbsp;the table of heads of state and government from the <strong>47 participating countries<\/strong> &#8211; all members of the EU, plus some 20 other European nations &#8211; featured two crucial, inextricably linked topics.&nbsp;The <strong>support for the aggrieved Ukraine<\/strong> on the one hand and, on the other, the <strong>defense and security of the Old Continent<\/strong>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The host, Danish Prime Minister <strong>Mette Frederiksen<\/strong>, opened the proceedings by defining the &#8220;important task&#8221; to which, she says, the chancelleries are being called upon to face: &#8216;We must make our common Europe so strong that a war against us becomes unthinkable, and we must do it now,&#8221; she stressed, flanked by the President of the European Council, <strong>Ant\u00f3nio Costa<\/strong>, and Ukrainian leader <strong>Volodymyr Zelensky<\/strong>.\n<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-o-mail-quote-node=\"1\" data-o-mail-quote=\"1\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">The <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/EPC?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">#EPC<\/a> is the demonstration of a shared political will.<\/p>\n<p>Those who are in the European Union, those who are not, those who wish to join, and even those who have left &#8211; together, we form Europe.<\/p>\n<p>And together, we want to work for peace, development, and the prosperity of our\u2026 <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/5O1Dzd3rs3\">pic.twitter.com\/5O1Dzd3rs3<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&#8211; Ant\u00f3nio Costa (@eucopresident)&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/eucopresident\/status\/1973791270230175882?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">October 2, 2025<\/a> <\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0px\">\n<p>Frederiksen urged even countries more distant from the Federation &#8211; such as&nbsp;<strong>Giorgia Meloni<\/strong>&#8216;s Italy, which <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/en\/2025\/10\/01\/security-meloni-to-eu-leaders-there-is-also-a-southern-flank\/\">expressed&nbsp;skepticism<\/a>&nbsp; on the &#8216;<strong>drone wall<\/strong>&#8216; initiative <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/en\/2025\/09\/26\/the-unions-future-lies-in-the-drone-wall-but-the-timeframe-is-unclear-in-a-year-or-who-knows\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">that EU leaders proposed<\/a> to protect its eastern borders &#8211; to seriously consider the <strong>existential threat posed by Moscow<\/strong>, made clear&nbsp;by the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/en\/2025\/09\/23\/drones-breach-copenhagen-and-oslo-airports-eu-russia-is-testing-our-borders\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">increasing number of violations<\/a> of <strong>European airspace<\/strong> in recent weeks. &#8220;<strong>Russia is testing us more than ever<\/strong>,&#8221; she reiterated, listing&nbsp;the &#8220;<strong>hybrid attacks<\/strong>&#8221; conducted by the Kremlin, including through the instrumentalization of migrants and election interference campaigns.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0px\">She added that the war unleashed by <strong>Vladimir Putin<\/strong>&nbsp;&#8220;has never been about Ukraine alone, it is about Europe.&#8221; And &#8220;<strong>we have to move much faster<\/strong>,&#8221; she argues, to build &#8220;an <strong>incredible defense industry<\/strong> in just a couple of years&#8221; following the example of Kyiv. &#8220;Every euro, dollar, or Danish krone we send to Ukraine is a <strong>direct investment in European security<\/strong>,&#8221; she reasons. However, he adds, &#8220;<strong>it is our war and if Ukraine loses, it means we have failed.<\/strong>&#8221; More optimistic is the occupant of the \u00c9lys\u00e9e Palace, who claims the &#8220;rapprochement with the United States&#8221; as a success of the <strong>Coalition of the Willing,<\/strong> explicitly created to provide Kyiv with the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/en\/2025\/09\/04\/ukraine-security-guarantees-from-26-countries-yet-all-eyes-are-on-trump\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">security guarantees<\/a> needed to maintain post-war stability.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0px\">From the EPC podium, Zelensky called for European allies to provide<strong>&nbsp;<strong>new military aid<\/strong> <\/strong>and urged the leaders of the Twelve-Star Club to expedite<strong> the <strong>19th sanctions package<\/strong> <\/strong> (currently<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/en\/2025\/09\/19\/19th-eu-sanctions-package-against-russia-ready-von-der-leyen-threats-are-rising-lets-increase-the-pressure\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">being discussed<\/a>&nbsp;by the Twenty-Seven member states) and to&nbsp;<strong>open accession negotiations<\/strong> with Ukraine and Moldova. He also congratulated President <strong>Maia Sandu<\/strong> after her party&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/en\/2025\/09\/29\/moldova-still-chooses-the-eu-president-sandus-pas-wins-absolute-majority\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">recent victory<\/a> in elections.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0px\">The Ukrainian president echoed&nbsp;<strong>Donald Trump<\/strong>&#8216;s call to stop buying Russian oil, lashing out at <strong>Viktor Orb\u00e1n&#8217;s<\/strong> Hungary in particular. Together with his Belgian counterpart<strong> Bart De Wever,<\/strong> he led the opposition to the idea\u2014supported by, among others, German Chancellor <strong>Friedrich Merz <\/strong>and described by Orb\u00e1n as \u201cnot very promising\u201d\u2014of using fr<strong>ozen Russian assets as collateral for reconstruction spending <\/strong>in support of Ukraine.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0px\">Other topics addressed by leaders today included <strong>economic security<\/strong>, <strong>competitiveness,<\/strong> and managing <strong>migration flows<\/strong>. On the practical side, as has long been evident, the EPC represents little more than a platform, a catwalk for leaders to <strong>discuss the most pressing common challenges<\/strong>. Lots of talk &#8211; not even too much, really, given the absence of one of the hottest topics of the day, namely the <strong>genocide perpetrated by Israel<\/strong> (as<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/en\/2025\/09\/16\/israel-enters-gaza-city-for-un-it-is-genocide-eu-first-economic-sanctions-tomorrow\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">certified by the UN<\/a>)&nbsp;<strong>against the Palestinian people<\/strong> &#8211; and minimal&nbsp;concrete action.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The seventh EPC meeting once again closes with a commitment to defend both Ukraine and the rest of the continent.
